The Mermaids House:
The Mermaids House is the perfect West Marin getaway. Located on the waterfront of pristine Tomales Bay, it is an ideal spot to relax and unwind. The house is literally built out over the water, so there is nothing between you and the picturesque Point Reyes National Seashore as you gaze out through the giant glass windows.
The Mermaids House offers amazing views of the abundant birdlife that inhabits Tomales Bay and it is not uncommon to spot a seal or two swimming by to say, "hello." The house, nautically themed, creates the illusion that you are traveling aboard a lavish ship, without the seasickness of course. The spacious interior of the house has an air of tasteful class while maintaining a cozy rustic feel.
Complete with a grassy front yard, large deck with a hot tub, and its own pier, the Mermaids House is also well equipped for outdoor living. Whether you spend your time in West Marin hiking in the park, kayaking on the bay, or just relaxing, the Mermaids House is the perfect setting to enjoy some world famous oysters, have a drink, and look out across the bay as the sun sets.
Amenities: Jacuzzi/jet outdoor spa, gas log fireplace, Wi-Fi (wireless internet), phone (free long distance within the continental US), 32" Sharp flat screen satellite TV, stereo/CD player, fully equipped kitchen, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, barbecue, deck tables and chairs, teakwood "steamer" reclining deck chairs. *(No smoking. This was a perfect place to unwind and relax – just what we needed! Had a stormy weekend - but it was cozy in here! Thanks for providing such a beautiful, peaceful get-away.
My husband & I have been coming to the Mermaid House for over 4 years now. We have the luxury of having come 2-4 time/year and we adore this property! We have stayed in both sides of the home - the Admiral's Quarters and the Crew Quarters and we love both. If you want to decompress from life's stresses and replenish in a tranquil, beautiful place - this is it. The home sits on the Tomales Bay with the water lapping under the deck. We sit for hours on the deck & in the hot tub watching birds and an occasion seal popping their head up to look at us, listening to the water and when the wind is right, the roar of the ocean coming over the peninsula.
Both units have comfortable beds and living spaces and the essentials that one needs in the kitchen. The views are spectacular from both units and the Admiral's Quarters has floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel like you are on the bay! One should note that the Crew's Quarters has a loft with a steep ladder.
Once we have regained our center, we walk to Hog Island Oyster and indulge! Best oysters we have EVER had! Right next door! Walk in the other direction to the Marshall Store and Blue Waters Kayaking. There is plenty to do in the area. We have kayaked, hiked, and biked. It is a short drive to Point Reyes and then a little further to the national seashore, the beaches, lighthouse, and our favorite - Tomales Point, Pierce Point Ranch. A wonderful hike where you have sweeping views of both the pacific and the bay and you can see the Tule Elk herd. It is truly a wonderful place for outdoor adventure. The bird-watching is spectacular. If you get lucky, you can swim at night in Drake's Bay with bioluminescence.
It is a short drive to Petaluma and not too much further to Napa/Sonoma wine country.
Fred and Karen, the owners of this wonderful place been very responsive and take care of this place meticulously.
My wife is a big adventurer and traveler. Unless a place/destination is exceptional, her rule of thumb is to only visit once. She enjoyed our time at the Mermaid House so much that we'll be back.
We arrived to crashing waves under the house, at once a little shocking but paradoxically, restful. We both got one of the best sleeps of the spring! The view is unparalleled-- on the water-- an easy place to read and nap, the kitchen well appointed. The house is creatively furnished, nautical, with good restaurants nearby. We loved our stay.
My husband and I loved our stay at Mermaid's House. The view from the windows is spectacular. The house is charmingly decorated and appropriately nautical. There's lots of good places to curl up and read and also have a great view of the bay. I would definitely stay there again.
We have stayed at the Mermaids House 7 times in the past 8 years and absolutely love it. It is the perfect getaway. Very comfortable, very elegantly appointed but with a very cozy warm feel. The kitchen setup is easy to use and we always cook when we are there.
The view is gorgeous, sitting on the deck is so peaceful. Being out over the water is the best. We love it every time regardless of the weather or time of year.
The owner is very helpful and gracious. We plan to continue to visit there at least once a year.
My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at The Mermaid House in March 2012. After spending a week in St Helena we wanted to end our vacation in a special place to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We were SO happy we chose The Mermaid House. The owners were wonderful as we contacted them before our arrival andthey had a fishing pole ready for my husband to use upon arrival! The house is more than we imagined, wonderful decor- unbelievable views - you are right on the water! We found something new each of the 3 days we were there. The weather was a bit cool but did not stop us from our daily hot tub/glass of wine on the deck. We enjoyed dinner (fresh oysters bought right down the road) at the dining room table nightly overlooking the water. We took a drive to the Pt Reyes National Seashore and enjoyed stopping in Tomales Bay. Very quite area, just what we were looking for. Looking forward to making this a yearly stop!
