We take great pleasure in sharing our vacation home. Dancing Bear is enhanced by antique accents, local crafts, original and unique paintings, and mountain decor. We treat it as our home and you will feel that as soon as you walk through the door. We try to think of everything so all you have to do is settle in and enjoy.

For the outdoor enthusiasts, we have walking sticks, maps, a tepee for kids, sleds for the hill, and a national wilderness to explore right out your door. There is a seasonal mountain stream perfect for kids exploration and enjoyment. We keep a canoe on Sand Run Lake for guest's use.

Dancing Bear has been the setting for family reunions, birthday celebrations, welcome home celebrations, and Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. We appreciate the many repeat visitors who have incorporated Dancing Bear into their vacation traditions.

Dancing Bear is managed by a local property manager to ensure rapid response to your vacation needs.

About Karen Williams

Family originally from the midwest who found ourselves in the busy DC metropolitan area. We looked for a place where we could enjoy nature, bond as a family and enjoy the great outdoors. We found it in the Canaan Valley!

Karen Williams purchased this house in 1995

Why Karen Williams chose West Virginia

Our family of five fell in love with the entire area. It is such a naturally beautiful area with trees that you would expect to see in Canada. There is only one stoplight in the county and the pace of life is so relaxed. Your focus is different here - the beauty of new snow, the sound of Canada Geese, the sound of the fire crackling in the fireplace. This has been such a great way to decompress from our hectic lives in Northern Virginia. The kids are older now but we will always have fond memories of the the great times we shared there.

The kitchen is well equipped with utensils, spices, basic condiments, cookware, and bakeware. Small electrical appliances include blender, toaster, coffee grinder, and electric griddle - perfect for our favorite mountain breakfast of bacon and pancakes. There are several sitting areas on the porch - comfortably furnished with a wicker swing and Adirondack chairs. Settle back and watch the hummingbirds visit the feeder. The house is family friendly with books, puzzles, games, videos, and toys.

We had a unbearable stay at the dancing bear lodge because there was dirt pushed under rugs, the fridge smelled awful, the hot tub turned cloudy and smelled horrid, and they didn't provide enough details on where the canoe was and therefore we were not able to use them, also apparently they only had one canoe for a house that sleeps ten people, the wifi was only working for about half of us, the shower heads didn't work well at all with not enough water pressure, the room upstairs with two double beds smelled like a dirty hamster cage, and to make matters worse there were crusty underwear in one of the dressers., we actually had to clean the house the first day we arrived because it was left in awful condition...........this is UNACCEPTABLE for the price that we payed!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to make us aware of these unacceptable conditions. Your observations will ensure that future guests can focus on the reason they are there - to enjoy the beauty of the area with a clean attractive home base to retreat to. No guest should have to clean our home - a call to the property manager should have resulted in a cleaning crew and hot tub specialist immediately dispatched to the house to remedy the situation. I am appalled at what you describe but fortunately most of your issues are easily resolved. The water pressure is not something we control but we can replace the shower heads which will improve the pressure and I appreciate your pointing that out. We provide the canoe as an additional amenity for our guests and am sorry you expected we would have more than one. The mountains offer incredible beauty and opportunity for recreation but those same mountains can affect the wireless signal that we take for granted in a more urban, less hilly environment. We use Canaan Cable for our TV and internet which is the most reliable and powerful the Canaan Valley has to offer. In conclusion, I offer my sincere apologies for your experience and thank you again for your candid helpful comments.

Relaxing stay in remote location with friends

  • 4 of 5

Had a 5 day stay here in Dancing Bear Lodge with friends from across the northeast. Found a very relaxing location, well away from neighbors, and just about everything. Quite remote, so arriving during the day was a necessarily. Plenty of room in this aging mountain home. While we missed the peak of the fall season by about week, we still enjoyed the crisp fall clean air, great sunrises and sunsets by the lake, and hikes down the dirt roads. While the DBL can use some TLC, we all felt quite a home with the amble bedrooms and baths, and a great porch and fire pit. Sitting fireside in the living room is where we all ended up each night, with good stories, games and yes, a little TV. Even the dogs felt right at home on their beds protecting the hearth, or relaxing on the front deck keeping a watchful eye out. Great time for our 5 adults, 3 kids & 2 pups. Thank you for opening your home to us!

Summer Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had some plumbing issues that were resolved very promptly by maintenance staff. The support staff overall was absolutely wonderful. Outside the very-promptly resolved plumbing issues, the cabin was quite relaxing and well-stocked, definitely home away from home. Nice and quiet, with a stream right next to the cabin. We really enjoyed canoeing on the lake, being so close to Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, and having such super-easy access to Dolly Sods (within Timberline development). The WIFI worked fine. Nicely decorated, well-lit interior. Pet-friendly means dog-friendly, we inquired on bringing our cat and were told no cats. Did end up bringing a dog. Would recommend, but pet-friendly should be changed to dog-friendly.

Loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 8, including a young teenager, and two 70-something year olds, and this house was just perfect. With 5 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms, there was plenty of space for everybody. The kitchen is not huge, but it is more than well-stocked, with several full sets of dishes, and a nice assortment of pots and pans. The house has lots of storage space in general, with a dresser and full-size closets in each bedroom. Unfortunately, we didn't have great weather for our visit, so we weren't able to take full advantage of the lake and hiking trails, etc. But we certainly enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, especially the large, covered porch, which is actually so deep as to be able to sit out there during a pretty strong rain storm and not get wet. The owner was very responsive to questions, both about the house itself, as well as the general area. The location is a bit remote, which we enjoyed, but there are 2 convenience stores within 10-15 minutes, and a full grocery store about 25 minutes away, as well as some good local restaurants. We would all go back to this house in a heartbeat, and I really hope that we get the opportunity!!

Our review

  • 4 of 5

Great house, with wonderfully secluded location. We had a full crew and there was plenty of room for all. The use of the canoes was a great perk. We had a bear visit the driveway one evening and the kids loved looking for frogs in the pond on the lot. We got a kick out of the abundance of coffee machines at our disposal. Clearly a lot of like minded coffee drinkers rent this place.
