Sunny Bank Mill Cottages
This 300 year-old traditional stone watermill has been cleverly converted into three individual and attractive cottage-style apartments. In an idyllic riverside setting beside tumbling Torver Beck, each of the three apartments (Dipper, Wren and Robin) are full of character and retain many original features such as exposed stone walls and beams, whilst ensuring comfort and warmth after the day's activities.
Plenty of off-road parking space in the enclosed car-park. A grassy lane alongside the beck leads to a large wooded field (sheep-free - a haven for dogs) and down to the secluded lakeshore.
If you love the tranquil beauty of the lakes, and find yourself drawn to the pretty becks and peaceful waterfronts, this is the perfect holiday destination for you.
Situated on the quiet western shore of Coniston Water, not far from Peel Island ('Wildcat Island' of Swallows and Amazons fame), and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Sunny Bank Mill boasts private lake frontage and has its own jetty where you can launch your own boat or just sit and enjoy the scenery.
The three cosy apartments (Dipper, Robin and Wren) sleep 4, 4 and 2 respectively. Thick stone walls and individual layouts give each its own quirky character. Furnished to a high standard they are equipped with everything you will need to enjoy your holiday.
Whether you like to sit and admire stunning views, or would rather get out and explore by foot, bicycle, sail or paddle, these cottages make an ideal holiday base for a family, or a romantic getaway for 2, any time of the year.

Perfect location, especially for our dog, private field leading to the lake, however not so perfect for us humans, bedding and towels needed replacing, half a loo roll, watered down washing up liquid, chipped plates, very disappointed, came home early.
Thank you for your review. I'm so sorry that 2 of the plates were chipped and that some other supplies were not brilliant quality. I went in on Saturday and have completely renewed all the crockery, glasses, cutlery and bedding - now sparkling new! There are usually 2 full loo rolls so I don't know what happened there, and there are plentiful supplies of washing-up liquid, bin bags, soap etc in the laundry for guests to help themselves.
Wren's being decorated next week throughout, and new furniture is on order, so I'm confident that future guests will have a much improved experience.
Great location, interior of cottage a bit tired
The location of the cottage is fantastic, and walking down to the lake each morning was wonderful, however we found the bed very uncomfortable and in the end came home a day early, the interior of the cottage was a bit tired and could do with a make over, the owner was very helpful, we were just a bit disappointed
Thank you for your frank review. I was mortified to hear after your stay that you had trouble sleeping, and have now already purchased a new mattress, which will be delivered next week (and in the meantime I've put a topper on), to try and ensure no one else has the same issue.
As for the cottage being 'tired', Wren is actually due for a major refresh as soon as I can get the decorator in - probably early October. Last year the focus was on a brand new kitchen and living area in Dipper, new sofas in all the cottages, and major improvements to the car park and exterior darinage.
I do hope you might come back next year and allow me the chance to give you a better experience.
Lovely little cottage
A small and basic but very clean cottage with everything you’d need as a base to explore the amazing countryside around it and access to the most amazing lakeside field and beach with jetty, shared with a few other holiday homes. Wren is in a wonderful location, with a footpath into Coniston along the lakeside almost on the doorstep. The owners bend over backwards to make sure everything is right and I’d certainly return. Recommend breakfast at the Herdwick cafe, and there’s an excellent Indian takeaway/ restaurant in Coniston.
Thank you for your great review. So glad you enjoyed your stay in Wren, and hope you'll be back soon!
A wonderful discovery
Great location, you can escape from the hustle & bustle of August in the Lake District to the beauty & quiet of Coniston Water, enjoy your private beach, canoe to 'Wildcat' island, walk the peaceful lakeside. Yet all of this in close proximity to a fantastic pub & deli. Wren was comfortable, clean and wonderfully situated. Highly recommended, we will return!
Thanks for a great review. So glad you had such a good time in Wren, and hope you'll be back soon.
A fantastic location
A very nice property for a weekend away from it all.
The absolute best place to meet the Lake District
Wren cottage was my home for two weeks, without a car in a somewhat remote location. Everything was perfect. The cottage is very old, part of an old mill, and has all the cottage character but with a very modern complete bathroom and excellent kitchen. The owner takes great care to see that all is in order and immaculately clean. It is a very beautiful short walk on the property to the shores of Coniston Water and the gardens around the house are lovely, including the neighboring sheep herd.
The local bus stops near the door but one should walk the mile to Trover to get the feel of the countryside and for an excellent meal with good food and friendly people at Wilson's pub. The absolute highlight was the two days I spent riding from South to North throughout the park with Bluebird Tours. Run by a local couple from Coniston, the tours are in a comfortable small van and are very personalized to what holds the guests interest. It was a pleasure to see and do so much with Harry and Jeanine and still have welcoming Wren Cottage waiting each night. Sleeping to the sound of the beck is very satisfying and Tesco will deliver groceries.
I rent holiday stays through VRBO frequently and this property deserves the top rating.
Sunny Bank lies at the heart of England’s beautiful Lake District National Park. Here one can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside so beloved by Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome (to name but a few) and yet be within easy reach of charming villages and towns with all the attractions they have to offer. 4 miles from Coniston, a small but busy typical Lakeland town, and just three-quarters of a mile from Torver, where there is an excellent pub. Popular tourist centres such as Ambleside, Grasmere and Hawkshead are about half an hour away by car. Sunny Bank is an ideal location for mountain walking, boating, swimming, sailing and other water-based activities. Bring your own boat or hire our canadian canoes.
