Overview

Port Haywood Cottage Rental Photos and Description

- 3 bedrooms and one and one-half baths plus outdoor shower. SLEEPS 4 (2A/2C).

Want to get away from it all? Forget the daily grind by visiting Reflections, our attractive Chesapeake Bay beach cottage. Wake up to gorgeous sunrises and unlimited views. Walk the private beach to New Point Lighthouse, the second oldest lighthouse on the Bay. Spectacular sunsets are just a short walk to the Nature Conservatory's overlook on Mobjack Bay. Your backyard is a beach of sugar-white sand. The water is shallow and warm without dangerous waves, undertows and currents. You and your children will love it. How special is it? In February 2014 The HuffPost Travel Journal reported voters across the nation selected Mathews '1 of 15 of America's Coolest Small Towns'!

Reflections' Great room and master bedroom overlook the many moods of the Chesapeake. One bedroom is especially appealing to children - its beds are World War II Liberty ship bunks. Marine artifacts accent the room. The third bedroom features a wicker trundle bed and furniture - sure to suit any young girl's fancy. Reflections is tastefully decorated and so comfortable and relaxing you won't want to leave - ever.

What is it that makes Reflections so unique? You will know the minute you walk into the Great Room. The walls and decorations combine to make an interesting and one of a kind collection of marine art and antiques collected over many years of living and sailing on the Bay. Enjoy original water colors, stained glass and art which highlight the many moods of the Bay. If you're into artifacts you'll enjoy sleeping in the original officers bunk beds taken from a World War II Liberty Ship - a survivor of the German U boat Atlantic campaign. Directional signs from the deck of the famous liner S.S. United States can be seen on the walls of the Great Room along with survival rations and a life jacket from one of its lifeboats. All of this integrated into its beautiful setting on the Bay help make your stay at Reflections truly unique. Still unsure? View the video of Reflections taken by one of our guests, Pulitzer Prize winner and White House Photographer, Ron Edmonds.

Home away from Home!

  • 5 of 5

Please note: This review is really for May of 2014 as I could not select that far back on calendar for the review since it's been a while. We wrote a review directly back to owners when we came back from vacation but forgot to write it here. We had such a great time we just wanted everyone to know. Here is the review we wrote to Michael and Barbara.

My wife, daughter and I had a blast! After the weekend, we had the ENTIRE beach to ourselves. We ventured into Norfolk and went to the Zoo and bontantical gardens (A+ in my book), toured Yorktown and Williamsburgh. Local diners and restraunts were excellent and everyone in Mathews and Port Haywood were friendly, kind and helpful. And with all this we still had a ton of time for the beach and R & R. We met some of your lovely neighbors who let us borrow their Kyacks for the week (we only used them once since we were busy doing other things). Ella (our daughter, 6 yrs old) had so much fun on the beach. She actually recruited me to help rescue some horsehoe crabs that were turned upside down on the beach. My daughter loved your wicker desk so much we ended up purchasing a small childs desk from an antique store in Glouscter. It definetly was a little tight getting the desk into a Toyota Rav4 but she loves it and it is a memory of

our VA vacation and she will always have that. I could go on and on. We thank you and your family for sharing your beach home and also for being so easy to work with. You and your family are fortunate to have such a gem of a place and can only imagine the memories that were built in it. I have already recommended the area and place to others and hope we can make it back there soon.

Simply PERFECT!!!

  • 5 of 5

"Two words describe our stay at Reflections....PERFECT GETAWAY! This was our second trip back to reflections and it was even better than our first stay. This property is located right on the beach and the view from the front of the house is breath taking. The sand is super soft and the cottage is quaint, clean and makes you feel as if you have been there many times before. We walked the beach down to the light house and enjoyed sitting out on the sand and taking in the wildlife....gulls, heron, pelicans and even a school of dolphins entertained us! My 8 year old daughter did not want to leave and we are already planning when we can get back again. This house is also situated only 10 minutes from the town of Mathews, which is the neatest little town and the people, restaurants, bakery, stores, are all way cool in their own way! Reflections is a must visit if you are looking for a quiet getaway and simply a fantastic time!!!!

Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week at Reflections in August and loved every minute! Reflections is quiet, comfortable and relaxing. We spent most days enjoying the sandy beach and water right outside our front door. The inside is comfortable and perfect for a family, but wasn't too big for two. The small town of Mathews is 15 minutes away and offers a few restaurants, all of which were good. We booked a kayaking trip out to the lighthouse, through Bay Country Kayaking with Shannon, which was fun and educational. We had dolphins swimming 15 feet from our kayaks, which was an unexpected treat; we also saw the dolphins everyday from our deck. The Brownley's, owners of the home, were very nice to work with. They responded quickly to all questins, generally within the hour. The Brownley's genuinely want your stay to be pleasant and for you to enjoy their lovely home away from home, which we certainly did!

Fantastic Getaway for the Family

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful! The owners are fantastic, take excellent care of the property, and are extremely pleasant to work with. We were late in booking, and they worked with us to prorate our stay so we could take advantage of the long weekend. The location of the cottage is very peaceful, off the beaten path, and is very picturesque. We loved the woodland feel of the front yard as we drove in. The decor is very cool, very nautical, and they have gone to great lengths to make you feel like you are at the beach. The boys loved the real ship bunks, and the room they slept in had all sorts of great nick knacks, like the life jacket from the SS United States, a fantastic map hanging on the wall, an ammo crate, and lots of books about the water!

We had everything we needed, to include plenty of inside and outside space. The cottage is extremely well equipped. Our mornings began with the sunrise on the deck, and at low tide we walked along the shore to the point to see the lighthouse. The water is very shallow along the point and we were able to walk out on the sand bar quite a distance. Along the way we saw a tree with six bald eagles, osprey were striking the water, and there was an abundance of other water fowl in the preserve. The trip to the lighthouse was the highlight of the trip for our family.

The beach is not crowded, and we found that most of the folks we spoke with were the owners. They told us great stories about the area, and were super friendly. Our boys enjoyed talking to the fishermen, looking at what was caught, inquiring about the crab traps being set, and collecting shells and horseshoe crabs that washed up. The water was perfect for body boards, and the scenery was very therapeutic!

Thank you so much for allowing us to treat ourselves to your cottage. We are already talking about our return trip! Don't pass this up if you want to get away and relax!

Breathtaking view

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean and cute! It has the best view for sunrises and sunsets which were gorgeous! They had nets and a crab cage, and we were able to catch 28 crabs :) It is a very quiet and private beach and the waves are truly gentle. We were able to walk about 500 feet out and the water only came up to our thighs when it was low tide. We saw wonderful creatures such as porpoises, eagles, sting rays, horseshoe crabs, hermit crab, crabs, herons, and many other beautiful animals. You can walk along the shore to get a closer look at the New Point Lighthouse as well. We can't wait to go back! The Brownley helped make it a special vacation!

Ideally situated on Chesapeake Bay, sun, sand and water sports await you. If you tire of swimming, hiking and browning to a golden tan, try your hand at fishing, clamming or crabbing within sight of your own private deck. Kayakers love the many water trails and the chance to paddle with porpoise. If you love nature, you will enjoy the visits from many different migratory waterfowl including herons, osprey, pelicans and occasionally, eagles. The nearby town of Mathews is a quaint 19th century community with old homes and interesting shops. Trips to Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown allow you to walk the streets of our forefathers and are easy commutes. Busch Gardens, Water Country, Virginia Beach and many fine golf courses are easily accessible. Centrally located between Virginia Beach, Richmond and Washington, Reflections is the ideal vacation site.
