About Jennifer Wales

Adam and Jen have a deep love and understanding of the natural beauty surrounding the Acadia/Mount Desert Island area. Jen grew up summers on Long Pond and Adam on a 110-acre farm in Western Maine adjoining the Appalachian Trail. They met here in Bar Harbor working as sea kayak guides in the summer of 1993.

Over the years, they have hiked, biked, paddled, and sailed every conceivable route on and around Mount Desert. Adam completed his goal of hiking every trail on the Island in the summer of 1994 and Jen authored The Sea Kayaker's Guide to Mount Desert Island published by Down East Books in 1997. Together they paddled the Maine Island Trail, a 175-mile 28-day kayaking trip from Portland to Machias, up the entire Maine coastline.

In the summer of 2000, Jen and Adam started Mountain Sea Properties with a single house, Eagle Cliff, where they were married that same summer. The owner had approached them expressing her frustration renting the home through larger rental operations on the island. She complained that her house was one of hundreds represented so the service she received was minimal. She also stated that those who rented the house were not as well informed as they could be. The tenants were also one of hundreds and the service they received was minimal.

Adam and Jen offered to represent the house committing to providing top quality service to both owners and tenants by representing a limited number of houses and providing personalized vacation services.

Since then, Mountain Sea Properties has grown along with the Wales family. As year-round members of the Island’s community, Adam and Jen are dedicated to the vitality of the people of Mount Desert Island. Thus, each year they donate a portion of their proceeds to local organizations devoted to sustaining the beauty and well-being of the Mount Desert Island area.

Jennifer Wales purchased this house in 1990

Eagle Cliff

  • 5 of 5

Our week at Eagle Cliff went by WAY too fast. The house was charming, spacious, fantastically equipped, cozy and very comfortable. The views from almost every window were breathtaking. Enjoying that first cup of coffee on the deck each morning, watching the lobster boats going about their business and listening to the birds call was a slice of heaven and the perfect start to every day. We were enchanted with the wildlife that browsed right outside the kitchen windows. As a family, we enjoyed working on the many jigsaw puzzles that were provided for rainy evenings. A thouroughly delightful week and one we will long remember and cherish. Deb & Ron

Owner's Response: DebRon, And thank YOU for bringing the sun with you! I am so glad to hear that your family had such a great time at Eagle Cliff. It sounds like we were successful at meeting our goals of providing a top quality vacation home from which to base your adventures in Acadia National Park. From the sounds of it the highlight of your trip happened right from the comfort of the deck overlooking Frenchman Bay! We look forward to seeing you all again. Jen Wales, MtnSea Properties.

Great location and views

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Eagle Cliff the week of 4th of July. There were 8 of us in the house (6 adults and 2 teens). The house is in a great location. We rented bikes for the week and rode them into downtown Bar Harbor each day (which was great because parking is hard to come by). The house sits high above Frenchman's Bay and has lovely views from the patio, dining room and master bedroom. The house itself is in need of some updating, but overall it is nice. The master bedroom is very spacious and has a huge bathroom. The second bedroom upstairs with a double bed was large enough, but there was only a double bed in the room. It would be nice to have a larger bed, since many couples are used to queen and king beds these days. The shared bathroom upstairs was very small and the shower has a sloping roof, so watch your head! My teenage sons shared the third upstairs bedroom that has 2 twin beds. The room is very small, but adequate. Again, some updating would be nice (80's wallpaper and red carpet). The only bedroom that I would give a negative comment about is the downstairs bedroom. It is very small and dark. The kitchen had plenty of cabinet space and a nice table. However, the stove is an old 4 burner electric that proved to be difficult to cook on for 8 people. 3 of the nights we were there, we cooked lobster. It was a challenge to get both large pots on the old stove! Again, some updating is needed but the stove and oven functioned. The patio had great views of the bay, and we often saw deer, fox and other wildlife outside. The patio furniture is inadequate for the house. We left suggestions for the owners to add additional seating and make the outside more usable (since that is where you will want to be when the weather is nice). One thing we experienced this trip which was different from last year was the mosquitoes. Maybe it is because the house is in a wooded area, but the bugs were brutal. I strongly suggest bringing bug spray! Overall, Eagle Cliff was a nice house. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bar Harbor, and look forward to our next visit.

