Enjoy sunbathing and the beautiful sunsets on the deck attached to the Gazebo. Watch sailboats, fishing and cargo ships pass right outside your window. The cottage, the gazebo and the setting make this a special and private retreat. The cottage is within walking distance of the most photographed lighthouse in New Brunswick and connected by bridge to the US mainland at Lubec, Maine. Head Harbor Wharf is within walking distance for Whale Watch and fishing trips as well as to watch the local fisherman at work. This cute house is fully furnished as a vacation home.

It is located on beautiful Campobello Island where the beloved summer home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt is open as a museum and sits surrounded by stunningly beautiful hiking trails and interesting beaches in the Roosevelt International Park. The Park offers a delightful and infromative "Tea with Eleanor" (Roosevelt) in one of the historic large cottages on the Park grounds. Campobello Island is connected by bridge to the US mainland at Lubec, Maine 04652 zip code.

The property has a flat lot so that a car can pull up to the entrance of the house, also the lawn is overlooking the ocean and is appropriate for tents for camping.

For overflow crowds, there is an additional quaint private cottage next door that sleeps 2-3 with a beautiful oceanfront view and large deck.

Have a large family? Rent the Whale of a View and the Sea Urchin next door! Both cottages are private and located on their own private 3 acres. They are connected by a trail along the shore through the woods. Also available for rental is a charming two-room cabin nestled in the woods between the Sea Urchin and the Whale of a View.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about our stay at Whale of a View. The location is exceptionally peaceful.

We found the cottage to be very comfortable and clean. It was stocked with everything one could need. The view is amazing. Our children loved watching the whales, seals and eagles. We feel very fortunate that the Haires make this wonderful property available for rent.

Owner's Response: We so enjoyed having James and his wife at the Whale of a View Cottage. They treated it as if it was their own and left the cottage in great condition. We would love to have them return.

A soul-refreshing escape from it all

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Whale of A View with a friend for the 2nd week in June 2017. Booking was easy - the owners, Dennis & Margaret, were so responsive and helpful.

I'm so glad we were able to stay here. We were too early for any whales (although Slice and another minke were spotted in and around the area that week!) but our stay was worth-while nonetheless. We appreciated that tourist season wasn't in full swing on Campobello, so in many ways, it felt like we had the island to ourselves. We spent hours enjoying the panoramic view from the screened in porch, though my wife especially loved going down to the Eagle's Nest to watch the seals and porpoises. A couple rabbits hung around the entire time. Our friend, something of an amateur birder, had a great time tracking all the different kinds that passed by every day - we even saw a bald eagle swoop by one afternoon! My favorite thing to do was to head out to the Head Harbor lighthouse (just a mile up the road) in the mornings to watch the sun rise. Absolutely beautiful views, and just so serene, with little but the occasional seal, porpoise, gulls, and fishing boats headed out for company....

We also very much enjoyed the Natural Areas of the Campobello International Park. The view from Liberty Point is just breathtaking. Tea with Eleanor and a tour of the Roosevelt Cottage are a fun enough diversion if you're looking for something lowkey to do one day.

We spent almost all of our time on the Island or in the cottage (it's so comfortable and the view is so great, you'll rarely want to leave), but we did also do a day trip to St. Andrews (painless even by car, since the ferries weren't running yet!).

We would absolutely love to come back some day.

Practical stuff: Bring binoculars! The grocery options on the Island are helpful in a pinch (like when we arrived late on a Sunday), but limited and relatively expensive considering the US is a bridge away. I'd recommend that you stop at the Hannaford in Machias (or the IGA in Lubec if it's still open) and stock up before crossing over. When we arrived, the cottage had a decently stocked kitchen in terms of dishes and cookware, salt, pepper, sugar substitutes, and some coffee filters. Make sure to bring your coffee, tea, and any other AM foodstuffs you might be needing; Campobello has only one breakfast spot option! We were nervous about bringing groceries thru customs (esp dairy & produce), but they only cared about potted plants and alcohol.

