Akala Pua (Pink Hibiscus) is a lovely three bedroom, three full bathroom home located less than 100 yards from Poipu's Baby Beach and very near Lawai Beach in sunny Poipu, Kauai. Akala Pua is a lovely Hawaiian plantation style home with a whitewater ocean view that will take you back to old Hawaii. Maybe that is why our guests just love Akala Pua! The house design brings families together to talk and bond. The location gives them plenty of choices. And the decoration and furnishing makes it comfortable. But see for yourself -- visit the guestbook to see how much everyone loves their vacation in Akala Pua.
Driving to Poipu, people always wonder “Did I rent a good house?” Drive four houses past Akala Pua, your first thought will be “WOW! The ocean is really close!” Then you may wonder where to park your car because the parking area for Akala Pua is beautiful lawn growing through concrete blocks. So drive right on the lawn! Walk up the meandering walk to the front porch, remove your shoes and step into the entry of this Hawaiian plantation style home and you immediately begin to see the great decorating and furnishings. Original oil paintings and natural wood trim and doors scream out “Hawaii!” You start to feel the gentle breezes that flow through and cool this house because every room has cross ventilation. Perhaps your children “OOH” and “AAH” when they see their room, and it really hits you, “This is better than home!”

Original Hawaiian oil paintings graces several walls. You will also start to feel the gentle breezes that flow through and cool this house because every room has cross ventilation.
From the entry, turn left and walk upstairs into the great room with its twelve foot high vaulted wood-beam ceilings and ceiling fans. On the left is the living area with a panoramic view on three sides, decorated with a large rattan sofa, a two person rattan loveseat, and a comfortable rattan easy chair with ottoman. The entertainment center has a flat screen television with a DVD player and a CD stereo system with Hawaiian CD's provided. On the right is the glass dining table for eight with rattan chairs and the kitchen. The kitchen is modern and spacious with granite countertops. There is a GE range with microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator. From the kitchen sink you can see the whitewater ocean view past the dining table. The kitchen is completely stocked. In addition to all the pots, pans and cooking utensils you will need, there are matching sets of dishware, glassware, knives and silverware. Since you will need more than that to cook a meal, you will usually find aluminum foil, saran wrap, baggies, wax paper, coffee filters, paper napkins, paper towels, dish liquid and dishwasher soap, plus many other necessary kitchen supplies.
Outside the great room is a 100 square foot roofed lanai with a table and four chairs that is great for morning breakfast or evening meals or just watching the sunsets.
Back downstairs are the bedrooms, the laundry, a storage room, and the garage.
On the far right side of the entry is the first master bedroom suite decorated island style. This bedroom has a sliding door on one wall and windows another wall plus a ceiling fan for great ventilation. The California king-size bed is firm and an original oil painting hangs over it. There are bedside tables, a full dresser, and a 19" television. The private bathroom for this bedroom has dual lavatories, a five-foot shower, a toilet and windows to keep it from steaming up.
On the far left side of the entry is the second master bedroom suite nearly identical to the first one and also decorated island style. In the middle is the third bedroom with two twin beds that can be made into an Eastern king bed for just a $25 fee. It also has three tropical bedside tables, and a dresser. There is a sliding door out to a 100 square foot covered lanai that makes an ideal place to sit and enjoy morning coffee. It also has two windows and a ceiling fan to keep it cool. This bedroom has its own bathroom across the hall with dual lavatories, a shower, toilet, and windows to keep it from steaming up.
Past the bedrooms is the separate laundry room with washer, dryer and sink. Next to that is the storage room that holds the beach chairs, sand toys, and coolers. Previous guests may have left boogie boards and snorkeling gear.
Outside Akala Pua is a 3000 square foot lawn with chaise lounges for sunbathing on those days when you don't want to make the 3 minute walk to the beach. The lawn is also home to a gas barbecue. Akala Pua shares this lawn with our two bedroom home, Ahe Lani.

