You even have a choice of pillows to help you get a good night's sleep. The rooms have twin beds which can be joined together, a private bathroom, kitchenette and access to a romantic garden. A generous welcome pack is supplied.
The house has been beautifully restored, and guests have the benefit of incredibly thick old stone walls and ceilings criss-crossed with original wooden beams, combined with the most modern comforts such as wi-fi internet access, and all presented with a level of taste and luxury that is rare to find in tourist accommodation. Here, you'll feel so pampered that it'll be really hard to go out to explore the city. But you must, of course, and Casa dos Guindais is perfectly placed for you to be able to see all the best the city has to offer.
And although Porto is a city of steep hills, there's even a funicular railway a few steps from the front door, so you can ride in comfort down to the riverside.
Casa dos Guindais was once a family house, the home many generations who have lived there since the 18th century. The latest in the line is the present owner, Francisca Pestana da Silva, and her husband Álvaro Marques de Aguiar, who decided to transform it into a 5-star lodge to enable others to share its beauty and special location, now that the family has moved away. They both have different professional backgrounds, in arts marketing and aviation respectively, and say ”The diversity of our life experiences helps us to deal with the multicultural visitors that are now coming to Porto. We hope we meet our guests' expectations, and make their stay a pleasant memory for years to come”.
The house has 5 independent studio apartments equipped with everything that is essential to make guests feel at home. The detail in the construction guarantees both comfort and safety, and a thoroughly satisfying aesthetic experience too. The building was restored to its original splendour by architects Sofia Marques de Aguiar and Ernesto Jimenes, and preserves some of the old elements while introducing more modern, simple lines. They used prominent materials that respect the rules of conservation of historic buildings in the city - wood, glass, iron and granite, and the result is a building that is light and airy, and makes the most of modern technology and building techniques to provide a safe, quiet and luxurious environment. The restoration has created a welcoming environment with a simple, modern decor, but it also includes some antique furniture made by local craftsmen, with a lot of small touches of elegance that give the place a very special atmosphere.
Besides its location, Francisca and Álvaro provide a comprehensive selection of guides, maps and leaflets to help visitors make the most of their visit to Porto. More importantly, they are available and keen to share with their guests the extensive insight and knowledge of the city that has been the home of their families for centuries.
