Great space for large groups, family gatherings, celebrations, anniversaries and retreats!
Loved the house, the beach, having fun grilling on the back deck with family! The kids had so much fun and it was perfect for the adults who wanted to relax and make great memories. The perfect beach for fishing, volleyball, kayaking, and clamming! We can't wait to be back next year
We needed a large house for a family reunion, most of us from out of state. This fit our needs. Yes, the house needs some TLC...new carpets, a good paint job, some new beds and bedding. But it slept 20 of us and gave us tons of space to gather or hide!!
It has been hot on our visit. Because of this there was a bit of grumbling on sleeping in the heat so we spent a lot of time on the porches. Fans are plentiful and there is one small window AC unit you can move into a room of anyone who cannot stand the heat. But I think this was unusual weather.
The beach access is close but with 124 steps, the older folks in our family could not get down there. However there are three benches at the top of the hill they can sit upon.
So know that this is a beautiful old lady with creaky bones and wrinkles. If you can't handle that, I recommend a bunch of hotel rooms. But you will miss out of some fun and history.
Pros: This massive old house has a wonderful yard, lovely porch, plenty of room. It has across the street access to a fun for kids beach (swimming, paddleboarding, hermit crab collecting). The sunrise over the water is stunning. The common areas in and outside were plentiful and allowed for the family reunion to have lots of places to go for privacy as well as group conversations, games and activities. It's nice and close to a grocery store, gas station, and minutes away from down town Plymouth/Mayflower/Plantation etc.
Cons: I have slept on better and newer mattresses in middle-of-nowhere Ethiopia. I was so sore after two nights on our bed I had to drive home to Framingham and leave our family reunion so I could get a good night's sleep. The pillows were old (and disturbingly discolored when I took the pillow cases off before we left), the beds creaky and old, the sheets were very old, I know because my mother used those same sheets on my bed 28 years ago when I was a child. The bed spread appeared to be made from a 70s polyester leisure suit and was unbreathable, and wildly uncomfortable. My husband and I both had to go home the beds were so bad. My kids didn't sleep well either but didn't want to leave because they were having fun with cousins. If I'd come from out of state and couldn't go home to a real bed I might have been tempted to find a hotel with a decent mattress. To me, a vacation means being able to to actually rest. That was the one thing I couldn't do here.
The kitchen was fine, the old stove is cool through a little dangerous for children to be around. The lack of a garbage disposal was annoying and would make it easier when cooking and preparing food for 24 people at a time.
If it were my dime I'd never rent the house again based on the bed situation alone despite everything else being adequate or even great. If our family ever wants to go there again, I will not be able to make it more than a few days.
We rent this house for us and our guests for our wedding weekend (wedding was held elsewhere) and every single person praised the house and we all had a great time overlooking the ocean with the full moon our first night! The kitchen is meant to be cooked in and we did -- the dining room holds all for dinner and we had not one issue or complaint. The owners live nearby and truly care for this historical Grand Dame. I will be renting it for an upcoming event and truly look forward to another visit at the Idlewild!
The house is huge and great for large groups. The house itself has a quite a bit of character. It is an older home with all of the character that older homes bring and then some. The finishing touches are very New England and adorable. It is a beach house and located directly across the street from the stairs that lead to the beach. The views of the water from the front of the house are just breathtaking, particularly at sunrise (if you can get up that early it is worth it). They have a lovely front porch with rocking chairs and other seating to soak in the view. There is also a nice back deck with two grills and a huge yard for the kids to play in. The pwners provide authentic Mexican beach blankets to use on the beach for you as well. The beach is lovely and the view of the water is so pretty from above. I really enjoy staying at this home and highly recommend staying at this rustic Oceanfront Home if you are looking for a place to stay for your family in Plymouth MA.
Wow, what a wonderful, majestic house, steps from stairs to the beach. We had a great time relaxing on the beach, kayaking, and chatting over drinks on the front porch while some of our other family members took trips into Plymouth and throughout the Cape.
The best part of the house is that it's three stories so you can be with your family and also indulge yourself in some quiet time. We can't wait to get back !
