Space 968 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

6 bed rural retreat, fantastic mountain views, Spains largest river and beaches

The perfect place for a peaceful holiday away from the busy costas but within easy reach of lovely beaches. Our light and airy cottage has an open plan living space with a kitchen area, dining table and chairs and a sofa bed. The double bedroom with luxury mattresses and pillows for a great night's sleep, opens out onto a tranquil, flower filled, traditional courtyard and you can lie in bed and gaze at the pool and views beyond. There is another bedroom with twin beds, (new, luxury mattresses) which can be pushed together into a double. The large, sparkly blue and white bathroom has loo, basin and shower. Outside you have a private and very pretty BBQ and eating area and endless space to roam throughout the many acres of garden. This is such a special place, not only in the summer, but spring offers fantastic walking and wild flowers and autumn wild mushrooms, cycling, fishing (yes, the mighty river Ebro is 5 mins up the road) sightseeing and of course relaxing. Eat fabulous local food and enjoy fresh eggs from the caretaker's chickens and just lie beside the stunning swimming pool (May-Nov) with a good book (may 1st-end sept and you may be sharing with family in the main house). There is a shared games room with pool table for your further amusement. You won't want to leave but if you do there is plenty to do!

As most of you will arrive on Saturday we are very happy to do a shop for you if you want to - just send us a list.

After renovations and up-grades throughout, we are renting our own house next door for some weeks of the year. If you wish to rent the 2 together (or just want a nose at some more photos) please see Casa Pio, property number 453567. Please bear in mind that the pool and games room may be shared with other paying guests or family sometimes.

A little further up the mountain track (5 minutes drive) is a yoga retreat, and if you wish to start your day at this fantastic place our guests are welcome to join in the morning yoga sessions. Massage is also offered at this relaxing oasis.

I cannot stress how lovely this area is in the spring and the autumn........warm, blue skies perfect for walking and exploring the surroundings. In April and may it is green and beautiful with abundant wildflowers, birds, wild asparagus and the beaches are empty. In September, October and often into November we have a second spring where the green returns and everything comes back to life after the intense summer heat. The end of October brings with it cool misty mornings (great for the wild fungi) mostly giving way to warm sunny days. Of course without rain none of this could be and I would be lying if I said there was no rain, but invariably it doesn’t last long and blue skies are never far away. There is a wood burning stove to keep you toasty and warm if the evenings are cooler.

Our lovely swimming pool is unheated and therefore only suitable for use between 1st May and the end of September.

About Sue Barnes

About Sue and David Barnes

Sue and David live near Windsor in the UK and bought this lovely house in October 2013 as a place to retreat to from their hectic work life.

They both own and run a successful flower business, which creates wonderful displays for parties and weddings in London and the SE of England.

It’s a hectic business, probably the only business of its type in England! It is demanding creatively and logistically, but hugely rewarding as most of the 1000+ parties they decorate each year are held in some of the most well known buildings in the country. Plus Sue look after 100-150 Brides on their wedding days- quite a responsibility!

Finding a bolt hole away from it all, so they could recharge our batteries, seemed like an attractive proposition!

Sue Barnes purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Sue Barnes chose Rasquera

Why we chose this spot

When we were looking for a special place to call our own in Spain we saw many properties, one of which was Casa Pio. We fell instantly in love with it! It is such a special place.

The previous owners, who must take the credit for so much of the house design, had done a brilliant job of rebuilding an almost derelict farmhouse. They poured their soul into it, and we are incredibly fortunate to now own it.

We’ve given it a lick of paint, new beds, mattresses, and linen and added other personal comfort touches.

We love the location, the land around the house and the house itself. Our neighbours are pretty wonderful too, and very helpful.

This casita (cottage) is built facing south and is joined to the main house by a gorgeous courtyard and a single story games room, both of which are there for you too.

You have your own driveway and entrance and you are completely separate, self contained and secluded from the main house.

You look out onto woods and in the west there is a magnificent mountain range. There are some magical walks straight from the door around the hills which time forgot, where you can wonder why and who built the little, long disused terraces high up in the side of the hills. The peace and stillness is only broken by the occasional half-hearted barking of a dog or two as you walk past their properties.

Drive inland for 5 minutes and you’ll arrive in our nearest village Rasquera, which overlooks the Ebro river- the longest river in Spain. It is stunning with huge catfish you can often see. Here you can go fishing or kayaking, and on the other bank perched on the side of a cliff, is a majestic ancient castle built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. You can see for miles. The valley is one of the market gardens of Cataluña.

Head the other way to the coast and the little beaches and coves around El Perello can be found only 20 minutes away. Some little beaches have friendly cafes- perfect after a hard day on the beach!

What makes this cottage unique

Your cottage sits quietly near a wide and well maintained track, which brings you only 300 meters from the nearest tarmac road. It’s within 8 hectares of our land, with olives, almonds, carobs and Mediterranean pines. The land is terraced in wide sweeps around a central baranc (valley cut in the ice-age) and there is masses to explore.

