Bowsprit Cottage: Oceanfront Home with Spectacular Views

Bedrooms 2
Half Baths1
Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

2 BR Cottage, 1.5 Baths, Sleeps 4-6

Stunning panoramic views abound from this charming & spacious cottage just a short stroll from a beautiful private sand beach. Your most stressful moment may be choosing from which window to watch the endless colors and textures of surf, sky and multitude of rocks.

Bowsprit has its name because its vista and proximity to the sea are as if perched on the bowsprit of a schooner, a perfect setting for a family holiday or romantic getaway. As guests in the small private community of Indian Point, you will enjoy full access to several sandy beaches, miles of beautiful rocks, tide pools teeming with critters, a nature preserve, and even a boat launch on a sheltered bay.

A spacious master bedroom, with private half-bath and queen bed, is just down the hall from a full bath, second bedroom, and separate den. The heart of this 1,200 square foot home is the airy, window-filled living/dining/kitchen with spectacular ocean views from every window.

Romantic Hideaway or Family Cottage: Drift to sleep with the murmuring of the surf and wake to a sunrise dancing across the water. Stay up late for spectacular starry skies, the flashes of vigilant lighthouses, and romantic moonlight sparkling on the sea. For lovers of all ages Bowsprit is that special place to be away from it all with that special person in one of the most beautiful spots in Maine.

Or make this your home base for a memorable Maine family vacation with beach days and explorations here at Indian Point interspersed with trips to the mainland for museums, shopping in Freeport, poking about the shops in Boothbay Harbor, a schooner trip, charter fishing, antiquing, concerts and exhibits.

Why Get Back in the Car?: Without even searching for the keys you can swim and play at nearly empty sandy beaches, find a shipwreck lost among the beach roses, explore woods and salt marshes, kayak tidal rivers, watch birds or perhaps playful seals & dolphins with our telescope, identify anemones and starfish in the tide pools, indulge in beach novels, or rekindle that latent interest in watercolor painting.

Check out our Website!: Please visit our Website (link below) to find a Photo Gallery, links to local activities, and dozens of Guest Comments.

The electric power at Bowsprit is 100% emission-free electricity from Maine Renewable Energy. It comes from a combination of low impact Maine hydro power produced in Maine and wind power from the Northeast. It costs more, but we believe it is critically important.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Welcome to the Bowsprit Guestbook. 2005 will be the first full season renting out our cottage, so this guestbook is just beginning. We hope guests will add to this online guestbook, and we will be posting entries later this summer from the "real" guestbook in the cottage as well.Bowsprit began as our family summer cottage more than 40 years ago after we had rented a cottage for a few summers down here at Indian Point about 1960. In fact the original part of our cottage was completely built by our family over three summers. In 1982 it was enlarged and winterized, and became our parents' year-round retirement home. Now that they have "moved to town" near their children, we decided as a family to open Bowsprit for summer rentals. We are pleased to be able to share Bowsprit with you and know you will enjoy it as much as our 3 generations have and continue to enjoy it. It is a fantastic place for kids of all ages to play and explore without having to spend hours driving up and down the coast. It is also a wonderfully romantic getaway with spectacular views and a cozy cottage. (In fact daughter Rachel and husband James honeymooned here in January!) With private sandy beaches, a forest preserve, multiple access paths to the rocks, boat launch, tide pools, mud flats, islands, a shipwreck, tidal rivers, marshes, lighthouses, and wonderful walks, you will probably rarely get back into your car. But when you do you are very close to lobster and fish at the wharf, dining and a store right here in Georgetown, Reid State Park, Maine Maritime Museum and the shipyard in Bath, schooners and touristing in Boothbay, shopping Beans and the outlets in Freeport, and a seemingly infinite number of galleries and antique shops. One week will not be enough. So from the 3 generations of Scherer and Madsen families, Welcome to Bowsprit!

Just beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Bowsprit for a week and it was amazing. The location is gorgeous, although there are many other homes in the area, the natural landscape of trees and rocks create a private haven when you are outside watching and listening to the ocean. The spotting scope inside was great fun. The house itself has everything you could possibly need, comfortable, clean and quiet. We saw porpoises right outside on our first morning there! It was just the 2 of us but we're already thinking of planning a trip with a few friends who would love this environment. The country store has amazing breakfast food (we went back 3 times for blueberry pancakes & egg sandwiches). And Sarah, the agent was amazing- really gave us the lay of the land on the phone and when we saw her in town. Just a fantastic experience.

Gorgeous summer getaway

  • 5 of 5

Bowsprint cottage was everything we had hoped for. The views from the main living and eating area are amazing -- a beautiful view of the ocean on all three sides, with floor to ceiling windows. It does feel like sitting in the bow of a boat! The cottage itself was comfortable for our entire family.

Our oldest son loved being right on the rocks, and he would walk on the rocks down to the private beach (which can also be accessed via a five-minute walk on the regular road). The one thing I would caution is that we had to be really mindful of our toddler, because the small grassy yard is not fenced in, and he would run straight for the rocks (which are great for an 8-year old but dangerous for a solo 2-year old).

The manager of the property, Kelly, was awesome and accomodating! In sum, I would definitely rent this place again.

Amazing coast views!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cottage, Bowsprit has amazing views, words can't describe it. Our stay was great, Bath is not to far away either. Only down side for us, since we traveled so far away, we couldn't pack linens, (bed sheets, bath towels/cloths) so we had to pay for linens, sadly it was only one towel and cloth for 7 days, so we had to go out and buy extra clothes and towels after paying for linens. Next time we have to get a place where this is included and would have enough for a weeks stay. Besides that, it's a great place for someone who lives close by.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you loved Bowsprit Cottage so much. Thank you for bringing the towel situation to my attention. I am sorry this happened, and I have asked the rental manager to provide extra towels as needed for future guests. Rachel

A Perfect Represetative of Maine

  • 5 of 5

We just spent our third year at Bowsprit Cottage. Each year, it gets better and better. The views are spectacular, the house is clean and welcoming. Since our first year, we feel like we are coming home!

The house lost power this year during our stay. We didn't even notice! The television is never on, the views are too captivating. With the gas stove and fireplace, we were warm and fed. Kelly checked on us, and the book that is left on the table explains where to find candles, water, and a radio. It made the stay even more charming. We watched the storm roll in through the windows in the living room..spectacular! And if you choose to leave all this splendor, there are so many things to do within a short driving or walking distance. This is truly heaven on earth! We will be back next year!!

Ideal September getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had great expectations for this place; if anything they were exceeded. The house was clean, comfortable and well equipped. It was also very quiet and remarkably private, considering the relative proximity of other properties. The views are outstanding. As others remarked, the photos can't do them justice. Walking in the Indian Point area was a great pleasure with some of the most beautiful and interesting bits of the Maine coast I've seen in one area. We've vacationed up and down the coast for many years and this was the nicest place yet. We liked the Five Islands Farm for convenience, with high quality local produce, meat & oysters.

We definitely hope to return & felt it was well worth the rates.

Maine at its October

  • 5 of 5

The home was warm, welcoming, and best of all spotless. The owners went the extra mile to provide all the necessary information and accomodations to make our vacation perfect. The description on-line is perfect, but the beauty and peace are beyond description. The gas fireplace was a perfect touch. The stars seemed to be just an arms length away. Bowsprit is a perfect place to get away from it all and admire nature at its best. Since our stay was in October we had limited choices of restaurants, due to them being closed for the season. But, we loved every minute of our time at this wonderful home. Thanks for the hospitality.
