Dr. Maragos is a pioneer of coral reef conservation, and his wife, Diane, an artist and Hawaiian language book producer. We enjoy relaxing at this property when we have a little time off.
James E. Maragos purchased this condo in 2011
This is our refuge from the tension of Waikiki and Honolulu. Nothing we have experienced compares to the sheer force of a North Shore wave, especially during the Winter. It's easy to fall under their spell. My wife designed the unit to reflect the same standards of taste that she uses in our home: the sheets, towels, kitchenware and ammenities are top quality, and she and our cleaning staff work attentively to ensure that everything is in order for our guests.
Our condo has two bedrooms: a king bed, a queen bed, and a pull-out sofa bed. Our condo borders a golf fairway and with great views of the golf course and a window of the beach and ocean beyond. As an upstairs unit with a loft, there is better privacy, security, views, and ventilation from onshore trade winds. It is located far away from the highway and resort noise. When the windows are opened, the onshore breezes are sufficient to cool the condo. In fact, we owners have never found the need to use the AC. The condo has 2 HD TVs & 2 DVD players, DVDs, cable TV, internet access, wifi, a full kitchen with new appliances. We constantly make upgrades. Sports gear includes boogie boards, men & women golf clubs, tennis rackets, beach chairs, and several snorkeling sets and beach towels. We love our condo because it is quiet, our view, our access to many fun things to do, only minutes away.
When we arrived at the condo it was an absolute mess. Towels and sheets all over the floor and food left through the kitchen. After calling the owner he seemed very confused about who I was and that I was checking into the condo. He finally realised who I was and said the unit should have been cleaned the previous day. He said he would contact his cleaners and see if they could do it. The crib that was available was a timber crib which I had to build myself. Not a portable crib. It took approximately 30mins to build and did not come with a mattress. Cushions from a fold out bed were used. We cleaned the unit ourselves and made the beds with the spare sheets from the cupboards. The cleaner did arrive about dinner time and cleaned the kitchen and bathroom for us.
After checking out of the condo we left the keys where the owner instructed and placed all the dirty towels and sheets which were left by the previous guests in a pile near the washing machine to make it easier for the cleaner to wash them. The owner sent an email stating we were the worst guests he had ever had. He satiated we had used every towel and all the bedding. He said in his email we had taken the keys and the tool which I used to build the crib which I left in the same place I found it. He also said he was contacting the police if the keys were not returned. I contacted the owner advising him the keys and tool were in the place he had asked us to leave them.
The owner never apologised and also stated he was keeping our $100 damage deposit as the unit was left so messy and we used all the towels which was also not true as these were left by the previous guests.
The aircon in the bedroom is so noisy that it cannot be used if you want to sleep.
Will never stay here again.
As first time visiters to Hawaii, we were so glad we chose to stay in this location. Compared to Honolulu/Waikiki, it was much less crowded and was less than an hour's drive away from Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and other Honolulu attractions. The beaches at Turtle Bay were beautiful. The condo itself was very nice and had absolutely everything we would want or need including tennis rackets and snorkeling equipment. The washer and dryer inside the condo were a great convenience. It was very quiet and we loved eating on the lanai.
the condo has a limited view of the ocean in the distance, but it was only about a 10-15 minute walk away. Our kids loved the 3 pools that were there and my husband enjoyed the many nearby trails for hiking. We loved our stay there and would certainly recommend it.
Nice place, I felt safe and happy with the location and the amenities. We did have a problem at the beginning of our stay when the people before us didn't leave in time so the condo was not cleaned and ready for us at 4pm. The cleaner was so sweet though and tried her best, but it was uncomfortable walking into someone elses mess and having to wait till we could fully move in. This place is clean, outdated style but close to Turtle Bay so the location is the selling point.
This condo is perfectly positioned on the 1st fairway of the Fazio Golf Course at Turtle Bay and is very convenient to both golf courses, the beach and to the Resort itself. Basic supplies like coffee and condiments were included so with a full kitchen we could choose between eating out at the resort, at local roadside restaurants or cooking in the condo.
Some sporting equipment was also available for the use of the tenants.
We are a couple but the complex is also very suitable for family groups.
Our family really enjoyed our stay in Turtle Bay Kuilima Estates #74. The unit was clean, functional, and pleasant to be in. The price per night was very reasonable. We had everything we needed in terms of dishes, appliances, linens and towels. The unit is just steps away from the property's pool. It was a perfect home base for exploring the North Shore. All in all a great stay! If I had a suggestion it would be to upgrade the mattress in the master bedroom.
Turtle Bay is at the northern tip of the island of Oahu and is the farthest destination on the island from crowded Honolulu, Waikiki and remaining sub-cities to the south. It is the only resort situated in a windward rural area on the island. If you enjoy soft evening breezes, clean air, and dark quiet nights, then Turtle Bay is the best destination for visitors. The 3 nearest towns, Kahuku and Laie to the south and Pupukea-Haleiwa to the west, are quaint and popular destinations for both locals and visitors. There is a hospital at Kahuku.
The region is blessed with healthy pristine trade-winds during most of the year which keeps the region cool and lush from intermittent rain showers. Turlte Bay is at the northern tip of the island, adjacent to the North Shore to the west and the 'windward side' to the east which stretches from Kahuku at the northeast end, and Waimanalo at the southeast end of the coast. There are many parks, the best beaches and beach parks, botanical gardens, a few small restaurants and shopping centers and mostly small villages along the coast. Kaneone is the largest town along the northest coast, about 25 miles south of Turtle Bay. Other natural attractions are the ancient fishponds of Kaneohe Bay and the only offshore barrier reef and lagoon in Hawaii with many beach parks and opportunities for boating, glass-bottom boat, fishing, diving, opportunities. Kaneohe has a large mall with movie theaters, and a community college. Another college is located at Laie near the Polynesian Cultural Center, a major tourist attraction about 5 miles southeast from Turtle Bay. Another nearby popular attraction is a breathtaking view of windward coast from Laie Point.
Neighboring Kawela Bay to the west of Turtle Bay is a spectacular secluded beach surrounded by rain forests known locally as 'Paradise Beach'. It can be reached by car across Kam highway opposite the fruit stands just west of the Turtle Bay resort. Kawela Beach can also be reached by walking west along the coast from Turtle Bay. Further west is Pupukea which supports the most popular and safe snorkeling site, 'Sharks Cove Marine Life Conservation District' with spectacular reef fish and corals. Further west is the world reknown professional surf sites at Bonzai Pipeline (Ehukai), Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay. Waimea Falls Park is a popular botanical garden across the hghway from Waimea Bay. Futher west are additional famous surf sites including Chuns Reef to the west. Further west is Haleiwa Town, a meccca for artisans, surfers, divers, farmers, and related fruit stands, boutiques, surf-dive shops, other quaint shops, several restaurants, a famous bridge, a few shopping malls, several beach parks, and one protected small boat harbor which supports diving and sport fishing opportunities. World famous Haleiwa shave ice is also available at several stores in the middle of the town.
Turtle Bay Resort not only supports two large gated residental communities but a five-star hotel with all the major associated ammenities, including massage and hair parlors, restaurants, spas, saunas, swimming pools, beaches, volleyball, safe swimming areas etc. Horse-back riding, tennis, and golf are available there with a 10 minute walk. Visitors can rent bicycles and rent or use our snorkeling gear in the condo and otherwise explore the many beaches and paths within the resort and beyond for many miles in both directions along the coast.
