About Mandy Cornwell
I have lived in Spain for over 15 years. My family are all grown up and live in the UK. I am from Hertfordshire originally and also lived in Norfolk for 7 years. I have had a varied work career, being a PA to Managers and Director at BAe in the microelectronics department, worked in pharmaceuticals in the Export Department with Smith Kline and French, special needs childminder (when my three children were small), worked as an assistant to a chartered surveyor and estate agent.... having worked in a service industry background I have more of an awareness of what people want and expect from a good quality holiday rental villa.
Mandy Cornwell purchased this Villa in 2002
Why Mandy Cornwell chose Chiclana de la Frontera
I love this area, very Spanish and quieter than the Costa del Sol. There is a lot to see and do and everyday is different. The food and climate are wonderful. We are in a very central location for visits to Jerez, Vejer, Cadiz, Puerto Santa Maria, Medina Sidonia, Canos de Meca, Conil, Tarifa, Gibraltar. We are in a small village but only 5 minutes from Chiclana town with its markets, cafes and town squares with many churches to explore.
What makes this Villa unique
The villa's location in a quiet residential street, within walking distance to bars and restaurants, all on tarmac roads, unlike many other villas in the area which are situated a long way down unmade roads. The large kitchen and open plan, bright airy lounge, air conditioning to the lounge and bedrooms for Summer and log fire for supplementary heating in the colder months make staying in the luxury well-equipped villa a pleasant home from home experience. Beach is only 12-15 minutes drive away with ample parking and loads of facilities. Owner on hand to provide help where necessary, hospital/clinic trips, help with translations and where to go and what to do!
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date. 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
We had a lovely time as a family of five. Three children ages. 11,13 and 15.
We flew in to Jerez and the villa is a relatively short drive just over 30 mins. We called Mandy when we were about 10 mins away and she gave us clear directions to the villa and met us there. The villa was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with useful equipment. It was great to have use of pool towels, saves on the baggage allowance. With teenage children it’s a necessity to have good Wi-fi. The Wi-fi in the villa was really good. The pool was amazing, kids loved the diving board and the various pool toys supplied.
There is a restaurant 2 mins walk from the villa, which serves lovely food.
We had a lovely mix of visiting the nearby beaches and towns with lazy days by the pool and BBQ in the evenings.
We loved Jerez and Cadiz. Cádiz is an amazing town and a visit to the fish market is a must, even if you don’t buy.
We particularly loved Peurto Santa de Maria - very clean, with lots of showers and toilets. The beach chairs and buckets and spades were a huge hit.
We also visited Barrosa beach and had an evening there.
In short an amazing holiday and the villa makes a good base for exploring costa de la Luz. Or having wonderful Lazy days.
Thank you Mandy.
I am pleased that my villa met all your expectations. It was a pleasure having your family stay. I am glad that you enjoyed your holiday in the Costa de la Luz and all it has to offer.
Comfortable,cosy and a great pool.
We had a very relaxing break and the pool was fantastic. The local couple of restaurants are very good but you do need a car if you want to travel further afield. We wold definitely book again.
Thank you for your kind review. Yes a car is needed to explore all this area has to offer. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay.
Great pool and pool area. House clean and kitchen very well equipped. Mandy the host very helpful.
The villa was very quiet and peaceful. Lovely large pool and plenty of sun loungers and shaded veranda for those who wanted to stay out of the sun. The surrounding area was mainly farming land and housing - no village to speak of. There were a few restaurants and bars within walking distance - the most local restaurant (just a couple of minutes walk) had really good and inexpensive food and a good atmosphere.
The area surrounding the villa was unfortunately quite scruffy - big refuse bins at the end of the road and lots of rubbish surrounding the immediate area. This in no way detracted from the villa when you were inside the walled area of the villa and pool.
The villa itself was comfortable and clean. The kitchen was very well equipped and had everything you could possibly need. I would suggest to Mandy (the owner) that she invests in some new towels and bedding. The towels and bedding supplied were clean but definately past their best - nice towels and bedding make a huge difference to your comfort when you are on holiday.
Mandy was a great host - we arrived late at night so she had got some basics in for us for the following morning. She gave us useful information about the area and was there if we needed her. Although she lives in the villa next door we did not see her unless we needed something. She was extremely considerate to her guests.
You certainly need a car if you are staying at this villa - the beach area is about a twenty minute drive away and the supermarkets are a good 15 min drive away.
There are some interesting places to visit within easy driving distance - Cadiz (the old town in well worth a visit), Vejer- again well worth a visit. For the evenings we enjoyed going to Conil de la Frontera - a very spanish seaside resort about 15 mins drive away. It had a lovely atmosphere on an evening - busy with a real buzz about it. Loads of restaurants and bars to choose from on the narrow streets - well worth a visit.
We flew into Seville and it was an easy drive down to Chiclana - about 1 1/2 hours.
Overall we had a really good week with the weather being extremely kind to us.
Thank you for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay and, as you say, you were extremely lucky with the weather. There are supermarkets nearer to the villa but I try to send clients to an area where there is a choice of 2-3 all clustered together, variety being the order of the day! The Bath towels were new as of August 2018. I also provide hand towels, tea towels and beach towels at no extra cost. I also provide the option of a late (free) check in and always ensure there are supplies for my late arrivals. In this area of Spain the large refuse bins/bottle bank/cardboard/plastic recycling are placed at the ends of the road and at weekends during the summer get over used. They are emptied out daily and sprayed with disinfectant regularly. Bed linen is replaced on a frequent basis.
