Off the Grid Gloriously Relaxing Vistas Galore

  • 5 of 5

Loved our 5 day stay at the Big Sur Mountain Retreat. Peggy and Richard were very accommodating and helpful. We explored much of the roads and trails in the Southern Big Sur area from this location. Enjoyed soothing our muscles after hiking in the bath house's claw foot tub with 180 degree of the ocean. Cooked most of our meals at the cabin but enjoyed one meal out just down the road at Treebones.

Gem in southern Big Sur

  • 5 of 5

This place is beyond stunning. Just off highway 1, it offers a magnificent view of the and coastline ocean in a secluded garden area. Immediately behind the cabin is a river/waterfall offering an amazing auditory supplement to the experience.

The cabin and bath houses are both perfect. Be prepared for the best shower or bath of your life, as you will be looking straight into the beautiful Pacific Ocean during it.

The grounds offer a beautiful garden, and two friendly horses. There is an outdoor seating perch with ocean views that we enjoyed for hours.

Peggy was a wonderful host, and was very helpful in orienting us to the area.

Words and pictures cannot do this place justice. Check it out for yourself, you will not be disappointed!

I loved everything about this cabin. The stream, bathhouse, horses and the fire make it super special. It's pretty close to everything. Definitely hike pfeiffer state park eswolden trail - go up the right side! Hope to come back. Thank you!

Absolutely The Best Stay EVER!

  • 5 of 5

Peggy was so sweet and easy to communicate with. The cabin is so perfect for a romantic getaway. It's private, charming, clean, and just awesome! The view of the ocean is spectacular too! Absolutely a perfect experience with the property and the owner, except for the rain, which wasn't her fault :)

A cozy, mountain Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This little cabin is truly nestled in the woods. It's placement on a slope with a wrap around deck means that as you look out of the full wall windows that surround you, you see redwoods on two sides and a peek-a-boo view of the ocean on the other. As you can see in the pics, the bathhouse is a separate room all it's own. Words really can't do it this place justice. The clawfoot tub with an ocean view is just sensational!. My husband and I have such a romantic time there. For hikers, there is a trail just steps from the cabin that links up to the Cruikshank (sp?) trail. We were there in mid December and the trail was not overgrown in the least. Poison oak is there, but not on the trail itself, so no problem!

A little bonus of this property is that you get to visit with the horses that live there! An adjacent corral means that while you are sipping your wine at the bench outside admiring the ocean view, you have 2 horse friends to join the party (there are two friendly cats that wander the property too) !

The owners Peggy and Richard, have owned this property for quite awhile and could not be nicer or more welcoming. Everything was clearly explained and the perfect size for two. As an artist, I could not help imagining how perfect this place would be for a writer who wants some alone time away from the city.

We are SO grateful that Peggy and Richard are willing to share this little paradise! We WILL be back!

Thanks again, Peggy and Richard!

Happy New Year!

Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 4 days here prior to Thanksgiving and had an amazing time. The setting for the property is simply stunning - amazing view of the ocean from the bathhouse, and the outdoor chairs in front of the horse paddock steps from the bathhouse and cabin entrance. The cabin itself is only one-room and quite tiny, but really all you need for two people. Everything was very clean and tidy when we arrived. As a horse lover I loved the two horses literally outside of your door as well as the outdoor cats. The horses are a little cranky, clearly they don't realize how good they have it, but beautiful to watch nevertheless. The kitchen set up is very minimalist, but also all you need. Very few dishes and glasses, but this is likely by design to avoid clutter since the space is so small. Definitely pack in food since the nearest grocery store is quite far. Gorda itself is cute, but outrageous prices on everything from gas to wine and snacks. There is a 2 burner gas stove as well as a wood burning fire and outdoor grill. There is also a mini-fridge and cooler. You are truly off the grid here with everything run by solar. Quite nice to unplug. Remember to bring your slippers as it does get cold in the cabin during the morning. There are also hiking trails immediately outside the cabin that you don't have to drive to access, which is really nice. We drove up to the Esalen Institute for massages which were quite pricey, but literally the best massages we have ever had. The hot springs there are also lovely. They are labeled as "clothing optional", but we were the only squares in swimsuits as a heads up if you go there. Saw some things that will take a while to get over, but Big Sur is the land of the hippies so what can you expect. Speaking of nudity, the cabin itself as well as the bathhouse do not have any window treatments or blinds, so at first that can be a little unnerving about how "exposed" you are, but we quickly got over that. Quite liberating actually. The cabin is so beautiful and peaceful. We could hear a dog parking in the mornings there, that would be the only (minor) complaint. As dog lovers we didn't care. We highly recommend staying here!
