Castaway Cottage

Picture a place where fresh seafood abounds. . . where you can step out the back door, enjoy the salty scent of sea, and pick fresh vegetables and flowers right from your own private garden overlooking the water.

As you dine on this delicious fare, you will see unforgettable sunsets while savoring some of the freshest food on earth - harvested that very day.

Imagine all this in the comfort of a cozy, romantic cottage where simple pleasures make time stand still.

Simple pleasures like sitting on a new sofa, fresh coffee in hand, watching the morning tide come and go through the panoramic windows overlooking the harbor.

Or a stroll down the shore road to see clam diggers out on the mud flats harvesting the clams you will eat later that day.

Or a walk on the beach where the only sign of another person is the sea art left behind in the sand.

Imagine having a lunch with you – crab meat sandwiches would be nice, and stopping along the beach to gaze out at the islands and ocean while sampling its fruits.

A trip to the wharf to pick up the clams and to watch the lobster boats come in with their haul. Picture trying to choose between steamers and lobsters and deciding to have both!

Back at Castaway Cottage the lobster pot awaits as well as all the accoutrements needed. Now that dinner is planned imagine cozying up in the lighthouse room for some afternoon reading. There's room for two on the built-in bench bed.

Amazing how the sea air causes sleepiness - and enhances the appetite. Thank goodness for the clams AND lobster!

Visualize heading out to the garden in the late afternoon sunshine, after a good rest, to select vegetables and flowers for tonight's table. Can you see a bottle of Seaglass Sauvignon Blanc with this meal?

After sunset imagine lighting the pellet stove with push button ease, making up a tray of tea and dark chocolate laced with blueberries, cranberries and almonds and settling in to watch a favorite show on PBS.

Picture yourself ascending the stairs and nestling into new beds with new quilts – washed and scented with the same fresh air you have enjoyed all day.

The only thing you are likely to hear, apart from the light sound of waves lapping on the shore, will be the early morning bahing of some sheep at a farmhouse two hundred yards away, or the light rumbling of the lobster fishermen headed for the wharf to catch your next dinner of lobster.

A stay at Castaway brings rest, relaxation and comfort. Just read the reviews. We even have a housekeeper who keeps the place spotless. Her name is Mrs. Hughes.

This charming ocean side cottage overlooking Eastern Harbor has clear water views and easy access to the water's edge for boat launching or beach combing via a 60 yard shore road.

Located in an isolated fishing village, the cottage is only ninety minutes northeast of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park and thirty minutes southwest of Machias.

The cottage has delightful gardens stocked with shasta daisies, rose campions and pansies (to name a few). There is garden furniture on the lawn overlooking the flowerbeds and the ocean.

Equipped with all modern conveniences (oil central heating, washer, dryer, flat screen TV, microwave, coffee maker and blender) the cottage is very comfortable. It It sleeps from two to five.

Sleeping Arrangements: There is a master bedroom upstairs with two twin beds which are pushed together for greater coziness, there's a built-in bed in the lighthouse room downstairs, as well as new sofa bed in the sitting room.

About Alan and Brenda Jepson

Alan and I are film makers for Maine PBS. I just love South Addison and have been coming here since I was 9 months old to spend summers with my grandparents. In 1986 we bought this wonderful cottage - a true romantic getaway and we have been renting it out ever since.

Alan and Brenda Jepson purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Alan and Brenda Jepson chose Downeast and Acadia

Mooseneck, as the area is known, is really magical. The sea air sharpens the appetite and at the same time has a relaxing effect. Folks tell us they sleep so well here. We have added a lot to the cottage over the years - original paintings done by local listed artists and quilts made by local crafts people. The house is light and airy. The views are stunning. It is a great place to rest and relax. We are happy to share it with others so they have the same happy experience here that I have had for nearly sixty years!

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage is very charming and even quaint. It feels like taking a trip into an enchanted place as soon as you walk through the door. I stayed here as a child and so it has many special memories for me. We have included features like a delightful flower garden overlooking the water, as well as organic vegetable garden to enhance the dining experience. Imagine fresh lobster, Maine potatoes, freshly picked vegetables of your choice from a garden with ocean views, and fresh blueberry pie for dessert. These are just some of the things that give our visitors special memories of this cottage. Downeast Maine is such a beautiful place. We provide visitors in advance with a copy of our DVD we made for Maine PBS about the Downeast area (there is a clip on this site) and we give our guests a Downeast Calendar we make each year. It reminds them of the wonderful vacation they had at our cottage since many of the photos are from this location. We hope you have a chance to enjoy it too!

