Bantham is situated at the mouth of the River Avon in Bigbury Bay and has one of the best surfing beaches on the South Coast only a few minutes walk from Sheriffs.
In 2015 The Lonely Planet Guide listed the best 10 beaches in Europe. Bantham was the only one in the UK!!
Children find it has perfect 'sandcastle' golden sand. Hours of enjoyment can be had at low tide in the many rock-pools that are revealed. Full time Lifeguards are on duty from May to September.
The area has a lot to offer. Two Golf Courses nearby are Thurlestone (1 mile) and Bigbury (7 miles)
The boating folk will love the estuary. Bantham Quay is only 5 minutes walk from Sherriffs and fishing can be enjoyed in the river and at sea.
The pretty village has the well known Sloop Inn with its good restaurant (booking advisable), a village shop with river view cafe during May to September and school half term holidays. Refreshments are also available close to the beach for that 'after swim and surfing' reviver.
There are wonderful walks along the coastal footpath, east to Thurlestone, Hope Cove, Salcombe and beyond, and west using the ferry over the Avon (operating from May to September every day except Sunday).
Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Dartmouth and Totnes are within easy reach and offer a great variety of shops and attractions.
The property is a ground floor apartment with a sizeable garden. There are 3 Bedrooms. One double room with French door to the patio overlooking the river. One Twin bedded room with a basin and en-suite shower and an additional pull-out bed and a third bedroom with one single bed and two bunks.
There is a family bathroom with a shower over the bath, basin and toilet. There is also a separate toilet and basin.
The dining area is designed to seat 8 people and has a view over the garden to the river. The kitchen is separated from the dining area by a bar and has an electric cooker, dishwasher, large fridge, microwave, toaster and all the equipment that you would expect to find in a holiday home.
The dining area leads into the conservatory which looks out over the patio and garden to the river.
There are night store heaters throughout the apartment.
There is a separate laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer and a small chest freezer.
The patio is equipped with dining table and chairs for 8 people.
The garden has an extensive lawn and steps that lead down through the well maintained and attractive garden to a beautiful wide path that goes down to Bantham Quay.

super accomodation in a great location
We had a wonderful stay at Sherriffs. The apartment was more than adequate for 4 adults and 3 children. The garden was beautiful with a lovely view of the river. Comfortable and well- equipped, we found everything we needed to cook and eat some of the wonderful local produce on offer from nearby towns. A short walk to some of the most stunning beaches was an added bonus. I highly recommend and look forward to booking this place again soon. Many thanks to our hosts, Liz and Roger.
Sherriffs, Bantham, Devon.
This was our ninth year at Sherriffs, and once again we had a lovely time. The cottage is well equippped with a secure garden for children. Five minute walk to a beautiful beach and the coastal paths. What more could one ask for!
We loved our stay at Sheriffs. Bantham is a real paradise, the beach so peaceful and beautiful and the town so nice. The owners were extra helpful and nice and everything was just as promised. We would recommend Sheriffs to anyone
Thank you for your very kind comments.
You are right Bantham is a very special place. I have known the village for over 60 years and can truly say that virtually nothing has changed over that period. It is really unspoiled and there are very few place about which that can honestly be said.
I know it must have been a great change from Iceland but I am delighted that your particular requirements were met.
Another great Golf Tour based on Sherriffs
Sherriffs does precisely what it says on the box, and it really is the ideal base for both young and old to explore and enjoy the South Hams and beyond.
Our group of six golfers returned for yet another year, playing Thurlestone; Bigbury; St Mellion, and East Devon in our shirtsleeves.
The local pub (the 'Sloop') serves great food and the Village Stores can top-up most essentials. The Village Inn in Thurlestone has just been completely re-fitted to a very high standard, and for a complete contrast try 'The Beach House' on South Milton Sands for a memorable lunch or supper.
Can't recommend Sherriffs highly enough. We golfers have booked in for the same time next year!.
Perfect location and set up for a peaceful holiday
This was not my first visit to the property and it was as pristine as ever. The set up with plenty of beds and bathrooms works really well. The Sloop opposite is exceedingly friendly with plenty of locals and other visitors. The food is first rate with lots of fish as you would expect. Bantham is a great base for family beach holidays, golf, or just sightseeing. Sitting on the terrace with a drink at the end the day can't be beaten, always something to see on the estuary or Bigbury Golf Course. Very highly recommended. Ps Also very comfortable beds too!
The perfect place for our golfing holiday
Sherriffs is in an idyllic position, looking across the river estuary to Bigbury Golf Course. It is very well appointed with a superb conservatory where you can sit and simply watch the tide roll in and out, if that takes your fancy.
It is also ideally situated for visiting other local courses, such as Thurlestone, and those not so local, for instance the challenging Nicklaus Course at St Mellion. So that's we golfers well provided for, but there is a whole lot more going on.
A morning stroll round the Ham justifies the consumption of the full English breakfast at the Sloop Inn, only 50 yards away. The Sloop also serves as an ideal place to have dinner, ruling out all the usual problems over who is going to drive! The menu is interesting and varied. Landlord Rob will also supply a take-away service if you prefer to eat at the house.
For those with deep pockets a visit to the Treby Arms at Sparkford is a real thrill. Just forget about the cost and indulge yourself in MasterChef level cooking.
If fresh seafood is your thing, walk around to the Beach Hut at South Milton Sands for a lively experience of local produce.
For the surfers of this world the beach is not far away, with a Surfing Academy and Lifeguards on duty.
Burgh Island continues to hold a fascination for all who visit it. Dartmouth, Salcombe, Modbury and Kingsbbridge are all within a short drive and worth a visit. National Trust members will benefit from various Trust properties in the area.
If you it in all the things to see and do in the area in short holiday you will return exhausted, but happy. We certainly did, but could still play better golf!!