Aloha from Jim and Valorie Wisda. We recently moved to Scottsdale, Arizona from Palos Verdes Estates, California where we raised a wonderful son and daughter. We have been coming to Poipu since 1970 and no matter how often we travel to other places or countries we visit, like this picture in Thailand, we always look forward to coming back to Poipu several times a year.
Buzz Wisda purchased this house in 2005
We bought the lot a few years after hurricane Iniki while the cost of lots was still low because it offered us the opportunity to help vacationers experience a really wonderful house in a good location at an affordable rent. This house is just two houses back from the ocean, and the rent is less than half of those houses less than 100 yards away! This is really one of the best values in Poipu. It is a great house in a very good location at a fair and affordable rent.
Whitewater ocean view. Lushly landscaped yard. Privacy.
Best of all, the open living area promotes family gatherings with places to sit and 'talk story', but with plenty of room for everyone to have adequate space.
Enjoyed the house and the beaches and the hikes and our two grandchildren and our aughter and son-in-law. Had great weather, saw whales on our last day at Poipu Beach.
From start to finish, the owner was very communicative and easy to deal with. There were 7 of us that included, myself, husband, son, daughter in law, 5 month old grandson plus our two college age children. The home was just beautiful & super clean. The kitchen, linens, paper products and soaps were well stocked. Beds were comfortable and having 3 bathrooms was great! The layout was excellent, plenty of room for everyone. You could sleep in or go to bed early and others be upstairs and it was quiet. We rented a car but there were plenty of places to walk to from the home. You could easily walk to baby beach & Da Crack for yummy take out burritos & the Shops at Kukui'ula where there were restaurants, coffee, ice cream shop, grocery & drug store. The walk to Spouting Horn, Sheraton, Marriott & Poipo Beach wasn't too far either. The furniture & grounds of the home were really well maintained. There were plenty of beach towels and beach chairs in the garage. I was a little worried before we came about the lack of air conditioning but Buzz assured us it would be just fine and it was. We wouldn't have needed it at all! We went to the Costco & grocery across the street from Costco(can't remember the name) in Lihue when we arrived at the airport for snacks, drinks and diapers. We thought the prices weren't too bad at all. We rented a crib, baby backpack & beach tent for our grandson from Ready Rentals. They were great and had it all set up before we arrived. We would definitely rent this home again and totally recommend it!
I did a lot of research before choosing Akala Pua for our Kauai vacation. On paper, the price was good, and the house seemed to meet all our needs. When we arrived, I was pleased that everything was as advertised.
As you walk in the front door, the ground floor has 3BD/3BA. This worked well for us, as each of our two kids could have their own bedroom and bathroom. The beds were comfortable. There is also a laundry room with late model washer/dryer. (This really came in handy as our clean clothes started to dwindle near the end of our stay.)
Upstairs is a large room with living area, dining area (with large dining table), and a kitchen. The kitchen was well-supplied: the only thing we really needed to buy to cook meals was the food. This room has high vaulted ceilings that added to the sense of space. There were numerous windows all over the house that could let the trade winds in, and ceiling fans in every room. This allowed us to stay relatively comfortable during hot humid days and nights.
The location was ideal. A five minute walk west on Lawai road takes you to Lawai Beach, which is a bit rocky, but has good snorkeling (you can rent snorkel equipment right there at Boss Frogs). A five minute walk west takes you to the Kukui’ula Shopping Center with some good restaurants and shops (and generally has several musicians in outside in the evenings to). For shopping, the Kukui’ula Market is about a block away (a lot less expensive than the Living Food Market in the shopping center!). A five minute drive takes you to the Poipu Beach Park, with great swimming/wading for the family, as well as some really good snorkeling.
Restaurants in the resort/tourist areas are generally good but expensive. I recommend also trying out diners and cafes frequented by locals as the food is excellent, copious, and reasonable. You sometimes have to search those out. Here are a couple of suggestions: Tip Top Café in Lihue and the Waipouli Deli & Restaurant in Kapaa.
We called the management company (Garden Island Rentals) once with a question. They were responsive and friendly.
We had a great time in the perfect house for a family.