Guestbook comments from the manager

We loved our visit in your delightful home! What an amazing place to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday. The view is beautiful - even through the fog! Your garden was a great location for breakfast. The house is comfortable, and it was so nice to come in and see the exquisite beach roses on the bureau and table. Thank you! We hope to come back to rest, play, read and laugh in your home on the sea in beautiful South Addison.

A Gem in Downeast Maine

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is absolutely beautiful and the view amazing. It was the little things that made our stay pleasurable--sunsets and sunrises, the sea air, and the vegetable garden.

Perfect Down East Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cozy, comfortable seaside cottage is a fabulous getaway location for two. It is well equipped, spotlessly clean, and delightfully decorated. Overall the cottage has a modestly rustic character which only enhances the enjoyment of this Down East experience. My wife and I spent the month of June and found the home and surrounding area to be a pure delight. The views across the water are fabulous, the daily changes in the tide are a joy to experience, and the stars at night are unbelievable. All of this is wonderfully matched by Brenda and Alan's lovely hospitality. Highly recommended. Stay here if you have the chance!

A comfy cottage in a great location for views and walking

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was immaculate, nicely appointed and well equipped. There were just the two of us and it was perfect for our needs. Due to the low, slanted ceilings in the upstairs bedroom, it's a little tricky (easy to hit your head) when you start down the stairs but one of us managed not to bump their head. The view out the living/dining room windows is beautiful--bald eagle(s) sitting at the tops of spruce trees just about every morning and sometimes later in the day too, great blue heron wading in the shallows at low tide, gorgeous sunsets. The view was too good to pass up by going out to dinner so we cooked and ate in so we wouldn't miss a single sunset. The garden was still producing some great veggies and pretty flowers the first week of October--an extra bonus! We loved the fact that we could walk out the front door and quickly access some beautiful walks through moss-covered forest out to both sandy and pebbly beaches with views to the east. The walks to Burnie's Beach on Cape Split and the Woodward Preserve on Ripley Neck are wonderful too. One reason we picked this cottage is that it's not too far from Great Wass Island off Jonesport or from Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge in Steuben but we were so pleased with the Ingersoll Preserve and the other places suggested by Brenda and Alan that we almost didn't have time to get to Great Wass or Petit Manan. Pigeon Hill on the road out to Petit Manan is a short hike but what a view of Cadillac Mountain and the whole area from Jonesport to Acadia Nat'l. Park! Enjoyed watching the sheep graze at the property down the road and watching the crows come around cawing every morning, sitting on the various posts in the neighborhood, preening. Tall aspens on either side of the west-facing windows attracted a variety of song birds (we're birders). It's a very relaxing place, not much traffic (at least not in early October) other than the lobstermen arriving in the morning to go out and check their pots. We would definitely return.

Peaceful and Cozy

  • 5 of 5

The Jepsons have a special little place and we were so lucky they shared it with us! The views are magnificent! The house itself is literally equipped with anything and everything you could possibly need. Not only do they have a beautiful flower and vegetable garden, but the neighbor even stopped by with some goodies from his garden. Down the road (within walking distance) there is fresh lobster, you can watch them bring them in! It is hard to not want to utilize this special feature daily! It turned out we didn't have cell service when we got there (we have sprint), but the wifi in the cottage works really well. The views from the cottage are spectacular, it was neat to watch the tide go in and out and catch the locals out clamming in the mud during low tide. Stop at the grocery store on your way in and you will have no reason to leave for the week (except to hop down the road for some seafood). It is quaint, private, clean and well equipped! We didn't eat out while we were there, we came to Addison to relax and be stationary for a week! We did however, check out some local beaches, but really there is no need to do that! There is beach access right next to the house, with views of the lobster trap! We had a splendid time and hope to go back one day. It really is a little hidden gem, I am so glad We stumbled upon it!

A calm, relaxing experience

  • 5 of 5

We loved our visit. The locations is great, the cottage is perfect, and the lobsters are delicious. The hiking around the area is great, and there are many interesting places near by, including Acadia National Park and many others. The scenery in the area is beautiful, and even the view from the house is great. We didn't need to rush anywhere, and had a great time even just sitting in the big room in the back. All in all, we had an amazing time.

Absolute bliss....

  • 5 of 5

This pristine cottage was the ideal place to relax and enjoy the view- sitting outside with our pups each day, walks close to the cottage (with the maps provided) and reading several good books! Quiet and peaceful area, with very friendly neighbors. Somewhat of an "out of the way" location, yet a close drive to the market and restaurants. We particularly enjoyed dinner at 44 Degrees North and The Navigator and the blueberry pancakes at the Millbridge House Restaurant are not to be missed!

If you are looking for a low key, relaxing vacation in a stunning oceanfront location; you have found it in South Addison at this little gem.
