Hale Mahina, meaning house of the moon, is conveniently located about two miles south past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Volcano Golf Course and Country Club Division. It is nestled among the Ohia trees in one of the worlds most beautiful forests. Enjoy the crisp mountain air at the crest of the sunny side of Volcano.
This cozy 2 bedroom, 2 bath home is built in the Plantation Cottage style with an open floor plan.
Rooms are large, comfortable and clean, and our fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook in. Area farmers markets daily in Hilo and Sundays Open Market at Volcano offer produce at its best along with island crafts. Think fresh papaya every morning. The Volcano Winery is 539 steps away from the house where you can view the vineyards and enjoy wine tastings. If you choose not to cook in, Volcano Village has several restaurants serving lunch and dinner and there are also two small country grocery stores. ATM's are available here.
The Volcano Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole course in the view of Mauna Loa (13,680') with the clubhouse restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a visitors center to guide you through the vastness of this incredible National Park. Daily volcano activity is available here for day and night viewing. Tour by car or walk/hike the miles of trails while hearing the songs of the native forest birds. You will learn about our local active Volcano, Kilauea at Jagger Museum.
Sea Mountain Golf Course and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where you might see Green sea turtles, is a beautiful 35 minute drive. Hilo is a 45 minute drive where you will find waterfalls, shopping, beaches and Botanical Gardens.
The area also has several exceptional art galleries which shouldn't be missed.
As cocktail hour approaches, watch from your lanai as the sun sets behind Mauna Loa, while the colorful neighborhood kalij pheasants scurry to their night time nests. As the cool night air descends upon the village, snuggle up to the warmth of the gas log fire place. Do venture out after dark to see the stars on our back deck or take a hike in the park to see the latest lava activity. You certainly won't be disappointed.

About Cheryl Nathaniel
Frank is originally from Hilo Hawaii and Cheryl from Minnesota. We purchased our home in Volcano 2007 and plan to use it as a retirement retreat in the future. We love the solitude of the area.
Cheryl Nathaniel purchased this House in 2007
Why Cheryl Nathaniel chose Mountain View
Frank and I have lived in HOT climates all of our 40+ years of marriage and were looking for a mild climate where a jacket can be worn. We have lived in places where high 90's or triple digit temps aren't unusual. Volcano fits the bill exactly plus as a artist/quilter I find it a perfect place to create.
What makes this House unique
The peace and quiet of Hale Mahina Cottage and having a home to entertain our family and friends while we are visiting the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Cozy and delightful getaway
Hale Mahina is a beautiful cottage in Volcano. It is impeccably maintained, very comfortable and equipped with everything you could possibly need for a perfect stay. One added treat is its proximity to the Volcano Winery, you can actually walk there for a wine tasting. We highly recommend it. We will definitely return,
And it is a short walk. The Volcano Winery has a nice cheese tray available with the tastings.
My husband and I loved our stay at the Hale Mahina Cottage. The house is very nice and well set up for guests. The easy parking and carport was great. The back deck and front porch were perfect for enjoying the birds and the landscaping. The neighborhood is nice and so quiet. I loved being able to walk around and not have to worry about traffic. We went to Volcano with the intention of visiting the National Park - that didn’t work out because it was closed due to the volcanic activity and earthquakes. That was OK; we got to relax and enjoy ourselves in this comfortable house. Cheryl, the owner, was great to deal with and very responsive to emails. Plus she’s a quilter so we have that in common and we enjoyed the beautiful quilts she has in the house. We will definitely be back on our next trip to the Big Island.
Great getaway location
Perfect comfy and clean cottage. Good location on drier side of volcano. Many pantry items and misc items you might need. Very thoughtful amenities. Clear instructions and information. We will be back. A very calming and peaceful place.
Meticulously maintained property in a great location.
This place is an absolute must stay if you plan to visit the volcano. My Girlfriend and I spent 4 days in Kona and decided to see Hilo coast and volcano while staying here. First off this is a very quaint and quiet town. Also much cooler than either coast. The host has set up this property with only one thing in mind— the guests. The attention to detail at this impeccably maintained property is a true delight. I was so impressed by the electric blanket, the clock ( for the power outages that seem to happen quite a bit), the makeup removal sheets, the umbrellas, the house slippers, the notes that tell you where everything is, the list goes on. The fireplace is awesome of course to unwind after a long day We also got very lucky and had some amazing views of the volcano lava flow both days and nights. Dont miss the night sighting. It is breathtaking. The other plus of staying here, you can do the entire east coast day trip and the traffic is so light all the while. All in all a great place that I would HIGHLY recommend.
Our family had a quick overnight stop to enjoy the volcanoes and waterfalls before heading back to Kona. All the amenities were great and several were upgraded (linens and towels) which made things much more comfortable.
Beautiful house! Loved waking up the sounds of the birds. Peaceful...
