The house was rebuilt in 2013 and now complements its superb position with views which are staggering from all the rooms. The new house may be special but it's the garden, pool, sea and beach that take centre stage.
The pool is set right at the front of the property and from the loungers you get an uninterrupted view of the beach. Other highlights include the terrace and bedroom balconies where glass balustrades leave you free to appreciate the views.
We are proud of the garden-we have chosen the plants to attract birds and give colour all year round. There are different places to sit and relax and a lawn for the children. The house exterior is clapboard, in a neutral colour, to melt into the garden.
Inside, the house has large sliding doors that downstairs open up to the garden, including doors that actually slide into the walls in the Sun Room so you can enjoy indoor-outdoor living. In the morning don't just pull back the curtains-slide the doors open as well and take time to just lie in bed and enjoy the scene before you.
The interior of The Beach House is calm, contemporary but with great warmth. Oak floors are throughout and encourage you to leave your shoes at the front door and just relax.
With, Annie, the House Manager, on hand to offer you any help you need and the wonderful Julia around 3 times a week to keep the house tidy, we hope to be able to look after you well and ensure your vacation is perfect.
We do get a large volume of requests to stay with us during the Peak Season months so, to be fair to everyone, we prioritise those guests who plan to stay for 7 to 14 nights. But wherever possible we will try to accommodate your specific dates.
And finally, we want to take what we hope will be a very positive move to promote Llandudno and Cape Town during the months of May to August by offering a free bottle of great wine for every night you stay with us. This is a wonderful time of year in The Cape. Not only are flight prices low but restaurants have great value menus and you can actually get into some of the restaurants that are fully booked for months in advance during the Peak Season. And what many people don't realise is that we get the most beautiful clear blue sky days with temperatures regularly above 20C. So please come and join us and let us impress you the excellent wines offered here in the Western Cape.
I grew up in Llandudno so have lived here for more years than I care to remember (or disclose!)
In my 20's I packed my bags and travelled to Europe, the States and Canada. Working extensively overseas broadened my outlook enormously and has subsequently helped me to appreciate the needs of our guests who arrive from all over the world.
But, even when working abroad, I always knew that the wonderful people and beauty of South Africa was going to draw me back one day. And when I did return, there was only one place to live and that was Llandudno.
Today my role is House Manager for The Beach House and I have a small team consisting of Julia and David who help with keeping the house and garden clean and tidy.
I have my own completely separate apartment below the main house and I'm on hand not just to welcome you but to answer any queries you may have which might be on good restaurants in the area, activities, vineyards to visit and so on. But don't worry, if you have your own plans and know the area I won't be interfering in your holiday.
It is rare to find somewhere as beautiful as the position of The Beach House in Cape Town and wonderful to be able to stay in a house that fits well with such a special place. I get to wake up to the view every day but hope the photos show a little of what you can expect. Do contact me if I can answer any of your additional questions.
Annie Rankin purchased this house in 2001
I have lived in an apartment below the main house for more than 20 years but have known Jane and David who own the house for over 15 years ago. I thought I would leave 'why the property' to them:
'Back in 2001, we parked the car outside a rather ordinary looking house in Llandudno. We were having a very quick look at some properties that might be suitable for us before we had to fly home.
The Estate Agent apologized profusely for the house and dragged back the sliding door (with some difficulty) to let us in to the garden. And that was when the views hit us. We hadn't realized that the house and garden was perched on top of giant granite boulders looking down the length of the beach towards the iconic Llandudno rocks...and the ocean just seemed huge!
A few months later the house was ours and we set about extensive renovations.
For the next 10 years The Beach House was our family holiday home and then let to guests for the rest of the year. Many of our guests returned to the house year after year and became firm friends of Annie to be welcomed back many times.
But after 10 years the old house was struggling and was going to need a significant rebuild. Although difficult, in 2012 we decided take down the house and build a new property. The new house would have two levels and would be built to maximize the views in a way that old property never could.
In October 2013 the new house was finished and the end result was worth every single Rand. We loved it and returning home after the first visit was very difficult.
It's very difficult to do full justice to the house, garden and views on HomeAway but we hope we can give you a flavour here. If you do have other questions please do ask Annie'.
We hope you have the chance to come and stay and experience what we did all those years ago.
The views, the garden and the house are great but our little extra secret is the team who are on hand to make sure you are looked after. As House Manager, I hope I can help make sure your vacation takes in the best of Cape Town. You will also meet Julia, a firm favourite with guests, who has worked in the house for over 10 years, and is very much a part of our family. Julia cleans, washes and irons; in fact, there isn't much that Julia doesn't do in her three visits each week. And finally, we have David who once a week keeps the garden looking great.
This home was not just as described...it was even better! It was great for ourselves and the other couples we were traveling with as each of us had our own en suite bedroom, and all the bedrooms have gorgeous views. There is plenty of space for families and friends to spread out and enjoy both the inside and the outdoor spaces. The pool is lovely and the beach is within walking distance.
The kitchen was stocked with just about everything you could need. The house was immaculate and the manager, who lives on site, was always happy to make restaurant recommendations or answer questions about the property or site seeing.
There are plenty of great restaurants in the area, and we were easily able to get to all the places we wanted to visit...Stellenbosch, Cape Point, Somerset West, the V&A Waterfront, etc.
