Visit: July 29 - August 5, 2006

We give the cottage on Burns Lake our highest rating! Everything was delightful--the cottage itself, the grounds, the game room, the lake, and of course, our gracious hosts!

No motors are allowed on the lake, and it is just the right size for taking out the (provided) canoe and paddleboat. It is also quiet, with about half the shoreline bordered by the National Forest. Our 5 year old daughter caught scads of panfish and small bass, much to her delight!

The kids also couldn't get enough of the game room; we often had to pull them away from pool and air hockey to enjoy the "real" world.

And enjoy it we did! From pristine Pere Marquette Beach, to the giant dunes of Silver Lake, to the Coast Guard festival in Grand Haven, to the tranquility of Burns Lake itself, we were never at a loss for something keep us entertained.

Our sincere thanks to John and Jan for making our stay a wonderful experience.

A wonderful place to reconnect and enjoy nature!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was everything we hoped it would be and lacked for nothing in the way of accommodations. The surroundings were peaceful and very relaxing. We enjoyed fishing from the paddle boat, tennis, and even tried our hand at table tennis and billiards in the game room. The first night we arrived coincided with the Perseid Meteor shower so one of our favorite memories will be the giant meteor streaking across the sky while we enjoyed a lovely campfire. Thank you John and Janet for providing such a terrific vacation treasure! We highly recommend the cottage to others and plan to come back!

A relaxing but busy weekend stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a terrific time at the cottage! The owners were both very helpful, present if we needed anything but absolutely never obtrusive. The cottage is small, but we had plenty of room for our family of four. We took advantage of every amenity: we went fishing on the lake (I caught my first bass), jumped on the trampoline, played in the game room, played tennis on the court, and cooked out on the grill. There was a ton to do and see nearby. We especially loved Pere Marquette beach and the amazing ice cream choices at Hometown Creamery. We would recommend this property to anyone.

Just What We Wanted

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our two children loved the cottage! It was exceptionally clean and there were no unexpected surprises. My only misinterpretation was that I thought the cottage was right on the lake, but it isn't. It is at the front of the property near the street. It was still wonderful and secluded and is at the end of the dirt road, so it is very quiet and secluded. John and Janet welcomed us our 1st day and respected our privacy for the duration of our stay. They stressed that their property was ours to enjoy. The lake is beautiful and the hot tub at night is awesome! Having two children we enjoyed: the game room and trampoline, go-karts, putt-putt, Michigan Adventures, Coast Guard Festival at Grand Haven, the city of Grand Rapids, and Mac Wood's dune buggy rides through the Silver Lake sand dunes-WOW what a great time! It was a fun-filled and relaxing vacation. Good restaurants are the Lake House and Hobo's Tavern. Bad restaurant is The Boar's Belly....food and service was bad. We would definitely stay again and recommend to our friends & families.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much we are glad you had such a great vacation. I thought our ad made it clear that the estate was waterfront but that the gate house cottage was set back from the lake. Next season we will add "no lake view from Cottage" Hope to see you again.

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

My new hubby and I were looking for a place to get away and decompress. If you are looking for a place to hit "reset" and to eliminate the stresses of city life - this is it! Even though internet/tv/cell phone use is available - I recommend just turning them off! The peaceful and natural environment at this cottage are incredibly therapeutic. This place is a Gem!

The cottage is cute, clean, cozy and comfortable. The grounds are well kept and open - lots of space to play lawn games or just take a nice stroll. We were too lazy to take advantage of the game room but it could entertain kids and adults for hours. We did enjoy getting out on the lake in the paddle boat and dinner outdoors in the screened in gazebo. The hot tub overlooking the lake as the sun set was heaven!

Thank you Jan and John for opening up the cottage to us!

A wonderful getaway!!

  • 5 of 5

This is the fourth time we have stayed at the cottage and were pleased as always with our two-week stay. John and Jan are such a nice couple and made an extra effort to ensure that we were happy and well taken care of. The cottage has air conditioning, cable and Internet access as well as a washer and dryer. This is indeed a peaceful place to stay. My wife and I canoed nearly every day on the calm lake and took advantage of the game room and tennis court. The cottage is in easy driving distance of places such as Muskegon State Park, Grand Haven (good shopping) and Meijer (groceries) as well as various restaurants (make sure and stop at the Hometown Creamery for ice cream on M-120/Holton Road!!!). Do yourself a favor and try it out...you definitely won't be disappointed!! : )