Owner's Response: We so enjoyed having Myriem and her family at the Whale of a View Cottage. Many folks say the actual cottage is better than the photos. We like that as we rarely ever have had a disappointed guest after 30 years renting the 4 separate and private cottages. We would love to have Myriem and her family return. Thank you so much for such a nice review and taking the time to submit it. Fondly, Dennis & Margaret

Paradise on Campobello

  • 5 of 5

It's hard to write a short review when there is so much to say. We had been to Campobello maybe 15 years ago as a short day trip while vacationing in Lubec. We decided it would be fun to go back and spend our 2015 vacation actually staying on Campobello. We looked at several rentals and it was the description, and photos of 'Whale of a View' that sold us on this property. Our concern was that there was no rental contract however, after speaking with Dennis on the phone, I was very confident that we made the correct choice. He respectfully answered my questions and concerns, all of which turned out to be non-issues. By the end of the two weeks we realized that everyone we met on Campobello knew and spoke highly of the Haire's so you should have no concerns about renting any of their properties. I had the pleasure of personally meeting Dennis, Margaret and their staff while we were there. They are all nice friendly honest people as were all the residents of the Island.

We felt right at home as soon as we arrived and walked through the door and saw that the housekeeper left some inside lights on for us. Nice touch. The house has everything you can possibly ask for in a rental and is very clean, well maintained and nicely decorated in a whale/nautical theme. Views from the property are incredible.

We rented the house for two weeks. I highly recommend people looking at this property to do the same. The first week goes by so fast. You need a second week to appreciate all that the house, Campobello Island, and surrounding areas have to offer. Eagles, Osprey and gulls fly very close to the house all day long. I only saw one whale the first week but during week two we saw multiple whale sightings every day, some very close to our shore. Porpoises also provided daily entertainment and a few seals were seen as well. Schools of herring and sardines churned the coastline waters all day. It is peaceful just watching the formations they make as they swim around avoiding larger fish. I chose "Paradise on Campobello" as the title of this review because it is truly that! If you need active nightlife, amusement parks, pristine sandy beaches, and fancy hotels, then Campobello is probably not for you. But if you are looking for solitude, if you love the outdoors, hikes, nature, history, and wildlife and want to return home refreshed and not exhausted, then Campobello and specifically this property will provide all that and more.

Whale of a View Cottage - The Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Booking our stay at Whale of a View cottage was extremely easy, and the owner, Dennis Haire, is very friendly and easy to talk to. It is clear he takes great pride in his properties as the cottage and surrounding property we booked was very cosy, clean, and well organized. The view of the water from the cottage is spectacular; even the view from our bedroom window was unique and memorable. Learning about Campobello Island’s history from the numerous books in the cottage was a pleasant way to relax in the evening. There is also a private gazebo that overlooks the water and it is a perfect place to read and enjoy watching the tides. The Head Harbour Lighthouse is located very close by and it is one of the great sites on the Island. My wife and I both had a wonderful four-evening stay at Whale of a View cottage, and our 20 month-old son had even more fun than we did. Most people that visit the island make the mistake of only seeing the Roosevelt cottage and then immediately leaving; however, the island and its surroundings have much to offer and staying a number of nights is worth the experience. My wife and I agreed that we will definitely return again soon.

Couldn't have asked for better

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have stayed on Campobello for several years but never at any of the Haires properties and this stay was by far the best! Dennis responded quickly to our emails and answered all our questions about our stay. On our arrival we found the cottage to be as described and more. It was very clean and so well stocked! Nothing was missing! The view is a"whale of a view". The pictures don't do it justice! We spent many hours enjoying the magnificent view! The cottage had everything, from games to blankets to curl up in. We appreciated all the seaglass books and historical books. It was a bit cool during our stay but we were snug at the cottage. We were able to see the other two properties and in the future we will definitely rent one of them! You won't go wrong renting from Dennis. It was a real pleasure working with them and we thank him for sharing this slice of heaven with us! We will return! You will love watching the seals, porpoise,Eagles and I am sure whales in season!

Owner's Response: CAMPOBELLO ISLAND OCEANFRONT COTTAGES: WHALE OF A VIEW COTTAGE, SEA URCHIN COTTAGE & PERIWINKLE COTTAGE. Margaret and I as well as the cleaning staff of Debra and Sylvia are always happy to know our guests had a wonderful time on Campobello as well as at our cottages. We are thankful the pictures don't do the cottages and views justice as it gives the guest more than they were expecting when they arrive. Nancy and her husband were great guests and are welcome to return when in the area again. I always say if they like it in the month of April they will love it from June to October!