Las Mariposas Family Holiday
We really loved staying at Las Mariposas villa. The kitchen was well equipped with fridge freezer, freezer, cooker, microwave, dishwasher etc. Although we didn't use the television and video much, it was really good, with a big screen that Dad could watch the football on. The Wi fi was also very useful. The board games and books were great and the information about the local area and Andalusia in general were very helpful. We used the barbecue several times during our stay and ate outside on the patio which had a table with a lovely table cloth with butterflies (Mariposas) on. It was fabulous to have our own swimming pool which was secluded and was overlooked by no-one. The body boards and floats provided by the villa were a lovely touch and we enjoyed playing with them. Mandy welcomed us with wine and beer and other bits and pieces which was very nice of her. The bedrooms were comfortable and it was great to have en-suite facilities as well as the main bathroom. The air conditioning kept us cool at night. Pago Del Humo is a little bit out in the sticks, but we did have a walk to the Venta Florentina for some lovely food. Chiclana is just a short drive away with it's choice of supermarkets and other shops. The beaches at La Barossa, Sancti Petri, Conil and San Fernando were lovely and we enjoyed our adventure in the kayaks at Sancti Petri. Cadiz is just a short drive away and there was lots to do there including visiting the Torre Tavira tower with its Camera Obscura which was amazing. Jerez and Seville were a bit further to drive but well worth it as we saw a horsemanship show, visited the zoo at Jerez and visited the biggest Gothic cathedral in the world at Seville. A good family holiday enjoyed by all.
Lovely relaxing villa
Throughly enjoyed the villa, was very relaxing, had everything we needed, and situated in an area close to everything!
I am so glad that your holiday was such a success. I hope to see you again. The wee doggies were cute. Thank you for being such lovely clients.
The villa Las Mariposas is set in a central location, allowing a refreshing freedom and flexibility. It is set in a peaceful and quiet residential street, but only 5 minutes from the bustling town of Chiclana de la Frontera. The area of Pago del Humo has its own pub/restaurants, mini supermarkets with freshly baked bread, pharmacy, other amenities are at hand and the village stays open all year round.
The villa is 15 minutes easy drive to beautifully clean sandy beaches. Even the most popular beach 'La Barrosa' in peak season, has ample cheap car parking alongside. As for the beach area itself, plenty of space to spread out and relax. There are clean shower blocks and toilets and also Lifeguards are on duty in high season.
Short and off season breaks are becoming increasingly popular, where one can enjoy a self-catering property at a peaceful and unhurried time of the year. Spring and Autumn are a particularly pleasant time in which to explore the Cadiz area. This is the ideal time to go for a walk in the countryside to see the fauna and flora. Have day trips and explore the beautiful villages at Grazalema, Vejer de la Frontera, Ronda, Antequera, Barbate, Conil and Cape Trafalgar. Visit Tarifa and marvel at the kite and wind surfers. Walk the Roman ruins at Bolonia, visit the tax free shopping haven at Gibraltar and visit the Apes.
Enjoy nature at its best in this relatively unspoilt part of Spain.
The wonderful City of Cadiz, a short drive away, is a must to visit on your holiday in Andalucia, Costa de la Luz. The ancient city is approximately 3,000 years old. Cadiz is a very relaxed and easy-going city. People sit outside at the cafes all day long enjoying the cool sea breeze and warm sunshine, gazing up at the Moorish architecture. The old quarter is probably the most beautiful with the mansions of yesteryear merchants, towers, picturesque squares are awe inspiring. Visit a Roman Amphitheatre, admire the Moorish influences. Visit the grand Cathedral or the enormous Ficus trees in the parks and gardens with wild parrots. Shop in the main plaza/square, enjoy an ice cream or tapas in this beautiful area. Cadiz is so close to my holiday villas that many guests choose to spend more than one day visiting Cadiz.
Seville is known as the cultural city of Spain. It is about an hours drive. Or you can park (for free) at the local train station and for a moderate price let the train take you to the centre of Seville. Places to visit in Seville are the Cathedral and Giralda, the Tapas bars of Barrio Santa Cruz, the Alcazar, the Roman ruins of Italica at Santiponce, see the spectacular Plaza de Espana, take a river boat or horse and carriage trip. Take the children to Isla Magica Theme Park (Seville's Alton Towers) or visit one of the city's tablaos and experience a Flamenco Show.
For people who love nature - it is all here. The famous Donana Nature park with its pink flamingos is close by. The easiest way to explore this nature reserve from the Explorechiclana rental villas is to drive to Sanlucar de la Barrameda and catch a small foot-passenger ferry across the Guadalquivir river to the nature reserve.
Off road trails for walkers are abundant. They are the old Canadas (drover ways) which, in the past, the cattle drovers would bring their livestock to the port of Puerto de Santa Maria to provision the ships in the days of the Conquistadors. Bird watchers will see griffin vultures, storks, kestrels, buzzard, pink flamingos and many other species.
Beaches are not for everyone. This area abounds with Culture, History, Walking, Hiking, Riding, Water sports and Golf. The rental villas are centrally located for many daily trips out. The town of Jerez is 30 minutes drive. Take a tour of one of the famous Bodegas of Jerez and see how Sherry and Brandy are made. The town is rich with historic and artistic sites, one day is not enough!! Visit the Moorish Alcazar and gardens, the Clock museum, 15th century churches, the Flamenco museum etc.The performing horses of Jerez are a wonder to behold. For motor sports enthusiasts visit the famous race track. Formula 1 test their cars here and the Moto GP is normally the first one of the season.
