Why Aylin Medina Bagas chose Casco Viejo
The building, Casa Marquesa de Portago, is an uniquely located just near the presidential area, colonial house build in 1573, and remodeled by the talented colombian arquitect Álvaro Barrera, transformed into commercial spaces on the ground floor, currently a delicious italian owned pizza place, one apartment on the first floor, and my penthouse on the last 3 floors. Located perfectly at the main entrance of Casco Viejo, the penthouse has a 360° view of the historical town of Casco Viejo and the skyline of Panama City separated by the stunning Pacific Ocean with views of the Causeway and Panama Canal. The contrast in architecture is mesmerising as it defines Panamas history and gives you a delicious taste of what was, is, and will be, as Panama is growing with love into one of the world's biggest hubs.

A great apartment in the Old City
We really enjoyed this apartment. The previous negative review wasn’t wrong about the loud music (we just turned on our white noise app) or a bit of outdoor shabbiness, but those were minor things, truly. The apartment is very pretty and the bathrooms were awesome and Aylin provided everything we needed. Lots of towels, which is always nice. The location is in the heart of the old city, which was great. Lots of terrific restaurants within three or four blocks. Several outdoor spaces as well; we loved those. And the pool was nice to have. There’s a queen or king in the master bedroom and then another normal bed upstairs. But there’s a big couch as well. This was a very good AirBnb in my opinion.
Poorly maintained, noisy, exterior areas neglected.
Too bad, 10 or 15 years ago this was someone's dream home. Now there are light bulbs burned out in almost every area, the handle fell off the lower shower and thus no hot water could be had, the outdoor furniture is disintegrating; only 2 usable chairs on the lower level balcony, upper level pool area none and top level patio furniture is mostly unusable with the recent addition of some 'cheap' Home Depot patio chairs (not in character with the original unique design of the upper levels). Photos urgently need to be updated and most of all, it would only be fair to prospective tenants to inform them that on the upper level you must keep the windows closed at night because within 12 feet of your bedroom door is a bartender serving the roof top lounge for the neighboring hotel .. literally eye ball to eye ball, the door opens towards the back of the bar. About 1 block away is an even worse roof top bar that on our last night blasted incredible decibel levels of boom boom boom until just past 3am .. no reason for one business to interfere in the peace and quiet of another business's guests but until some sort of decibel control is put in place in Casco Viejo that will continue to be a problem at this rental location. 3 blocks away are rentals and hotels that still do not suffer from the boom boom of roof top bars. We were told that this was the celebration of Fiestas Patrias but in speaking with other visitors in the area this particular location seems to be the one that gets it from both sides all year long ... Another down side to this address is that because the Presidential residence is a block away in the opposite direction, there is absolutely NO stopping in the street .. loading and unloading luggage must be done at the next corner up .. what a hassle that is. Finally, when I considered booking here I asked about a bathroom on the same level as the 'penthouse' bedroom (this rental is spread out over 3 floors and is two floors up from the street), did I misunderstand? .. turns out, you must leave the room ( AND get dressed if the bartender is on duty next door) go down one flight of stairs to access the bathroom at night .. a little uncomfortable for anyone who needs to relieve themselves during the night. So, even with new patio furniture the noise and bathroom situation would probably deter me from ever renting here again. Finally, Aylin & Paola, the house staff, did a wonderful job in their duties and allowed us to check out late.
Thank you for your comments.
We’ve had the maintenance issues fixed. The building is over 400 years old so it’s on going.
There are 2 bedrooms, the one you chose is in the oldest watchtower in Panamá so the washroom is down the stairs. The windows to the bathroom have an opaque coating on them so no one can see you.
The other bedroom has the washroom adjoined on the same floor.
I’m so sorry about the noise, you came during the longest, busiest holiday week in Panamá. Casco is the party and restaurant area so it can get quite rambunctious.
I’m so sorry your stay wasn’t good. We would have refunded you and helped you find a hotel right away if you’d let my host know. She’s available 24/7 to handle any issues that may arise.
Ps: we are replacing the patio furniture, just waiting for the new stuff to arrive. The chic bamboo chairs rotted out with the humidity. Thanks for your input, we are constantly trying to improve .
Great location, great property. Amazing weekend!
Holiday in Panama City
The location of this stay is ideal for seeing the old city, Casco Viejo. You are a short walk to the sea, restaurants and bars. There is a perfect coffee shop, Cafe Sucre, a few steps up the street.
The apartment is spread over 3 floors, and is located above a pizza restaurant, which is very convenient, and the make great mohitos too.
The apartment is air conditioned and comfortable. Our hostess was there to greet us, and quick to reply to our text messages.
The penthouse is at the entrance of the beautiful old center of the city, Casco Viejo, close to the new center, walking distance from many bars and restaurants, great sightseeing. Its very easy to get around, there is metro, public bus and taxis, all close by, few minutes walking distance away! Its just on Cinta Costera : The Cinta Costera (meaning Coastal Beltway) is a 26-hectare (64-acre) land reclamation project in Panama City, Panama, completed in 2009 at a cost of $189 million. It extends from Paitilla to El Chorrillo. Its most recent expansion was the Cinta Costera III, which opened in 2014, along with the Maracana Stadium.
The Cinta Costera Viaduct is part of Cinta Costera Phase III. Consisting of a roadway bridge and pedestrian bridge, the 2.5-kilometer-long marine viaduct encircles Panama City’s historic and governmental district of the Casco Antiguo. The viaduct surrounds the World Heritage Site-Archaeological Site of Panamá Viejo and Historic District of Panamá, as defined by the United Nations (UNESCO).
Casco Viejo (Spanish for Old Quarter), also known as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe, is the historic district of Panama City. Completed and settled in 1673, it was built following the near-total destruction of the original Panamá city, Panamá Viejo in 1671, when the latter was attacked by pirates. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997. Panama city was founded on August 15 of 1519 and it lasted one hundred and fifty-two years. In January 1671, the Governor Juan Perez de Guzman had it set on fire, before the attack and looting by the pirate Henry Morgan. In 1672, Antonio Fernández de Córdoba initiated the construction of a new city, which was then founded on January 21, 1673. This city was built on a peninsula completely isolated by the sea and a defensive system of walls. Today this place preserves the first institutions and buildings of the modern city of Panama. It is known as Casco Viejo (Spanish for Old Town)
