About Diane

I am a traveler and adventurer. I have visited and stayed in almost all of Central America. I have done outreach programs in some of them.

I moved here from Kennebunkport Maine after selling because my daughter lives here after graduating from COA and teaching now. I am involved in the community and love the seasons except winter.

I have been very fortunate to have had the tenants that have stayed in my home. Some have come back for 5 years now. I am easy to get along with and go out of my way to help some. I know how important vacations are for families.

Why Diane chose Bar Harbor

I love living on the Indian Point Road just 13 minutes to the center of town. I don't like crowds and this fits the spot for me. It is like country and quieter but so close to things. People love to bike this road and I love to walk my daughter's dog to the bay. I love to garden and proud to have these values and there is a farmer's market on Fridays just a few minute from my home. A country store that has everything along with ice cream. My tenants find it very clean and comfortable and have a good time.

What makes this house unique

I choose this property to build my home on because it was away from the crowds but easy to access all the other villages on the Island. I had room for a garden and enjoy landscaping.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spent a week at Deer Run mid of June this year. Immediately when you drive on the property you are struck by how nice everything is and the when you open the door to the home you will realize that it has been furnished with care and is very clean. Everything we needed was there. The location was perfect for us, quiet, near a trail and a quick drive to all park entrances and downtown Bar Harbor. The owner has a studio apartment above the garage on the property. She is very nice and concerned that all guests have a wonderful time. She was never intrusive only very helpful whenever we had a question. In fact we would have loved to spend more time with her. We brought our 5 year old son and he had a blast. We had a great first visit to Maine and are happy we stumbled across this cottage.

Hopefully this time it took my review. I apologize for the delay. Please let me know if it made it through and the 3rd time is a charm.

Perfect Home Away from Home!

  • 5 of 5

We chose Deer Run based on the reviews of previous tenants and we weren't disappointed. The home is clearly well cared for and in a very clean state. We arrived early, running ahead and away (we hoped) of Hurricane Irene, to find the owner, Diane, tending to the lovely garden ahead of the storm. She very graciously allowed us occupy the property earlier than agreed and we quickly settled in. After a week in a very beautiful but more rustic location, Deer Run was the perfect compliment to our Maine vacation. Everything is as advertised or better and Diane went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and at home.

As for the location, it is nicely placed on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island. Although we visited Bar Harbor on several occasions, we didn't want to stay there because of the crowds (you may want to avoid it when the cruise ships are in). After all it's not far by car ( ~20 mins). There is a free bus to much of the Island, but you have to connect in Bar Harbor and we thought that it was too time consuming. There is so much to do on MDI but our favorites were hiking the national park trails, sunrise on Cadillac Mountain (dress warm and don't think for a minute you're the only one with the same idea!), whale watching, and eating out. Our favorite restaurants were Havana (expensive but fantastic!), Two Cats (wonderful breakfast), and the West Street Cafe (good, inexpensive lunch).

You can see our star rating but if you asked, "Would you go out of your way to stay at Deer Run again?" The answer would be "Yes!"

Owner's Response: It was a joy to have this family stay at my home and I liked to hear about there daily adventures. Before flying overseas Sharon and the girls stopped at the Portland Mall shopping for college. They are now both stricken with "Empty Nest" feelings. What a beautiful family.

Perfect

Perfect stay. The house is very clean and up to date. It is in a quiet area which is perfect for relaxing after spending the day at Acadia. The house has a nice back porch to sit on and listen to the birds first thing in the morning.

Deer Run is the perfect place to stay on Mt. Desert Island

  • 5 of 5

Deer Run in reality is every bit as nice as the photos. The house is attractive and easy on it's surroundings, very thoughtfully furnished and well supplied for your needs. Diane, the owner lives in an adjacent house, but is not at all intrusive. She was available to answer questions, to make suggestions if asked, but was rarely seen. She is an avid gardener and the yard bears witness to that. The lilacs were in bloom when we were there and I loved smelling them through the kitchen screen door.

I enjoy cooking, even on vacation so I purchased clams, scallops and lobsters from the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound which is close by. The house is equipped with crab/lobster crackers, picks and pots big enough to do the job , as well as the standard equipment that every cook needs. My only suggestion is to bring a good garlic press as the one in the house is not very good and you need lots of lemons and garlic with all that seafood!

The house is on a fairly busy street, so you do hear some road noise, but I didn't find it to be a problem and I'm used to a quiet house. The master bedroom is quiet, but you do hear more road noise from the room with twin beds. It would work well for kids, I would think. It was really handy having a washer/dryer as we did a lot of hiking and were able to bring fewer clothes knowing that we had the availability of a washer.

In addition to the incredible hiking, we toured several gardens (the Asticou Azalea Gardens and Thuya Gardens) visited the Gilley Museum (a must if you're into birds) and rented kayaks from the National Park Kayak Rentals (despite the name I don't think they are part of the Park Service) to kayak Long Pond. We enjoyed the carriage road system and would encourage visitors to try these unique roads and bridges that were constructed with money and vision provided by John D. Rockefeller Jr.

In terms of food, when not stuffing our faces with seafood at home, we enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Asticou Inn where we ate outside with a view of the water. It's a bit pricey but worth a splurge. We also enjoyed the Colonel's in Northeast Harbor and Gaylen's in Bar Harbor.

We hope to return and hope that Deer Run is available when we make another trip.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very thoughtful review. The most important thing to me is that you were comfortable, have a very clean home and enjoyed your stay. You seemed to have visited some of the highlights on the Island and I love the Asticou Inn also. I would love to have you as a guest again, so please feel free to look me up again if you are ever back this way. Regards, Diane

Lovely home in quiet, serene setting

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our entire experience on Mount Desert Island and our stay at this lovely home. The house was very well maintained and spotlessly clean, and the grounds/gardens were beautiful. The location was close to the visitor center for Acadia National Park; we drove there most days and took the Island Explorer shuttle to various hiking destinations. While we enjoyed the Bar Harbor restaurants, it was nice to be located on the quiet side of the island, away from the crowds. We hope to come back soon!

This home is within easy access to Acadia National Park with hiking trails and over 50 miles of carriage roads for biking. If you prefer, utilize the Island Explorer, a free eco-friendly bus shuttle service which is within walking distance to explore the village of Bar Harbor. There is also a nice 15 walk to the bay just 100 ft from my home and a pebble beach at low tide. Brewery with restaurant just 1 min away and a wonderful bakery with sandwiches, and a market.

There is a fresh water lake with sand beach about 3 miles away and lots of shopping to do on those rainy days or sit and relax and do nothing. We also have Kebo Valley Golf Course with a full pro shop and clubhouse restaurant on the Island.