I would highly recommend this property to anyone who is visiting Cape Town!
We spent two weeks in the Cape Town area from Toronto, and the six days spent at the Beach House was the highlight. What an amazing place! The views are spectacular, the house is stunning, and house manager Annie is absolutely lovely. Hard to believe, but the place is even better in person than it shows in the pictures. A perfect place to relax - on the terrace, in the pool, or at the beach below - and to use a base for day trips to Cape Point, or to pop into Cape Town and take advantage of the great restaurants the city and area has to offer. We hope to return soon - if it just wasn't so far from home!
We stayed here for a week in early April 2015.
The view from the house was amazing and although you are in a very exclusive area of Cape Town, the orientation of the house ensures privacy and made you feel as though the view was all your own to enjoy.
The interior of the house is finished to an exceptionally high standard with the outstanding feature being the Sun Room and the main living area which can be opened up fully onto the outside decking so that you have a massive open air space to take in the sun and scenery.
Annie and Julia were great and ensured that our break was kept stress free and the house maintained in tip top condition. It then became an easy option to spend the day challenging yourself swimming against the jet flow in the pool or simply see how many dolphins you could see leaping in the bay (apparently the whales are more common September to November) whilst indulging in something long, cold and refreshing from the comfort of the loungers.
For entertainment and activities, it’s just a short walk down to the beach and Hout Bay and Camps Bay are in easy striking distance for restaurants and people watching. Cape Town itself is a short drive if you feel the need to tick the touristy things off your to-do list.
The house and surrounding area was a great experience, treat yourself you won’t be disappointed, but please not on the dates I next want to visit !
We stayed in the house during September, when the weather can always be a bit mixed, but still had a good holiday. This was our first visit since the redevelopment - what an incredible change from the previous single level house. The house overlooks the Llandudno beach, which is popular with surfers, and up to the mountains. While the views from ground level have always been terrific those from the bedrooms on the first floor, with their huge picture windows, are amazing. The present good exchange rates made the house excellent value. We particularly liked the garden and the bird life. It was a shame that Smudge, one of Annie's cats, can't get up to the house any more from her flat below! Nothing was too much trouble for Annie, who looks after the house and solves any problems, or Julia, who does everything to keep the house neat and tidy. We look forward to returning next year to this top quality accommodation.
Our whole stay at the Beach House was fantastic!!! The house has a great design, a beautiful view and we felt very comfortable. Especially we enjoyed the two spacious living rooms, the sea view from all bed rooms and the sun room including a barbecue grill. In Llandudno we felt absolutely safe and the short distance to the beach was simply perfect. A big thank you to Annie who made the stay stressfree and organized everything perfectly!! Thanks to Julia who is a very kind and helpful person, the house was always spotlessly clean :) We will come back soon!!
This is the perfect Beach House, classically designed to bring the outside in, simple and elegant in every detail, and yet the best thing about the house is Annie the housekeeper, she is a star. Llandudno is only residential so no bars or restaurants, just the sight and sound of the Ocean to put you to sleep and greet you when you wake.
Bit loathed to give the BH such high marks as we want to be able to stay there every year !!
The Llandudno Beach House stands in a special position looking down the length of the beach to the iconic rocks, with the ocean stretching out into the distance. During the season, whales will often come into this small bay but much more frequent visitors are dolphins and seals. The seals in particular like to play in the surf and chase small fish.
The beach is very popular with surfers and Capetonians who love to sit with a drink watching the sun go down.
Off to your right, looking down on the house, is the Twelfth Apostle which lies at end of the Table Mountain range. With a flat top like Table Mountain, it stands at a dramatic 800m and looks stunning as the sun sets and it turns red.
There aren't bars and restaurants in Llandudno (because the local residents have always guarded their privacy) but both can be found in Hout Bay and Camps Bay as well as Cape Town itself. There are many, many restaurants within within a 10-20 minute drive and taxis can be easily ordered.
There is so much do in the local area. We have mentioned the surfing but what about boogie boarding or sea kayaking or diving. There is so much history to take in as well with Robben Island visible from the house. If you prefer wildlife then look out for the Ibis, Drongos and Sunbirds in and around the garden and, of course, we have whales in the area with seals and dolphins. The views from Table Mountain are superb but there are many other spots that are less crowded and the hiking is world class if you are feeling energetic.
We would also highlight day trips from the house. Cape Point is beautiful and, as a National Park, has its indigenous game (not The Big Five but lots of others game) - watch out for the baboons! During the season, Hermanus and De Kelders provide an almost guaranteed opportunity to see whales. Stellenbosch and Franshhoek provide great scenery, food and exquisite wines from numerous local vineyards. Tulbagh takes you back to the time of the earliest settlers.
The golf courses are second to none and we can help with advice.
For thrill seekers think paragliding down to Camps Bay Beach, cage diving with Great White sharks, kloofing, diving with sharks in the Cape Town Aquarium while your family watch on, abseiling off Table Mountain and list goes on.
The restaurants in and around Cape Town are superb and great value. Ask us, when you arrive, for some recommendations.
But the best activity of all when you stay in The Beach House will always be to just sit in the garden or on your bedroom balcony and just gaze out to sea or down the beach-it's just breath taking.
