Beautiful home with wonderful hosts!!

Beverly and Joe Kirkland were so welcoming and gracious to us. Their home is cozy and beautiful. And the bed was absolutely amazing! Anyone should count themselves extremely blessed to stay with them!

Head AND heart

  • 5 of 5

"A place to lay your head"...what the dear hosts call their offering of a sweet room and private bath. But we found a place to lay our heads and hearts, too. Though they were willing to let us enjoy any privacy we wanted they were open to be company, too. And what sweet company, especially with Christmas in the air. Chocolate chip cookies and muffins in the ready! Close enough to town wth all it's art and yummies... and a perfect recommendation to eat at Fresh Pizza. (Don't miss it).

I would like to 'rest' here again! body and soul.

About Beverly and Joe Kirkland

We are a professional couple who love hosting family, friends, and now guests on our unique property just minutes from Black Mountain. Joe, an administrator at Montreat College, swims 45 minutes every morning and after work and on weekends (when we're not traveling or doting on 11 grandchildren) works on the "treehouse" at the end of our gravel driveway. He's also an avid shell collector, which will hopefully find a home in said treehouse when it's finished! Bev, energized by her 100+ middle schoolers, spends lots of time reading and writing in preparation for her English classes, works out at the local gym, runs a 5K occasionally with her grandchildren, and does a lot of creative planning and puttering around the house. We love RVing out to the beach, traveling abroad, and hosting large groups of family and friends on our little postage stamp-sized piece of the world.

Beverly and Joe Kirkland purchased this house in 2007

Why Beverly and Joe Kirkland chose Black Mountain

We honeymooned in the Blue Ridge Mountains forever ago and returned for vacations many times. We were thrilled when one of our sons attended, graduated, and was employed by Montreat College--and got his dad a job there! Our daughter-in-law found the house for us--one of the oldest and most charming farmhouses in the area. We love small town living--no traffic to speak of, chatting with friends at the hardware store, knowing half the people at the local theater production, strolling through town and festivals like tourists. We are so blessed, so grateful and we want to share our blessings with our guests.

What makes this house unique

This little house is packed with personality. As you leave I-40 and head up a gentle hill, you'll see the house, almost exactly as it looked in 1909. Enter through a side entrance into the dining area furnished with antiques and family pieces. The private guest room and bath are straight ahead. When the hosts head upstairs, you'll have the downstairs to yourselves. Then head to the ship-shape kitchen with lots to look at--unique pantries, checkerboard pine floors, and a reclaimed wood island. Here you'll find snacks, bottled water, hot drinks, morning muffins. The living room/sunroom combo boasts a small fireplace and plenty of seating. The screen porch is perfectly set for 3 season views of Rattlesnake Mtn.

Car: necessary

Some of the regions best hiking is right out our back door. Charming downtown Black Mtn. is 2 miles, and Asheville and Biltmore Estate are an easy 15-20 minutes down I-40. Catawba Falls is one exit away. Montreat College is 10 minutes, and you can walk to Ridgecrest Conference Center and its two camps. Need more room? Check out our adjoining property, Outback Cabin, that sleeps 6.
