About Jim & Diana Rice
I am originally from North Carolina and Diana is from New York and we met and married in South Florida. Its the classic tale of country boy meets city girl and the rest is history. We have 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren who we love spending time with. We enjoy nature and the great outdoors which is the main reason that we purchased Doublehead Mountain Retreat and the more than 100 acres of wild mountain land around it.
Jim & Diana Rice purchased this Cabin in 2004
Why Jim & Diana Rice chose Newland
While growing up in a small North Carolina town as a child we took frequent trips to the NC mountains to enjoy the cool mountain air as well as the endless activities including fishing, hiking, caving and tubing -rafting down the numerous area rivers. When I first saw this property and Its seclusion I knew that this would be the place that our family would enjoy and make many memories. We are within walking distance to several caves, waterfalls and stocked trout streams as well as being able to enjoy our own 2 acre pond right in front of our cabin. Our cabin is also a short drive to many of the High Country attractions including Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, Mount Mitchell( Highest Elevation east of the Mississippi River), Beech and Sugar Mountain Ski Resorts and many white water rafting and ziplining excursions.
What makes this Cabin unique
The reason I love this place is the seclusion and remoteness of this property. Although there are a few other cabins in the area you cant see any from our cabin. We are not in a development not subject to any rules and regulations~Jim To be able to unplug and decompress in nature without WiFI/Internet (I begged Jim not to have a TV, but I lost that fight...lol) puts life back into perspective and grounds you to what`s really important in life, being one with our Creator through the amazing natural creations that we take for granted and to truly connect w/ your love ones in peace and tranquility. Plus it is a great place to write and take nature pictures!!~Diana

Wonderful place to get away.
This was the first time renting a property and the process was easy and efficient.
We enjoyed every minute of our stay at this cabin. It was clean, comfortable, roomy with all we needed. We loved the openness and space to be outside and walk the trails and the dogs could run and play or just lay on the porch. We would love to come again. We did use the four wheel drive to get up the hill and had no problems.
Amazing getaway with the pups!
We had an incredible time at this retreat! We enjoyed fishing in the pond everyday, fires at night, and our pups loved all the room to play! We can't wait got to plan our next trip!
Very secluded peaceful property. Owner responded very promptly
We choose Double Head Mountain to celebrate our 20th anniversary. It was just what we wanted: secluded with plenty of possibilities for amusement in the property. We went for a four-hour hike on the mountain, enjoyed boating on the pond, and relaxed in the hot tub. The house had everything we needed, and it felt like we were staying at Grandma's house - cozy with the warmth of country living.
We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at our retreat. We strive to make it unforgettable and hope to see you again.

Absolutely Charming Retreat
We absolutely loved our stay here! It is a very secluded and peaceful location but still close enough to vineyards and the charming town of Banner Elk. We were looking for an escape from the heat and found it. The cabin itself was well equipped and we found ourselves loving the seasoned cast iron pan.
The whole experience was amazing. We brought two small dogs who enjoyed playing and running around the property. We roasted hotdogs over the fire pit for lunch. The boat was relaxing and we even saw a few water friends on our outing. We saw deer, rabbits, birds and a very friendly frog who hung out with us on the porch.
The cabin even had a DVD player and Direct TV, we also completed one of the puzzles we found. The hot tub was perfect and we loved relaxing in it after playing on the grounds all day. The wild flowers were plentiful and made for a beautiful scene.
The whole trip was better than expected and we will be back soon. We only live an hour from the property and are already planning our next getaway, this time with friends. I would 100% recommend this rental, you will not be disappointed. This would be gorgeous any season.
We appreciate the kind words and glowing review! Were glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you come back for a visit.
