Hale Mahina, meaning house of the moon, is conveniently located about two miles south past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Volcano Golf Course and Country Club Division. It is nestled among the Ohia trees in one of the worlds most beautiful forests. Enjoy the crisp mountain air at the crest of the sunny side of Volcano.
This cozy 2 bedroom, 2 bath home is built in the Plantation Cottage style with an open floor plan.
Rooms are large, comfortable and clean, and our fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook in. Area farmers markets daily in Hilo and Sundays Open Market at Volcano offer produce at its best along with island crafts. Think fresh papaya every morning. The Volcano Winery is 539 steps away from the house where you can view the vineyards and enjoy wine tastings. If you choose not to cook in, Volcano Village has several restaurants serving lunch and dinner and there are also two small country grocery stores. ATM's are available here.
The Volcano Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole course in the view of Mauna Loa (13,680') with the clubhouse restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a visitors center to guide you through the vastness of this incredible National Park. Daily volcano activity is available here for day and night viewing. Tour by car or walk/hike the miles of trails while hearing the songs of the native forest birds. You will learn about our local active Volcano, Kilauea at Jagger Museum.
Sea Mountain Golf Course and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where you might see Green sea turtles, is a beautiful 35 minute drive. Hilo is a 45 minute drive where you will find waterfalls, shopping, beaches and Botanical Gardens.
The area also has several exceptional art galleries which shouldn't be missed.
As cocktail hour approaches, watch from your lanai as the sun sets behind Mauna Loa, while the colorful neighborhood kalij pheasants scurry to their night time nests. As the cool night air descends upon the village, snuggle up to the warmth of the gas log fire place. Do venture out after dark to see the stars on our back deck or take a hike in the park to see the latest lava activity. You certainly won't be disappointed.
Frank is originally from Hilo Hawaii and Cheryl from Minnesota. We purchased our home in Volcano 2007 and plan to use it as a retirement retreat in the future. We love the solitude of the area.
Cheryl Nathaniel purchased this house in 2007
Frank and I have lived in HOT climates all of our 40+ years of marriage and were looking for a mild climate where a jacket can be worn. We have lived in places where high 90's or triple digit temps aren't unusual. Volcano fits the bill exactly plus as a artist/quilter I find it a perfect place to create.
The peace and quiet of Hale Mahina Cottage and having a home to entertain our family and friends while we are visiting the Big Island of Hawai'i.
This is a review sent via our email in regards to our cottage -she asked me to post it for her.
"What a wonderful place to stay in Volcano for a week!!!. We wished we had been at Hale Mahina Cottage for a much longer time. But we'll come back for sure. Our son from Honolulu came over for a weekend. He was - as well as we were - fascinated by the amenities, above all the electric blankets and the good working fireplace. So nice to enjoy the cool nights and a cozy breakfast room in the morning. We loved to watch the apapane in the Ohia tree while having our meals.
All rooms were very well equipped and decorated and impeccably clean. We admired the wonderful quilts giving the house a unique Hawaiian touch
Another reason for a MUST - RETURN is the location. It's so quiet and only some minutes away from the Halemaumau crator. A must-see in the evening when glowing."
We loved this cottage! The kitchen is stocked with every conceivable gadget, pot, cookware, cup, glass, dish, etc. Also, there were many items such as hot chocolate, tea, spices, etc. Cheryl's directions to the cottage were very easy to follow. We've stayed at Volcanoes Village in the past and have gotten lost on the back roads, but this cottage was easy to find. All the furnishings and beds were very comfortable and it was spotlessly clean. The grounds are lovely and we enjoyed sitting on the back lanai gazing at the stars.
We ordered take-out from the Thai Thai restaurant and it was delicious and very reasonably priced.
If you have the time, you must walk the 4.2 miles to the active lava flow. It was awesome. We are 65 and 68 and we walked it in 1 1/2 hours from the National Park side. Bring flashlights for the return trip.