This just simply is a very lovely place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a very relaxing stay in the Casita. Extremely well equipped and able to accommodate 6 people, it has a charming courtyard where we would sit in the early morning, taking in the magnificent view, or in the evening listening to the cicadas.

The games room provided a lot of fun for children and adults alike and the pool was a delight with its quirky shower in the tree. Well placed for the glorious sandy beaches and little towns with their markets, this is a lovely place to spend a holiday.

Lovely private rural property.

  • 4 of 5

This was a great place to end our trip in Spain. It is a lovely quiet casita with great views and access to the shared pool and gardens. Paul met us with a bottle of wine, fruit, and a delicious Spanish tortilla made by his mother-in-law. We went for long walks and enjoyed beautiful sunsets. Close to many beaches and towns to explore.

Owner's Response: Hi Tim, So glad you were able to end your trip at the casita and that you enjoyed your stay. It is the most tranquil place and the garden and views make you just stop, breathe deeply and relax. Paul is brilliant and his mother-in-law's tortilla even better!!! The walks from the door are great and the sunsets are incredible - hope you made it down to the Ebre and the little coves along the coast? Come back and see us again soon and have a safe journey back home! Sue

A gorgeous house in a stunning setting

  • 5 of 5

We've just had a wonderful week at Casita Pio. We were met at the property by Paul and his wife, who had left us a very generous welcoming package, including a delicious freshly-made tortilla - thanks due to Paul's mother-in-law, I think! Paul was always available to answer any queries, as were the owners ahead of our visit.

The house was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated, and was perfect for our family, and the location is super-peaceful. It felt completely secluded and private, but only 20 minutes' drive from the coast. We made good use of the lovely pool with its stunning mountain views and I loved the garden, which was full of beautiful plants and trees.

We enjoyed visiting the local area, which was very peaceful away from the busy coastal towns. Particular highlights for us were a visit to Miravet via the wonderful 2-car ferry and a trip to the thermal springs at Fontcalda. We took the stunning but road in (if you have high blood pressure, you might be advised to take the other route in, via the via verde road).

Owner's Response: Hi Alison, so pleased that you had a great holiday and that you loved the house, pool, gardens and mountains. It is such a great place to escape to but, when you want a bit of excitement, it's just around the corner and easy to reach. Needless to say, come back and see us soon when there will be the same warm welcome awaiting you......and another tortilla! You sound like you made a good start on everything the local area has to offer but there is oh so much more! Thank you, again, for your kind words, it means a lot.

Possibly the most beautiful place I have stayed

  • 5 of 5

This is a truely special place. It has an atmosphere that is both calming and exciting because everyday you wake up to the most stunning views and come the evening dazzling sunsets. Sitting poolside you look across the mountains and watch the swallows dive into the water-it is really magic! The casita is surrounded by outcrops of wildflowers and fauna that are bursting with colour. If you can book this place I would! I'll be returning in 2017 for sure.

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing week. The house and gardens are so beautiful and the location is breathtaking.

We took our 18 month old girl away for her first holiday abroad and he absolutely loved it too! The pool, swing and huge gardens were perfect for her to explore.

The location of the house is ideal - secluded so that you have complete peace but only 15 min drive to multiple beaches and beautiful little towns.

David and Sue happened to be at the main house while we were there and they made our stay even more perfect. They gave us lots of advice and we shared a few drinks with them in the garden one evening but at no point did we feel crowded.

I can't recommend the property enough, we are already looking at dates for the next time we can go!

Owner's Response: we loved having you there and watching you all relax more and more as the days went by. Loved hearing the burble of a little voice and watching Edie in the pool with the house martins dipping in and out as she swam (well, drowned in the right direction!) - heaven. Thank you for your kind words and come back and see us soon...a warm welcome awaits and so glad you had such a good time. I will always remember you saying "I didn't realise it was actually possible to relax on holiday with an eighteen month old baby" - just brilliant!

Perfect holiday cottage in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a week in the lovely little holiday cottage Casita Pio. The location is stunning with views of the nearby mountains and excellent walks straight from the backdoor.

The cottage is well equipped, spotless and comfortable. It is a really peaceful place where you can get away from it all and relax.

Sue & David were always helpful with information before we left and the local caretaker Paul was just as friendly & helpful.

We love this area, particularly exploring in the mountains & hills and would definitely recommend a stay here.

The coastline 20 mins drive from us has been happily missed by mass tourism. There are many small beaches and coves and it is easy to find a quite one even in the height of summer. The Ebro valley played an important role in the Spanish civil war and there are many castles, ruined villages and museums around to testify to its past.

Rasquera is a small agricultural village, old men chat in the shade of the trees in the square and horses and carts are still used. There are however, a range of shops to provide you with the basics if you don't want to venture out of this lovely valley. El Perello, 10 mins drive offers more shops and a lively Saturday market.

The Catalans love their fiesta and in the summer especially you are never far from one. The Oyster festival is in May at the nearby coast and catch Rasqueras in the first week in Aug when the village goes into party mode and firework wielding devils chase old and young through the streets and music goes on till early in the morning. That's not all- most months there is a fiesta!

Here you have it all mountains, river and sea!
