About the property

Villa Maria Doria

In Forte dei Marmi much has changed during the succeeding five centuries, but the basic architectural integrity of the original structure of the villa remains, and the ambience of the old olive grove continues to influence the entire property.Villa Maria Doria began in the 1500’s as a country farmhouse in the middle of a large olive grove located in a unique corner of Tuscany. It is both near to the Tyrrhenian Sea and close to the Appuan Alps.

The Villa offers five independent apartments each with private outside dining table.

We have refurbished and modernized the property and added a large swimming pool.

The small village of Pozzi where the Villa Maria Doria is located, sits in a privileged geographical position midway between the charming Apuan Alps and the Versilia riviera.

Pozzi is of considerable archaeological importance for remains of a Etruscan settlement, dating from 6th Century B.C., were found here and can be seen in the archaeological museum in Pietrasanta.

Also, during the Renaissance noble Florentine families, including the Medici, chose this area for their summer residence. Local historians think that the Villa Maria Doria was built around 500 years ago as that is the age of the olive trees that surround it.

Over the years the buildings have been re-structured to accommodate contemporary life-styles but bits of history can still be found on the existing buildings.

There are facilities for recreation and activity on the grounds itself, plus, in the surrounding area you will find world class shopping, restaurants offering traditional Tuscan cooking and beach life at Forte dei Marmi and the coast.

Within a short drive you will find major historical sights like: Pietrasanta, Carrara, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano and Volterra. Also available are sporting activities like golf, hiking, biking, and water sports. Vacation life is made easy because whatever you need can be found nearby.

A stay at Villa Maria Doria will be an unforgettable vacation for the whole family. It offers the rare possibility of living in an environment still reminiscent of past times and rhythms now lost in the modern world. There are facilities for recreation and activity on the grounds itself, plus, in the surrounding area you will find world class shopping, restaurants offering traditional Tuscan cooking and beach life at Forte dei Marmi and the coast.

A highly-qualified tourist offer with a long proven tradition.

Comfortable full-comfort bathing establishments in a simple architectural style that blends elegantly with the coastal landscape.

Gorgeous beaches with an average depth of 150 meters.

Gently-sloping bottoms and safe swimming for children and indeed people of all ages.

On the beach ? Quiet, undisturbed relaxation, pleasant, healthful walks along the waterline, get-together and entertainment, water sports, sailing and swimming lessons, water gym in the pool or in the open water ...

A territory with such abounding natural and environmental resources could not but offer exceptional opportunities for healthy living and well being and sports and recreational activities for free time. There are many structures : a dense network of bicycle paths, paths laid out in the pine woods with gym equipment ( and instructions ) at very turn, and many other public and private sports centers.

Many localities have regulation and 6-man soccer fields, a first class eight-line athletics field, gymnasiums, tennis courts, and skating rinks; a riding stable in the La Versiliana park offering rides through the woods an on the beach in the winter; there are trekking itineraries through the pine woods; space for hang-gliding from the heights above the city, and two golf courses ( of which one eighteen hole international level course ).And don't forget the sea, where you can engage in all the water sports, from swimming with fins to windsurf, from water gym to canoeing; in Motrone you'll find the Club Velico di Marina di Pietrasanta which besides caring for and launching tourist boats at the beach landing, organizes sailing regattas and a sailing school.

The Apuan Alps Nature Park

A range of high mountains with steep, rocky peaks typical of alpine landscapes overlooking a wide coastal plain splashed with the blue water of the Tyrrhenian Sea.These are the Apuan Alps in Versilia, a breathtaking view of an area already rich in mediterranean features.

The Versilian coast has a unique characteristic that no other Italian seaside resort can boast : that is to have real mountains in its immediate surroundings. The scenery of the Apuan Alps contains rugged summits and enclose valleys contrasting with charming wood and dells. Amidst chestnut woods are villages, nestling at the foot of steep slopes as well as open green plateaus with streams precipitating sharply to form spectacular cascades and waterfalls. The bold peaks assailed by the marble quarries stretch out toward the sky with their white ravines shining like immense glaciers. Marble, the treasure of the Apuan Alps has always represented a source of work and means of support for the Apuan population. Since the 1700s the Apuan Alps have been known by geologists and naturalists for their particular features and recently they have become a place of growing interest for the public. Geologists have always been attracted by numerous typical phenomena such as natural cavities and caverns in the area, among which the most important is the cavern of Monte Corchia, the deepest and largest in Italy ; on the other hand, naturalists have shown interest for the wide variety of plants and animal species found here and for this reason it is a protect area. The Apennines are like a huge sports arena, ideal for those who enjoy trekking, horse riding, cycling, mountain and downhill biking. But there is more : winter sports are well catered where there is not only traditional skiing but also cross- country and ski touring. Those who are not experienced skiers can still feel the thrill of the snow-capped Apennines by getting some 'ciaspole' or snowshoes. Nordic walking and sky running are another two stimulating healthy pastimes that are becoming increasingly popular. There are also specific trails for those suffering from heart problems. The woodland network of high-altitude paths, the easy trails and the gentle slopes are, in any case, accessible to all walkers and offer excellent physical and mental benefit.