My wife, 3 kids, and I stayed at Hale Mahina during a multi-leg Hawaii vacation. Of the properties we stayed at, this was the favorite. The location is great - easy drive from the Hilo airport and really close to Volcano National Park. The home is lovely and the grounds are lush. Cheryl, the owner, was great - she kept in contact with us as we neared our trip, provided some good input on things to do and places to eat. In addition, she really has this cottage setup well for visitors. We felt at home right away and appreciated all the thoughtful things she's done with the home to make it an easy stay for travelers. Having covered parking was nice and enjoyed sitting on the front porch and resting after long days at the park. We enjoyed Thai Thai restaurant in Volcano Village while here and had lunch at the lodge in Volcano National Park sitting at a table looking out over the Kilauea crater - very cool. Seeing the glow of the magma from the Jagger Museum observation point at night was a definite highlight. Just missed the lava flowing into the ocean from the Pu'u O'o vent - that happened a few days after we left. Would definitely recommend Hale Mahina if you're planning a visit to the Volcano area on the Big Island.
My family (me, my wife, my mom and my three year old son) stayed in the Hale Mahina cottage for a couple of nights on our visit to Volcano National Park. We flew from the mainland to Kona and it was a long day when we reached the VNP area. As soon as we stepped into the cottage, it felt just like home. Every thing you could ask for in a home was there, including toys and story books that my three year old son loved. The kitchen was very well stocked if you love cooking. The beds were cozy and comfortable. The surrounding was serene and beautiful- I could easily spend a day there sitting on the lanai soaking in the nature all around. The location of this cottage is terrific. VNP was only a few minutes drive from here. We would explore the park in the morning, come back for an afternoon nap for my three year old son and then go back to see the lava glow later in the night. Our only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer.
Myself, mother ,brother and sister in law stayed for 2 nights during May. It was nice to be so close to the Volcano Park. We went to the Park the first night we got there to see the lava at sun set. Was a quick hop there. Cottage was nice change from Waikoloa Beach. Quite. Has every thing you need for a relaxing vacation. Beds were comfortable, bathrooms clean. Water pressure was great. We tried hard not to use too much, because of the water tank, but it was not a problem. Cheryl was great to work with. Took a check so didn't have to tie up my credit card. Sent me a reminder about when the final was due. Stores are far so plan ahead. Cheryl told us where the stores were so we planned before.
My sister and I enjoyed this comfortable and well kept cottage for two nights while touring Volcanoes National Park. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed for cooking, and enjoyed resting here after a long day in the park. It is exceptionally quiet and serene at the house, and we had the pleasure of seeing the lava glow from the front yard. This home is just a few miles from the entrance to the park, so it was very simple to come and go as we desired. It was cool when we rose in the mornings, so we simply turned on the gas log fireplace which quickly made the cottage warm and toasty within minutes. I loved the cozy blankets available in the living room for your comfort on cool evenings or mornings. Be sure to purchase food for cooking prior to coming to town, because the local market has limited food available for purchase. There are enough restaurants, however, to suit everyone's tastes, and they are conveniently located. I highly recommend a stay at this cozy and comfortable home while you explore the nearby park. The owners thoughtfully included a wealth of information for you to peruse upon arrival too.
Our family highly recommends this adorable cottage as a homebase for exploring Volcano National Park. The owner was easy to work with and the house was perfect for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids). Everything was clean and we loved its cozy feel and decor. I would've been happy just hanging out at the cottage all day to read and relax, but we did motivate to see the sights of the National Park. There were toys for the kids and the washer and dryer were great to have after we got soaked on a hike. Will definitely recommend to family and friends looking to visit Volcano.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is just a 3 mile drive from the House as well as Volcano Village Shops and restaurants. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach with occasional turtles, is a 35 minute drive from the house and 45 minute drive to Hilo, where you will find Beaches, shopping and Botanical Gardens.
