On the shores of Kealakekua Bay, a Protected Marine Conservation area, is an enchanting, 3 bedroom/3 bath, water front house called the Dolphin Retreat. This open and airy private home has all the amenities one would desire for a tropical vacation. The property is surrounded by fragrant Plumeria Trees and Coco Palms and includes a sun deck, hot tub and outdoor shower. You can enjoy your dinners watching the famous Kona Sunsets on the spacious lanai, which can seat 8 comfortably. The home has wireless Internet service, High Definition TV and an iPod compatible entertainment system. Kayaks for exploring the Bay are included as well.
It is an unusual morning when the dolphins aren’t frolicking with swimmers and kayakers in the crystal clear waters directly off our ocean front deck. The best snorkeling in Hawaii is found here at Kealakekua Bay. Turtles make their way along the shore to rest, while stunning arrays of tropical fish accentuate the pristine coral reefs. The Dolphin Retreat offers direct access to the Bay for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking.
You will not soon forget your stay at Dolphin Retreat.
This was my first trip to the Big Island. Staying here was amazing. Swimming with the dolphins was unforgettable. Plus, seeing the lava flow into the ocean at night, I felt like I was in a National Geographic special. Love this place. Thanks a million.
This beautiful home is spacious, well-appointed and carefully maintained. The location is amazing, right on the water with gorgeous sunset views! The property is large and very peaceful with beautiful foliage. The jacuzzi and outdoor lava rock shower make it a true paradise. I loved drifting to sleep each night to the sound of the waves.
Included in the rental was access to kayaks and the boat launch located just two houses away. We had such an amazing time kayaking out to the spinner dolphins each morning and hopping in for the most exceptional experience! The snorkeling at the monument is world class. Also just 4 miles down the road is The City of Refuge "two step" which had great snorkeling as well.
Our family ranged from our little kids (age 3 & 5), to our teenagers (15 & 18) and my in-laws in their 70's. Everyone had a great time. There is truly something for everyone here.
We will definitely be visiting the Dolphin Retreat again as soon as we can. There is something magical about this place!
Our stay was good but I would like to submit some comments to assist future renters as these are things I didn't think of but would have been good to know before making a rental decision. Please note that nothing was misrepresented to us and this is not a complaint. The photos posted are very accurate. The lanai is spacious and the home has an awesome ocean/bay view and a really nice deck for sunning next to the water. The kitchen was well appointed and clean.
The first and 2nd floors are completely separate (downstairs is like an apt) meaning there is no inside staircase or any way to gain access from the 1st floor to the 2nd without exiting to the exterior of the home & using the side stairs to access via the lanai doors on the front of the home. To access the lanai (upstairs deck overlooking ocean)from the downstairs you have to go up the exterior stairs through the 2nd level of the home. The 2nd floor is cool but odd in that the living/kitchen areas have no glass windows or bug screens - just non locking wood lanai style sliding slatted doors that open up to the outside. There is an exterior door on the upper deck that can be locked to prevent access to the upper level via the stairs. If my husband had not been travelling with us girls we probably would not have felt comfortable because of the lack of locking windows/doors & bug screens in the main upstairs living areas. Other than the locking door on the outside upper deck there is nothing to prevent someone from gaining access to the home if they found a way to climb onto the decks. We were uncomfortable leaving all our electronics in the home while we travelled about because of this. When the living room area doors are closed you cannot see out (no windows or screens ) so little natural light and no ocean views when doors are closed. The road the home is on is extremely narrow and heavily travelled by locals and tourists on foot, bike and car as there is a state beach at the end of the street. There is a rock privacy wall around the front yard. Great for privacy - bad for maneuvering a vehicle unless it's a small car with a good turning radius. Difficult to maneuver our full size Yukon truck due to the busy narrow street and close rock walls on each side of the driveway. The closest restaurant and grocery store is several miles away - up the winding road to the main hwy. My only complaint was the living room furniture. It is hard as a rock - not at all comfortable.
Staying at the Dolphin Retreat was truly a special time in paradise. The lovely sunsets and calming sounds of splashing waves were an added treat. Being located right on Kealakekua Bay, with complimentary kayaks, allowed daily opportunities to swim with the dolphins and snorkel at Captain Cook's Monument. The spacious house with its large, grassy backyard facing the bay was perfect. The Dolphin Retreat was everything we had hoped for in Hawaii and more. The only negative part of our vacation was having to leave! We will definitely be back and already miss this wonderful vacation home.
My wife had just retired after 36 years in an incredibly stressful job. We agreed, whatever she wanted for her retirement trip. My job was to plan the transportation, first class seats. Her job was to plan where we would stay. First Class hardly does this place justice. We had a few snafus upon arrival, but each concern was immediately and professionally dealt with along with a call from the owner to make sure we were happy. We had friends and family join us for a few days - to a week from the Mainland, while at the same time having some quiet nights alone. We were blessed with spending 14 nights at this wonderful home. From snorkeling to sightseeing, to just hanging around the house, the time was great. My bride is sitting out on the front lawn as I type this. She is wishing she could stay another week. If you want the night life, head north to Kona. If you want the good life, stay here.
We spent 8 glorious days at the Dolphin Retreat in April. It is everything and more that we thought it would be!! The dolphins arrived each morning in the bay, the water is blue and clear, the sunsets are perfection! We kayaked to the Captain Cook Monument and snorkeled the waters there. Some of the best snorkeling ever. The house is beautiful, private, and a great place for relaxing and enjoying. We had dinners on the Lanai and watched the sunset. We also made the trip to Volcano National Park, should not be missed, snorkeled at Two Step, saw tons of beautiful fish, sea turtles, and swam with the dolphins in the bay. This is a beautiful property where you can create memories your family will never forget!!!
We are currently at the Dolphin Retreat and leave in two days.
This house is perfect for families, 2 couples or anyone who loves the ocean.
In our case, the grandparents are upstairs in one room, the aunt in another and then our family with two small children are downstairs.
The pictures do not do justice. The beach to swim with dolphins is about 1 block away. The kayak launch is next door. We played catch in the backyard and ate lunch on the grass. We (including our 6 year old) snorkled with the dolphins. What an adventure! Down the road we swam with turtles and played on a rocky beach.
The kitchen is perfectly stocked and we ate dinner each night with an amazing view.
I cannot say enough great things about this home. I hope you have as much fun as we did.
