Mhor Farr is tucked away in the most beautiful part of Wester Ross, just a ten minute walk to the unspoilt white sands of Mellon Udrigle bay overlooking the Summer Isles. The house itself is warm comfortable and spacious and perfect for families or large groups to relax or enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities both locally and further afield.

Behind wooded gardens walk out onto open hillsides and look out over the sea to the Western Isles past fresh water lochans where eagles can be seen gliding overhead. It is a delight for nature lovers ( pine martins can be seen in the garden and deer just up the hill) and an ideal base for exploring all that the western highlands have to offer.

Enjoy stunning views and access to three of the greatest and most iconic Scottish mountain ranges: south to the Torridons, east to An Teallach and the 'last great wilderness' of the Fisherfields and north to Assynt and the Inverpolly National Nature Reserve.

About Alison Ingram

We are a family of five with teenage children who have been holidaying in this part of the highlands every year since the children were little. We have loved the area since first visiting here and enjoy the beach, hillwalking kayaking. It is also a great base for exploring further afield, from climbing munros to shopping in Ullapool. We are still making new discoveries every visit even after 20 years!

Why Alison Ingram chose Northern Scottish Highlands

We chose this property because of its character and extensive tree garden with different views of sea, mountains and garden from every room.The house itself is large and comfortable with plenty of communal space, and lovely views from the upper windows. The garden room with the wood burning stove has French windows opening onto the garden . With large windows overlooking the garden and the mountains beyond it is particularly relaxing to spend the day in. The lounge upstairs with the large open fire and satellite television is warm and cosy in the evening.

What makes this house unique

Exceptional scenery, unspoilt area with direct access to beautiful walks. Perfect sandy beach for young children and rock pools.Lots of wildlife...pine-martins live in the garden and bats at night. Sometimes in the early morning there can be Roe deer there too! Otters live nearby on the headlands. From the nearby coast we've seen porpoises, dolphins and even basking sharks in the summer! Very peaceful and relaxing though if your feeling energetic there's a full sized table-tennis table in the large conservatory and sit on top kayaks to use in the bay if you're competent.

Exactly as I expected

Faboulous place to spend a week or two, you will not be disappointed. Alison provides every little extra you could think of to make a perfect holiday whether you stay around the house or go for the many adventures to be found. The kayaks on the beach were the highlight for me, fabulous way to end the day, esp if you get calm seas and a sunset. Two buzzards were very active around the house with one even landing in the garden. I don't know who got the bigger fright, me or him! :)

Although I rented Mhor Farr for myself and a few friends I would aslo highly recommmend for a family or extended family wanting to spend quality time together, esp if you want a place where you can relax & enjoy without the worry all week of spilling a drink or breaking a plate, it's a home, not a showroom. Perfect!

Wonderful location and scenery

The description of the house is completely accurate and the owners are very helpful and accommodating. The house is ideally located in a stunning part of Scotland. Literally five/ten minutes walk down to Mellon Udrigle bay with white sand, turquoise sea (on a sunny day of course!) flanked by rocks and rock pools. Our children spent nearly every day happily playing on the beach, climbing, digging, rock pooling; so its a low cost option compared to lots of family holidays. Even in less than perfect weather - which lets face it you have to accept is a possibility if you holiday in Scotland - the scenery is equally (if not more) majestic. If you decide not to venture out though he house is well stocked with books, DVDs, TV and plenty of space for kids to play (including table tennis table). While adults can escape to either the big lounge with open log fire, or the peaceful garden room with log burner and lovely views over the garden and heather bank.

Altbea or Gairloch pier are well worth a visit for casting for mackerel in the summer months and flat fish are to be had with baits off Mellon Beach. There are loads of tourist activities including a swimming pool at Poolewe (about 15 minutes by car). Shops are handy (Laide is five miles away) as are lots of nice cafes and bars. We highly recommend the Perfume Studio at Altbea for coffee, light snacks and views and the new restaurant in the Albea hotel is excellent. We did the glass bottom boat trip at Gairloch and its good too.

Only regret is we couldn't stay longer!

Some great cycling to be had (for those who like that) with great workout to be had on the slopes! There aren't many loops (unless your taking on 100+ distance) but the out a backs go through such amazing scenery who cares?

Great stay

We (2 families, together 10 persons) stayed at the house for two weeks and we felt like home from the beginning. When we arrived, even the fireplace was prepared, so we only had to light the fire.

We can definitely recommend this location for a relaxing holiday within the Scottish wilderness.

We really wanted people to have all the comforts of home and have a reasonably stocked kitchen so that they didn't have to bring everything with them. We are just back from a week up there and enjoyed the pictures and comments in the book. We were excited to hear seals singing and saw a sea-eagle for the first time! Spacious unique house in a beautiful location

I didn't know what to expect from the highlands at mid-term but we had a lovely time in the area. It must be one the loveliest parts of the highlands with a stunning mixture of mountain sea and stunning wildlife. The house was great with extensive gardens and great views. I loved the garden room with the wood burning stove and garden views and then the lively table tennis tournaments in the massive conservatory. Loved it there....thanks for letting us stay!!

The local area is a paradise for walkers kayakers and nature lovers. You can leave the car in the driveway, wander down to the beach (there are two close by - each less than 10 minutes walk away), walk around the headlands facing the Summer Isles or else around Greenstone Point or maybe even venture up the hill behind the house with views to Skye, Shiant Islands and on a clear day the Western Isles!

Wildlife we've seen there....otters, pine martins, deer, porpoises dolphins and even basking sharks in the summer. The nearby sandy beach is perfect for young children to play with a shallow lagoon on the eastern edge where children can look for fish, hermit crabs and shrimps. If you have the experience and are feeling energetic take our sit on tops kayaks out into the large bay at Mellon Udrigle where you can see large shoals of mackerel in the summer and even catch your tea! Get a cheap fishing permit and go angling for brown trout in the many small lochans within walking distance. Cycle or walk to the abandoned coastal hamlet of Slaggan....a mile or so down a rough track to a beautiful sandy beach in a steep sided cove which is lovely for a picnic on a sunny day. If you can drag yourself away from the immediate area then by car there is the whole of the North West Highlands on your doorstep. Lovely wilderness walks to Fionn Loch or over the pass from Poolewe to Loch Maree....there really are too many to mention. Whatever you do we're sure you'll enjoy it ......we've been enjoying the area for twenty years and still find new places to explore.
