About the property

6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms farmhouse with fantastic indoor heated pool

Hop Farm is a charming farmhouse with all modern amenities, dated 1715 with use of a full-size heated indoor pool, 6 bedrooms, four bathrooms and parking for 10 cars.

Hop Farm is brilliantly situated in the back-of-beyond real farming country of East Kent, yet it is less than 2 hours from London by car, 1 hour by hi-speed train, within 30 minutes of the Channel Tunnel and Ferry ports, and 45 minutes from Ashford for Eurostar (Paris or Brussels 2 hours).

Hop Farm has a beautiful all-weather heated swimming pool for your exclusive use, Wi-Fi, barbecue and table tennis.

There are also up to six old bikes on request ( including a bicycle made for two!). Please bring your own cycle helmets.

Next to Hop Farm is our beautiful, private grass tennis court which we can share with you. Just ask when booking should you wish to use it. You will need to bring your own racquets, tennis balls and tennis shoes. Being grass, the court is closed October to May.

Hop Farm is surrounded by fields and lovely Kent orchards which are ideal for country walks, including a half-hour one through lovely orchards and fields to our local pub, The Rising Sun.

Interesting places to visit nearby include historic Sandwich (with several golf courses including the world-famous Royal St George's Golf Club) and Canterbury with its world-renowned Cathedral, city walls and designer shopping and the nearby vineyards for Kent wine.

There are many children's attractions very near, including Wingham Wildlife Park, the famous Howletts Zoo, Roman Richborough Castle and Ramsgate, Margate and Deal beaches. Dover Castle, the second-biggest fully-intact castle after Windsor, is always a hit with children.

Hop Farm offers accommodation for normally 12 persons. Extra guests up to a maximum of 16 are charged at a nominal rate of £40 per person per night for which they are provided with sleepover beds. Babies in arms are free of course.

About Vaughan Grylls

Vaughan is an artist and writer and retired head of the University for the Creative Arts where he serves as emeritus professor. Polly is the owner of a publishing company in London. Two 'children' - Hattie, 23, who is now working in publishing in London and George 21 , currently at Oxford University. One rescue cat, Jasper, who murders small animals. One often annoying but always charming Be the Beagle.

We divide our time between our house in London, our house in Kent, which is near Hop Farm and La Spinosa in Italy ( No: 429689) which we have rented out successfully as a holiday home - lots of reviews! - for several years.

Vaughan Grylls purchased this farmhouse in 2012

Why Vaughan Grylls chose Kent

A charming country house with its own, exclusive use swimming pool, near the sea, within striking distance of London and the continent yet completely away from it all and with plenty of room and great country walks for humans and dogs.

What makes this farmhouse unique

An astonishing, exclusive pool.

Perfect accommodation, perfect location, perfect celebration

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate mum's 70th. There were 15 of us including children aged 2 to 11. It was the perfect venue: comfortable, spacious and clean with all the basics and more. The pool was the biggest hit: children and adults alike.

Thank you to Vaughan and Polly (and Jenny) for providing such a pleasant setting in which we were able to create many happy and special memories. I hesitate to recommend as I'm not sure I want to share such a gem. Will definitely look to return in the future.

Wonderful week in Kent Countryside

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we booked, everything ran smoothly, from questions being answered promptly, to paying, to even receiving emails from the housekeeper asking how we wanted the bedrooms set up (Singles, doubles, cot etc)

Check in was a breeze and the instructions given guided us straight to the property. Jenny the housekeeper showed us round, and gave us a few instructions on the house workings but then left us to our own devices.

On arrival we headed straight to the wonderful pool, which was lovely and warm, in fact the kids (And adults) were in the pool all week, morning and afternoon and many games of table tennis were also played in the pool room.

House was used a base to explore Sandwich, Deal and a trip to Wingham Wildlife Park as well as having enough to do on site to have days just chilling out within the house.

The garden is enclosed which was great for us as we had the 2 dogs with us.

There are lots of walks locally and we as a family (13 of us) did the "guided" walk to the pub. The guide being the owners photographs in an album. Very original but good fun.

All in all a fabulous week and we would have no hesitation in returning. Hopefully next year!

This property is large, spacious, luxurious, warm with all amenities needed to enjoy your stay

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at this property for Christmas 2016. It was the most wonderfully magical Christmas we have ever had. We walked into the large hallway to see the most beautiful large Christmas Tree when we first arrived. The cottage is large and spacious with various small stair cases with hidden bedrooms and enough bathrooms for all 14 of us. The kitchen was large and well equipped which was perfect for cooking our turkey and it overlooked the gorgeous Kent countryside. The living room was warm and comfortable and there was enough seating for all. The swimming pool was a great addition to our festive break and we enjoyed a swim in the heated pool on Christmas day. The owner and housekeeper are extremely welcoming and helpful, would definitely stay again! I'd recommend anyone to stay here, it's absolutely perfect.

A fantastic venue for our family get-together

  • 5 of 5

Three generations of the family, aged 8 - 70, enjoyed a wonderful weekend at Hop Farm. We anticipated an old farmhouse, possibly draughty in November, but were pleasantly surprised by the warm, modern interior. The kitchen is very well equipped, the lounge and bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and the dining room enjoys the morning sun.

The biggest attraction was the pool, kept at a lovely 30°C - the children spent hours there. The younger two generations had a lot of fun with the tandem.

We drove into Broadstairs, less than half an hour away, and can recommend Morelli's ice cream and the sandy beach.

Thank you Vaughan, Polly and Jenny for your help. We hope to return!

Our third stay and won't be our last :-)

  • 5 of 5

Our third visit as a group of 11 girlfriends and as usual we had a very relaxing time! It's spacious yet cozy and we love it. We noticed some new additions this time which were great - an extra en-suite shower room and a massive new boiler. The owners are lovely and we would all recommend this place without hesitation. Enjoy!

The Barn is in a secluded setting in the middle of beautiful countryside - a perfect get away!

  • 4 of 5

We have just enjoyed our fourth stay, enabling four families to share quality, catch-up time together. We are able to relax, and always self-cater in a well-appointed kitchen. Bedrooms are comfy and the housekeeper is happy to make up any number of beds to give children a choice of where they can sleep. We have enjoyed BBQs and a large log fire later in the year, when colder. The children are always very excited about visiting and spend many hours in the super, heated swimming pool. There are a variety of other games such as table tennis and cricket. We enjoy wonderful walks in the surrounding countryside and our two dogs equally enjoy themselves, being made very welcome and able to wander in a secure field and gardens.

Sandwich is about a 20 minutes drive away in case extra shopping is needed, being a very attractive town to wander around, with good

restaurants and cafes. Canterbury is also close with the cathedral providing a stunning visit. Again many restaurants as well as a huge range of shops and the Beaney museum which holds interesting exhibitions.

The owner has asked for feed-back after visits and has implemented changes as a result.
