nice place, close to beach, very helpful hosts
Everything as described on the website,
clean and well-maintained property, appartment with a big terrace and nice view. Very nice and friendly hosts, hostess speaking a really good English. We received everything we asked for. Nice village, not far from Vieste, Foresta Umbra, S. Giovani Rotondo, Monte s. Angello and other interesting places. Possible boat trips along sea caves and to Tremiti Islands. Fine beach, not crowded. Village is not a big resort: less crowded and cheaper. It is a long way from my home (2 000 km.) but I would like to come back.
Alina e Stefano.
Foce Varano is a coastal seaside resort in the Gargano National Park (fraction of Ischitella) which stands on the isthmus of land that divides Varano Lake from the Adriatic Sea.
Once a fishing village, today with its low houses overlooking the sea and the characteristic tourist port it has become a pleasant seaside destination that offers the right combination of sea, nature, relaxation and fun. It enjoys a cycle path that runs along the sea, two playgrounds, several restaurants, markets, bars, a pharmacy. Furthermore, from August 2012, in the summer months, the bike sharing service is active. The Varano Lake Triathlon has been held in Foce Varano since 2012.
Continuing along the coast you will find the strip of sand that delimits Lake Varano dividing it from the sea: it is the ISLAND OF VARANO with the State Reserve of Varano inside characterized by the presence of numerous animal species and the typical Mediterranean scrub. Exposed to the north and dominated by northern winds, Foce Varano is ideal for those who love water sports and fishing. Foce Varano also boasts a central position that allows you to easily reach the main tourist attractions, in fact it is 6km from Rodi Garganico, 12 km from Ischitella, 15 km from Carpino, 17km from Vico del Gargano, 18 miles from the Tremiti Islands, 20 km from Peschici 40 from vieste.
A stay on the Gargano cannot be separated from an excursion to the Tremiti Islands and the Umbra Forest, the two greatest expressions of the virgin nature of the Gargano, and a boat ride along the coast, enhanced by the fantastic sea caves. A visit is also a must to the characteristic historical centers and sanctuaries of San Michele Arcangelo in Monte Sant’Angelo and San Pio da Pietrelcina in San Giovanni Rotondo
In the heart of the Gargano, the Umbra Forest extends for about 4000 hectares. What most strikes those who visit the infinite paths of the forest is the majesty of a place where time seems to have stopped. The branches of the imposing secular trees intertwine in a dense shady net that only rarely lets rays of the sun pass through.
With adventurous jeep or bike tours or cheerful horseback riding you can appreciate the variety of the flora of the Umbrian Forest rich in centuries-old beeches and Turkey oaks, oaks and hornbeams, maples and yews and discover in silence the animal species that populate this area: it won't be difficult to see a Gargano roe deer running or wild pigs feeding on acorns.
The pond of the Umbra Forest, moreover, with the green trees that surround it, offers a romantic scenery to visitors even in winter, when everything is covered with snow.
THE CAVES OF THE GARGANO
For those who want to know the promontory in a new guise, an unusual marine itinerary will offer you everything the mermaids love to watch from the Gargano. Getting lost in the magical atmospheres of the many sea caves on the coast means experiencing deep emotions.
The Grotta Sfondata Grande, for example, offers a vision that is lost in the sky: the gaze towards the upper opening allows you to glimpse the pines rooted in the rocks which are skillfully reflected in the transparency of the sea; the Grotta Campana Grande also rises imposingly from the sea for almost 50 meters in height with a suggestive bell shape.
The red of the Grotta dei Pomodori, however, is due to the typical molluscs that with their shape similar to tomatoes surround the walls of the cave giving it a cheerful and original appearance. The atmosphere of the Grotta dei Due Occhi is also fantastic: the two openings on the top of the cave, like two large eyes open the view towards the blue sky.
What still attracts mermaids to the Gargano coast are the characteristic Trabucchi: these ancient wooden fishing machines protrude suspended over the sea with a characteristic shape at the end of which a narrow-meshed net is attached. Today more than ten trabucchi arranged between the coast connecting Peschici and Vieste, represent the symbol of a maritime tradition that the Gargano still preserves.
But the Gargano promontory also has numerous marine sighting towers that have been inserted in some places on the coast not for strictly defensive purposes, but for signaling the danger of invasions by Saracen pirates. Definitely not to be missed is a visit to the Torre di Monte Pucci, between Calenella and Peschici, to the Torre di San Felice, between Vieste and Mattinata and to the Mileto Tower, on the road between the lakes of Varano and Lesina to experience a holiday made also of historical traditions of the Gargano.
Finally, do not miss a gastronomic itinerary. The Gargano tables are, in fact, an interesting crossroads of different flavors: of the earth, the sea and the sky, whose common denominator is genuineness.