Beautiful home, very near the beach, with the perfect layout for friends/family who like to travel together, but also want a little privacy. As the info shows, the three bedrooms (two with en suite baths, the third one has bath across the hall, but its private lanai compensates) were all level 1, and the kitchen, dining and living area were on level 2. That made it easy for early risers (like I am) to drink a cup of coffee on the upstairs lanai, or eat breakfast without disturbing others. Nicely furnished, well stocked with anything you might need (even kitchen gadgets I don't myself have), and comfortable. Within walking distance to a shopping area with restaurants, a drug store, and grocery. The lanai can easily seat six, though ad shows four. Shared backyard has privacy from front yard/street with ample space, and has lounge chairs and a grill. Due to some minor questions, I had to contact the owner directly, and he was helpful and accommodating...Highly recommend..!
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home on Kauai
It fit our needs perfectly with bedrooms downstairs and living area above
Close to baby beach for the grandkids and walking distant to many places from restaurants , shopping, and snorkeling
The house was clean, well stocked in kitchen , and coolers and sand toys in the garage
Thank you for sharing your home to complete a wonderful vacation for our family

On a scale of 1 to 10, this house and location would rate a 10. Two other couples and my wife and I had a wonderful time here. The upstairs great room with deck was very roomy and comfortable. I have never stayed at a better appointed rental property. Everything was provided (except food, of course), and there was more than an ample back up supply of linens, towels, soaps, etc. There was no A/C, but the proximity to the ocean, together with ceiling fans in every room and excellent window locations made an A/C unnecessary. It was very evident by the quality of the furniture, by the yard maintenance, and by the cleanliness of the property that the owners take a lot of pride in this house
The only down side was the center bedroom, which had two twin beds. We drew straws, and my wife and I were lucky to get one of the two bedrooms with a king bed. I understand the rationale of a room with two twins, i.e. if you had two children who wanted their separate beds. In spite of this, all beds were firm and comfortable.
If I were to stay in Kauai again, I would not spend time looking for another place to stay. Everyone in group was more than pleased with the property.
1st, the house is in a great spot and we enjoyed our stay on the island. There's construction next door that we didn't know about but it felt like white noise for the majority of our stay. There are little things around the house that could use tweaking (I.e. Ice machine doesn't work, dish washer is iffy, warm showers are few and far between), but these things really didn't get to us as our plan was to chill, take it easy & relax - we are typically an easy going bunch. Where things got hairy was on our last full day when completely unknown to us a gardening company showed up to do 1.5 months worth of gardening catch up in 1 day. It had been authorized by the owner who was on the island at the time but didn't bother to notify us even though he had stopped by a few days prior. The major issue here - beyond the lack of communication - was that we had 2 babies with us that were howling while they should have been napping because it was so loud right outside of the bedrooms. We spoke to the landscapers, who were wonderful, and they indicated they'd be happy to return after the weekend to complete their work. We tried calling the owner to notify him and got his wife...who indicated that it sounded good that they'd return Monday. We went out for a bit despite cranky and tired babies and returned for nap #2 to find the landscapers had returned. Buzz had ordered them to come back and complete the work. We asked them to leave again & called Buzz once again to discuss and notify him of our displeasure. He was quick to indicate that 'had I answered my phone' earlier he would have been able to explain, which certainly set the tone for a couple of very angry conversations. Here's the thing...if he had bothered to communicate with us, we would have tried to work out a win for both sides...but without knowing, & based on his approach to not provide customer service but rather make outlandish suggestions (I.e. Why don't you take the kids to the canyon while the guys work, why don't we refund you for your last night & you pack your kids up and stay in a hotel so we can get the yard cleaned up, the guys can't come any other day (even though they told us they could come Monday) & the list goes on) we won't be back! So this is our review: the place could use an update & some tweaks but it works, the location is nice, but the owner lacks sense, customer service, and respect for young families. Just hope nothing comes up during your stay. The mgt company didn't return our calls
The best activity on the island is a boat tour of the Napali Coast, and this is available through a number of boat companies. There are also helicopter charters for touring the island. Waimea Canyon can be accessed by car and takes about 1/2 day.
