Our house is called Solas, which in Gaelic means solace, comfort. It is a fantastic 2 bedroom house constructed at the end of 2009, situated beside the shore in the village of Glenelg. Glass screens downstairs with atrium above are a feature of the house and allow wonderful views across the Sound of Sleat and to the Isle of Skye. Ground floor is open plan with living area to one side of the central staircase and dining/kitchen to the other. The luxury bespoke kitchen includes a 5 ring combination gas/electric Lacanche cooker, American fridge freezer with ice/water facilities and dishwasher. There is a separate utility/boot room to the back of the house with washing machine and tumble dryer. The sitting room has a Jotul stove, TV/Freeview/ DVD player and has a good selection of books, local maps and DVDs. Free Wifi. The nearby Glenelg Inn offers lunches and dinners with an interesting and varied menu in both its atmospheric bar and separate dining room, the Way Out West cafe has a selection of delicious homemade cakes and light lunches. There is a local well stocked shop. Horse riding and boat trips available nearby, kayaking in the village of Plockton.

As a family, we fell in love with this house while holidaying in Glenelg. We bought it in 2012 and it is our second home, which we rent out when we are not there. In the summer, we love sitting on the beach and read a book, canoeing in Plockton, going to the cinema in Portree; in the winter holidays, we spend most days near the fire watching the world go by. We love the open plan kitchen/dining room/living room, which brings us together and is great for entertaining.

Glenelg is situated in the West Highlands and is reached over the scenic Mam Ratagan pass just after Shiel Bridge (on the A87 Inverness to Kyle road), or alternatively by ferry during the summer months from south Skye. The house is next to the shore overlooking the Isle of Skye and south to the Sound of Sleat. The Glenelg Inn is a few minutes walk away, as is the local Post Office and well stocked shop. Glenelg became famous after Gavin Maxwell wrote Ring of Bright Water at nearby Sandaig. South of the house, about 30 minutes walk, are the Glenelg Brochs, constructed around 2000 years ago and thought to be occupied by the Picts. The ferry is operational between April and October and a 5 minute crossing will take you to Kylerhea on Skye. The area is great for cycling, canoeing, fishing, horse-riding (20 minutes away) and hill-walking. Boat trips can also be arranged locally.

Notes:
The property was built in 2009 and offers luxury accommodation with stunning views over to Skye. The property benefits from oil fired central heating and also a very efficient Jotul wood burning stove. Downstairs is open plan with large kitchen/dining area separated by the staircase and glass atrium from the sitting room. In the kitchen, the Lacanche cooker offers 5 gas burners, with an optional griddle plate, a gas oven and electric oven with grill; the American-style fridge/freezer has a filtered water dispenser and ice maker; there is a DeLonghi Nescafe' Dolce Gusto coffee machine to make espresso, americano, latte, mocha and cappuccino. A separate laundry/boot room gives direct access to the back garden.

Beautiful peaceful house well located for exploring

We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was very well equipped for the 4 of us. We appreciated the well stocked larder and extras ( salt, pepper, herbs, oil, vinegar, sugar, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, foil, cling film etc). We loved making a coffee( in the Dolce Gusto) then sitting and just looking at the ever changing scenery of the Isle of Skye. The wifi was excellent too.

The cottage was in the perfect location for exploring the Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan, Loch Ness and the "Five Sisters of Kintail". The unique Glenelg ferry is a really fun way to get to the Isle of Skye, we enjoyed it and it is only 5 minutes from the cottage.

The Glenelg pub which is a short walk away made us very welcome and served us excellent food each time we visited.

Our American friends ( from Florida) absolutely loved waking up to the sheep walking past the house.

We appreciated the off-road parking too. All in all a fabulous holiday at a great cottage.

Beautiful cottage overlooking Skye

My husband and I spent a wonderful week in this beautiful cottage to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary.

The open plan layout downstairs lends itself to a great sociable place to spend time. The kitchen is well equipped - including a very well stocked store cupboard of 'essentials'!

The cottage is well placed to make use of the excellent community owned / run ferry over to Skye. If you are lucky (as we were) you may see otters playing near the landing stage! We were also fortunate enough to see a Golden Eagle on the road between Glenelg and Sandaig and a White Tailed Eagle whilst on Skye.

Despite the weather (and the knowledge that the rest of the UK were having an official heatwave) we had a fabulous week in this lovely cottage and would certainly stay here again if we return to the area again.

Lovely house in a charming tiny village, with views that go for miles. No matter the weather, this house will keep you warm, whilst providing everything you need. Would book again in a heartbeat.

Luxury in a peaceful setting

A beautiful newish contemporary cottage with great use of natural materials balancing modern touches. It has great views across to Skye in the beautiful, remote and peaceful village of Glenelg. The local Glenelg Inn is an easy walk and a great welcome. The walks and scenery were stunning, topped off with a trip to Corran where we watched an otter and dolphins hunting, amazing!
