Hale Mahina, meaning house of the moon, is conveniently located about two miles south past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Volcano Golf Course and Country Club Division. It is nestled among the Ohia trees in one of the worlds most beautiful forests. Enjoy the crisp mountain air at the crest of the sunny side of Volcano.
This cozy 2 bedroom, 2 bath home is built in the Plantation Cottage style with an open floor plan.
Rooms are large, comfortable and clean, and our fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook in. Area farmers markets daily in Hilo and Sundays Open Market at Volcano offer produce at its best along with island crafts. Think fresh papaya every morning. The Volcano Winery is 539 steps away from the house where you can view the vineyards and enjoy wine tastings. If you choose not to cook in, Volcano Village has several restaurants serving lunch and dinner and there are also two small country grocery stores. ATM's are available here.
The Volcano Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole course in the view of Mauna Loa (13,680') with the clubhouse restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a visitors center to guide you through the vastness of this incredible National Park. Daily volcano activity is available here for day and night viewing. Tour by car or walk/hike the miles of trails while hearing the songs of the native forest birds. You will learn about our local active Volcano, Kilauea at Jagger Museum.
Sea Mountain Golf Course and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where you might see Green sea turtles, is a beautiful 35 minute drive. Hilo is a 45 minute drive where you will find waterfalls, shopping, beaches and Botanical Gardens.
The area also has several exceptional art galleries which shouldn't be missed.
As cocktail hour approaches, watch from your lanai as the sun sets behind Mauna Loa, while the colorful neighborhood kalij pheasants scurry to their night time nests. As the cool night air descends upon the village, snuggle up to the warmth of the gas log fire place. Do venture out after dark to see the stars on our back deck or take a hike in the park to see the latest lava activity. You certainly won't be disappointed.
Frank is originally from Hilo Hawaii and Cheryl from Minnesota. We purchased our home in Volcano 2007 and plan to use it as a retirement retreat in the future. We love the solitude of the area.
Cheryl Nathaniel purchased this house in 2007
Frank and I have lived in HOT climates all of our 40+ years of marriage and were looking for a mild climate where a jacket can be worn. We have lived in places where high 90's or triple digit temps aren't unusual. Volcano fits the bill exactly plus as a artist/quilter I find it a perfect place to create.
The peace and quiet of Hale Mahina Cottage and having a home to entertain our family and friends while we are visiting the Big Island of Hawai'i.
This is a review sent via our email in regards to our cottage -she asked me to post it for her.
"What a wonderful place to stay in Volcano for a week!!!. We wished we had been at Hale Mahina Cottage for a much longer time. But we'll come back for sure. Our son from Honolulu came over for a weekend. He was - as well as we were - fascinated by the amenities, above all the electric blankets and the good working fireplace. So nice to enjoy the cool nights and a cozy breakfast room in the morning. We loved to watch the apapane in the Ohia tree while having our meals.
All rooms were very well equipped and decorated and impeccably clean. We admired the wonderful quilts giving the house a unique Hawaiian touch
Another reason for a MUST - RETURN is the location. It's so quiet and only some minutes away from the Halemaumau crator. A must-see in the evening when glowing."
We recently had our third stay at Hale Mahina in the last year. Whenever we have visitors from the Mainland, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is always a "must see". Hale Mahina is very convenient to the National Park and the neighboring amenities, galleries, restaurants, the Saturday Farmers Market in Volcano. The accommodations are perfect for two couples; two bedrooms and two full baths. The open floor plan in the living area feels very spacious. And lastly, working with Cheryl is always a pleasure!
Arriving at Hale Mahina at the end of our island-hopping trip was like coming home, but in a much more spectacular setting! The cottage is lovely and so well-equipped... The hosts really have thought of everything you might need. For us, the location was perfect - a short drive from the Volcano National Park so we could visit as often as we (or our young son) wanted! Plus a 3 minute walk to the Volcano Winery to enjoy wine tastings. But you are still close enough to visit Hilo & the East/South coast beaches (30-60 min drive away).
We loved our stay here and cannot recommend it highly enough.
We stayed for 5 days an explored the area. The house met all our needs for family of 4. Little cooler in the area in the am so fireplace and heaters were nice. The yard is great for relaxing and coffee in the am. The house is well stocked with all that we needed.
Lovely cottage from which to explore Hawaii Volcano National Park and surrounding area. Only regret is that we didn't stay longer!
We stayed one night and wished we could stay longer. The house is comfortable, cozy and well stocked. It is beautifully decorated and maintained. Cheryl was very easy to work with and very helpful. A side benefit was that the stars were amazing!
Wanted to stay in a home near black sands beach and Volcanos National Park and this lovely home certainly fit the bill. The home is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood which is quiet and off the main highway. The home is super clean and modern, yet spacious. Cheryl was very responsive and attentive and only an email or call away. My only regret was that I couldn't stay longer! I hope to stay again.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is just a 3 mile drive from the House as well as Volcano Village Shops and restaurants. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach with occasional turtles, is a 35 minute drive from the house and 45 minute drive to Hilo, where you will find Beaches, shopping and Botanical Gardens.
