Mount Desert House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedroom, 2 bath, sleeps 8

Built in 2004, the Fern Way home is a delightful blend of modern convenience and rustic style. Designed by a local architect to integrate with the beautiful natural setting of Mount Desert Island, at every turn Fern Way celebrates the natural world.

A gently curving driveway through the woods leads to the quiet 4.5 acres that surrounds Fern Way. The attractive exterior is Adirondack style live edge siding, complemented by cedar posts supporting an entry porch overlooking the large lawn. Entering the house, two French doors lead you into a large open floor plan allowing for ease and comfort of a large group or family gathering.

Classic post and beam details include a stunning custom banister in maple and a soaring two story stonewall that defines the sunny living area. The large kitchen is ideal for preparing family meals with ample counter space, appliances and gadgets.

A screened porch with dining table and futon couch is the perfect spot to start your day with coffee and end it with sunsets through the trees. The basement includes a home gym with top of the line Bowflex weight machine, Sole elliptical trainer, rowing machine, and yoga mat all for your enjoyment.

The large master bedroom with a king bed is located upstairs as well as a bedroom with a double bed, a bedroom with two twin beds, and a full bathroom complete with a two-person jetted tub to helps ease tired muscles after a fun filled day exploring Acadia. Downstairs is a bedroom with a double bed, a bathroom with shower, and the screened porch with a new futon, which can be used as an extra bedroom or by those wishing to sleep in the fresh air of the Maine woods.

About Jennifer Wales

Adam and Jen have a deep love and understanding of the natural beauty surrounding the Acadia/Mount Desert Island area. Jen grew up summers on Long Pond and Adam on a 110-acre farm in Western Maine adjoining the Appalachian Trail. They met here in Bar Harbor working as sea kayak guides in the summer of 1993.

Over the years, they have hiked, biked, paddled, and sailed every conceivable route on and around Mount Desert. Adam completed his goal of hiking every trail on the Island in the summer of 1994 and Jen authored The Sea Kayaker's Guide to Mount Desert Island published by Down East Books in 1997. Together they paddled the Maine Island Trail, a 175-mile 28-day kayaking trip from Portland to Machias, up the entire Maine coastline.

In the summer of 2000, Jen and Adam started Mountain Sea Properties with a single house, Eagle Cliff, where they were married that same summer. The owner had approached them expressing her frustration renting the home through larger rental operations on the island. She complained that her house was one of hundreds represented so the service she received was minimal. She also stated that those who rented the house were not as well informed as they could be. The tenants were also one of hundreds and the service they received was minimal.

Adam and Jen offered to represent the house committing to providing top quality service to both owners and tenants by representing a limited number of houses and providing personalized vacation services.

Since then, Mountain Sea Properties has grown along with the Wales family. As year-round members of the Island’s community, Adam and Jen are dedicated to the vitality of the people of Mount Desert Island. Thus, each year they donate a portion of their proceeds to local organizations devoted to sustaining the beauty and well-being of the Mount Desert Island area.

Great house and location, highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here in June 2009, and based on our experience, would recommend for anyone looking for a great vacation home.

The property is new, very well maintained, clean, and as described. In fact, the photos do not quite do justice to our favorite features including an excellent kitchen and a screened-in porch with a quiet, serene view of the surrounding woods.

The location is convenient to access both the park and nearby activities like Long Pond and Beech Mountain.

The owners were terrific to work with and helped with many great tips and advice before and during our stay. They also provide loads of current local information, organized in a big file box with maps, brochures, menus, etc. The small library of books was handy as well - covering everything from bird watching to sea kayaking and hiking guides.

Mount Desert Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The home was so lovely, set among the trees. We couldn't have asked for a more serene, picturesque setting. Our little granddaughter looked excitedly for deer grazing each morning and was not disappointed. Jen and Adam's home is inviting and very comfortable. We loved being able to cook, grill, and simply relax: just like being at home. Thank you for making our family vacation and my husband's 70 th birthday so special!

Accommodating, clean and tranquil

  • 5 of 5

Jennifer's home was wonderful for our 8 adults and two little ones! It was steps from Long Pond and main highways to get to town and the park. We even met Jen, herself, who was happy to share her own family stories and revel in the winters they spend on the island. We would definitely consider staying again if we had the right group size!

Acadia Serenity

  • 5 of 5

When you step out of your vehicle, make sure to take a moment to smell the air. The evergreen scent mingled with the earthiness of the area will soon become normal. Don't let that moment slip by unnoticed. What a wonderful property for our first visit to Maine and Mount Desert Island. Jen and Adam were wonderfully accommodating from the start. We had a window in which we could travel and they made the 4 nights work out for us. Fern Way is extremely warm and inviting. We arrived after dark the first evening, and felt immediately at home. We had our four youngest children with us (12 to 18), and the home had more than enough room to give everyone their space. The kitchen was workable for making our evening meals and Adam came to our rescue when the gas grill regulator went out. The organic market is just a few miles down the road, which is a must if you want some really good locally grown produce. The home was clean, furnished nicely and worked perfectly for our stay. We wanted to be on the quiet side of the island away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor. That is what we got. It was amazingly dark at night and sleeping with the windows open, all you could hear were the loons on the nearby lake. The Acadia hikes were all within 30 minutes, and were wonderful (thanks Jen!). We rented kayaks one afternoon....which you can walk to from the house. We had a wonderful time, and felt like it was one place we could easily return to again. Thanks to Jen, Adam and Fern Way for making some lasting memories for our family!

Fern Way is perfect for a group stay on MDI

  • 5 of 5

The house is wonderful and well equipped. The place is quiet and the surroundings peaceful. Our group of six enjoyed our time there. Southwest Harbor is an easy drive and Bar Harbor is easily accessible. Jen and Adam were the perfect hosts. Thank you.

Located in the heart of Mount Desert Island, Fern Way is no more than 10 min from all attractions including the secluded hidden treasures on the “quiet side” of Acadia National Park. From Bar Harbor and the breathtaking Park Loop Rd to Bass Harbor and its famous lighthouse, you’ll spend more time exploring the wonders of this lovely island and less time getting there. Best of all, it is a short 5 min walk to Long Pond, the largest lake on the island where there is a picnic area, swimming beach, and canoe/kayak rental. Nearby are several other treasures of Mount Desert Island including the Beech Mt. hiking area, Beech Hill organic farm stand, and the village of Somesville and Somes Harbor where you can access the free island wide shuttle bus.

As part of our vacation services offered to our tenants, we have put together a local dinning guide, a guide to the supermarkets, specialty food stores and farmers markets, a first timers guide to Mount Desert Island, as well as local recommendations for traveling with kids.
