The 'Pond House' is a spacious 1000 square foot. cottage with a full front screened lanai. The tropical landscaping center piece is a tide pond. Light and airy are the full kitchen and living room.
In the main house, there are two tropical ceramic tile bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed, the other with two singles that can be converted to a king. Both bedrooms open to an outside lanai for sunbathing or star gazing. Additionally a 200 square foot separate guest room (a third bedroom), with outdoor bath house, is available to accommodate a larger group.
I have lived in Kapoho for 35 years, own a landscape and orchid farm, raised a family here and feel grateful to share the beauty of this areas, in a more natural and peaceful atmosphere of simple living.
Jan Anderson purchased this cottage in 2000
I watched the 'Pond House' being built in the 80's because I lived across the street. I always liked it because it had a large tidal pond in the front yard and a 300 acre undisturbed property behind it. The house itself was built in a way to have light and air and the beauty of nature be part of every room in the house. I have enjoyed furnishing and decorating the 'Pond House' so it feels like an intimate, easy going, get away.
My cottage has the feeling of 'old Hawai`i. Sitting or laying down in the screened lanai, you are surrounded by nature, looking out onto a tidal pond, hearing the open ocean waves and watching palm trees catching the wind....very peaceful.
Plus, it is very easy to go from the house, down a trail to the open ocean tidepool area, for snorkeling, catching a sunrise or just exploring!
Our family of five (two parents, three young adult children) had a wonderful stay at the Pond House. It was well supplied with what we needed and the addition of the guest house meant we could get away from each other when necessary. The nearby town of Pahoa has some good restaurants and also a market (we cooked a lot of our own meals) and other services. The Kapoho Tide Pools are only steps away from the house, so you can have an adventure without driving anywhere. The setting of the house is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. The owners obviously take pride in the property and they were also extremely kind to us when we needed some extra help.
This house was fun but it was a little run down. It is a fair price, though, given location, and sleeping capacity. The kids LOVED the tide pools, the "pond" and its inhabitants. We loved the location, getting to Hilo or the Volcano park was a cinch. Jan and her husband were out of town, so her daughter opened it up for us. It was hot and stale in there, but we cooled on the comfy lanai. I think my daughter slept there the first night. My wife had a millipede crawl across her and she brushed it in her sleep. Shortly after she woke up in a discomfort and had a blister swelling on her neck. I got one on the face and wrist. It really was a pretty mild blister, looking worse than it felt. The beds were not comfortable, and it was hard to sleep knowing we could be "attacked" by millipedes in our sleep. For the cost, uniqueness, and location, I would give it 4 stars, but have to knock it down one due to bugs and the beds.
This property was perfectly suited for my friend and I. Not too fancy but very comfortable meeting all of our needs. Plus, Wai'opae tide pool was only a few steps from our door...absolutely stunning! Thank you Jan for making our stay truly an unforgettable one!
We've been coming to Kapoho with our family for years now, stayed at lots of different rentals. This is our favorite! It's got a gem of a location--just a very short walk out the front door to one of our favorite places to swim on the island. We bring bikes and love riding thru the quiet streets, looking at all the different warm ponds and houses. Only 8 miles from Pahoa where you can find terrific restaurants (take out a NY pizza and bring it back to the house!). Jan has made such a welcoming atmosphere in her house--feels real homey. This is a real find.
After driving 3+ hours from Kona, over the Saddle Road, we reached our destination, the Anderson cottage next to the Kapoho tidal pools.
The location could not have been more perfect - we were only about 30 yards from the tidal pool entrance.
Upon entering the cottage, we saw a wonderful screen porch running the length of the house (30-40 feet), and about 12 feet wide. We could have lived on this porch the whole time.
We also saw throughout the cottage a number of geckos - both on the porch, and in the house. They were friendly, and we did not see any other uninvited insect guests while we were there.
The front half of the house was a combined kitchen/dining/great room. Everything worked!!
The back half was 2 bedrooms, one with a king bed, the other a queen, and some storage. The bathroom/shower was between the 2 bedrooms, and could only take 1 person comfortably. There was an outdoor shower/bath facility that could be used, if you wanted to go about 15 feet from the rear doors - each bedroom has access to a rear deck, that lead to the outdoor facilities.
The only 2 downsides to the location - no air conditioning (plenty of fans), and the public pathway to the tidepools went on the roadway/parking area of the cottage. You will need to lock up your car and cottage anytime you leave.
Also, the nearest restaurants, and grocery stores, were in Pahoa, about a 10-mile (15-20 minute) drive from the cottage.
We loved our stay at the cottage! We arrived late at night tired and sore from a long day of travel and the home was just what we needed. Getting to the cottage was easy and the smell of the orchids, the breeze and the sound of the ocean put us to sleep immediately. In the morning I made my coffee and breakfast in the well equipped kitchen and set out to find the ocean, I was so excited to find that it was right next to the home! It was so great to not have to worry about packing up the car and lugging all your stuff to the beach. We visited quite a few snorkel spots on the island and we both agree that the tidal pools that are a 30 second walk from the home were by far the best. We saw great coral (careful not to walk on it), colorful fish and even a turtle, it was like swimming in a fish bowl! The tide pool in front of the home was neat and the home is lovely but the LOCATION is unbeatable. The house has working cable for unwinding at night, a comfy bed, a big back porch to watch the stars and (my husband's favorite part), a second OUTDOOR bathroom :-). We even liked the fan in the bedroom so much that we bought it when we got home, haha. Jan wasn't around but she was easy to reach when we had an issue with the internet connection (which she fixed right away). We would be lucky to stay here again if we ever make it back to the big island. Mahalo Jan for letting us stay at your beautiful home and for your thoughtful honeymoon surprise, aloha! :-)
