5 studios with everything from a great view to a complimentary glass of Port
Five superbly equipped and decorated studio apartments with everything you need to make your stay truly comfortable. Details like extra thick doors and windows guarantee both comfort and safety. You even have a choice of pillows to help you get a good night's sleep. The rooms have twin beds which can be joined together, a private bathroom, kitchenette and access to a romantic garden. A generous welcome pack is supplied.
The house has been beautifully restored, and guests have the benefit of incredibly thick old stone walls and ceilings criss-crossed with original wooden beams, combined with the most modern comforts such as wi-fi internet access, and all presented with a level of taste and luxury that is rare to find in tourist accommodation. Here, you'll feel so pampered that it'll be really hard to go out to explore the city. But you must, of course, and Casa dos Guindais is perfectly placed for you to be able to see all the best the city has to offer.
And although Porto is a city of steep hills, there's even a funicular railway a few steps from the front door, so you can ride in comfort down to the riverside.
Casa dos Guindais was once a family house, the home many generations who have lived there since the 18th century. The latest in the line is the present owner, Francisca Pestana da Silva, and her husband Álvaro Marques de Aguiar, who decided to transform it into a 5-star lodge to enable others to share its beauty and special location, now that the family has moved away. They both have different professional backgrounds, in arts marketing and aviation respectively, and say ”The diversity of our life experiences helps us to deal with the multicultural visitors that are now coming to Porto. We hope we meet our guests' expectations, and make their stay a pleasant memory for years to come”.
The house has 5 independent studio apartments equipped with everything that is essential to make guests feel at home. The detail in the construction guarantees both comfort and safety, and a thoroughly satisfying aesthetic experience too. The building was restored to its original splendour by architects Sofia Marques de Aguiar and Ernesto Jimenes, and preserves some of the old elements while introducing more modern, simple lines. They used prominent materials that respect the rules of conservation of historic buildings in the city - wood, glass, iron and granite, and the result is a building that is light and airy, and makes the most of modern technology and building techniques to provide a safe, quiet and luxurious environment. The restoration has created a welcoming environment with a simple, modern decor, but it also includes some antique furniture made by local craftsmen, with a lot of small touches of elegance that give the place a very special atmosphere.
Besides its location, Francisca and Álvaro provide a comprehensive selection of guides, maps and leaflets to help visitors make the most of their visit to Porto. More importantly, they are available and keen to share with their guests the extensive insight and knowledge of the city that has been the home of their families for centuries.

Very clean and great location
We enjoyed our 3 nights stay. The negative is, there is no air conditioning. We had the Pateo room which was very lovely and private, however it is in the lowest level and felt a little damp. Not sure I would stay here in the summer months. Other than that it was great!
Best place to stay in Porto
This was our second stay here and it did not disappoint. Álvaro is the perfect host, friendly, professional and a fluent Englush speaker. His restaurant recommendations were excellent and everything about the apartments reflects his aim to provide a great experience. Studios are compact but thoughtfully planned with everything you need to be comfortable fir a short break. I very much hope to go back to Porto, which is a lovely city with so much to see and do close at hand. I would not consider staying anywhere else , it's easy to get to by public transport with the perfect host, go and enjoy
Ideal base with a warm welcome
This was our first trip to Porto and we are so glad we chose to stay here. The arrangements were very easy, Álvaro responded promptly and his English is excellent.
The studios are close to the metro and within walking distance of all that Porto has to offer. We stayed in Douro which has a view of the small garden and was spacious and well equipped.
Álvaro had plenty of tips to make our stay enjoyable, his restaurant recommendations were spot on. There are many small cafes very close at hand and more than you could visit in a months stay within 10 minutes walk. The port lodges are a short walk across the dramatic bridge, and if you are too tired to walk back up the steps from Ribeira, the funicular stop is within view of the apartment.I would recommend this rental without hesitation and I hope to return soon.
This 18th century house is perfectly positioned in the heart of the historic centre of Porto, by the mediaeval Fernandina city wall that dates back to 1370, the 12th century Cathedral and the Guindais funicular that was brought back into service 10 years ago. It's hard to imagine a better location for a relaxed weekend or short break in Porto - it's close to everything worth visiting and has a fantastic view when you simply want to rest on your balcony or in the garden. The street takes you down some steep steps to the River Douro (or you can take the funicular), to the lively Ribeiro area, full of picturesque shops, bars and restaurants, and to the famous double deck D.Luis I Bridge. Across the river are the Port Wine Lodges that offer guided tours and wine tastings. At the top of the hill, and only a couple of minutes away, are the Cathedral, the S. João National Theatre, the renowned Art nouveau Café Majestic and the Santa Catarina shopping district. São Bento Railway Station, the main city square and Nasoni’s Clérigos Tower easily reachable by foot.