A Week in Maine Paradise in Comfort and Style

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Eagle Cliff for a week in early July. It is the perfect place for a group. The facility is entirely attractive and comfortable – the beds are comfortable, the chairs are comfortable, the couches are comfortable. There is plenty of room to accommodate group dinners and activities. At the same time there is plenty of room for quiet and seclusion. What could be better than 3 ½ baths!

The situation, in the woods with spectacular views of the island-studded bay, is the perfect place for nature lovers with a bent for comfort. Bird song fills the air during the daylight hours and, weather permitting, stars dominate the night. Eagle Cliff is close to all of the activities in Acadia where you can kayak, hike and bike to your content (rentals available in Bar Harbor less than a mile away). Or you can just sit on the balcony and watch the tides roll in and out. We did both.

Of the many wonderful accommodations at Eagle Cliff, perhaps the best was the kitchen. There were 9 – 12 of us for dinner each night. I have done cooking cottage vacations for many, many years, sometimes disastrously due to inadequate knives, pots and cooking aids. Hands done, Eagle Cliff is the best-appointed kitchen I have ever found. It has good knives AND a knife sharpener. And if you think you might want to buy some lobster and cook it up for a big group, there are plenty of large pots. And there is every thing you need from to cook your food from spices to cooking oil. In short, it is a cook’s kitchen with plenty of room for a whole family of sous chefs.

Eagle Cliff does not feel like a rental property. When we were there, we felt like we were visiting the home of an important distant relative with welcoming style and a fantastic and eclectic love of art. It is a place that accommodates memorable family adventures in a beautiful comfortable setting. We had a great time and give it our highest recommendation.

A beautiful respite for weary souls.

  • 5 of 5

Our large family thoroughly enjoyed our time at Eagles Cliff. Some folks spent time exploring the woods and water front, others enjoyed the solitude of reading a good book in a relaxing atmosphere, while others enjoyed the convenience of being close to Bar Harbor and Aracadia Park for daily jaunts. What a great place to recharge those batteries for life in the fast lane!

Elegant, inspiring, secluded, convenient

  • 5 of 5

We could not believe our luck to stay in this beautiful home for the first week in September. The weather was perfect; it was quiet; the view was magnificent. While we were there we saw deer every day, sighted a fox several times, and saw a bald eagle twice (on the first day). This is a magical spot, at the end of the road, perched above Compass Harbor, surrounded by trails and wildlife. The dawn over Frenchman's Bay is worth seeing from the terrace, where you feel as if there are no other houses around. It's hard to believe that you are only two minutes from town. The interior is beautifully appointed with works of art, comfy furnishings, and all the kitchen supplies you could possibly need. Staying here was sheer heaven.

Owner's Response: Laurie, how delightful you were able to see all the wildlife that frequents the woods on the Eagle Cliff estate and surrounding Acadia National Park. I heard there was a mother fox whose daily trail ran right past the kitchen window and that she was seen almost everyday all summer long. The pair of eagles have been nesting on the island right in front of the house for many many years, thus the name given to the house in the early 1900's "Eagle Cliff". They feed from the cliff that the property sits on overlooking Frenchman Bay. It was a pleasure to met you and certainly look forward to having you stay with us again. The location of this house is perfect. At the end of a small private road through Acadia National Park, Eagle Cliff is only one mile from Bar Harbor where you can access a free shuttle bus that travels around greater Mount Desert Island and through Acadia National Park. The main auto entrance to Acadia National Park is only two miles away where you can drive or bike the famous Park Loop Rd and all its attractions.

The Park’s newest trail, built in 2008, allows one to literally walk from the house into the 130-mile network of hiking trails, bike to the 45 miles of Carriage Roads, or simply stroll into town for an ice cream cone. Compass Cove, a little known parcel of Acadia National Park, is just a 5 min walk to a secluded and well-protected sand beach and tide pools. This area is a wonderful place to explore with kids, or have a quiet sun-drenched beach all to your self.

A special property sure to please even the most discerning tastes with the perfect blend of quiet and accessibility, historic charm and modern comfort.
