Come enjoy a relaxing vacation on the waterfront of Onancock Creek at Heartsworth Cottage, your vacation home. This charming three bedroom vacation cottage sleeps six and features a living room, full country kitchen with dining area, upstairs den and three baths. Savor the lush greenery and hidden away feeling of this cottage nestled on the creek amid native trees and plants. Enjoy the views of Onancock Creek from the inviting living room which opens onto the tri-level deck through glass sliding doors. While on the deck, laze away in the hammock or walk to the end of the dock and catch crabs or toss your fishing line. There is a paddle boat available for your use or launch your own kayak or canoes from the dock. The kitchen is complete with linens (place mats, cloth napkins, kitchen towels and cloths) plus china, glassware and flatware. You will find everything that you will need to prepare a complete meal. There is a gas grill on the deck, too. Bring your towels and bed linens.
On your arrival, the cottage will be stocked with cheese, crackers, and a bottle of wine, as well as tea, coffee, sugar and creamer. The cottage is a one mile walk to the center of town or bring your bikes and discover the ease of seeing the quaint town and surrounding areas.
From the minute you walk in the door of this wonderful cottage, you feel the stress slip away. The view from the deck is amazing. I loved the way that the owners used beautiful antiques throughout the cottage to keep with the time period of the structure. You entered the town a stranger and left feeling like you wanted to live there forever. Everyone is so friendly. The restaurants are wonderful , the shops quaint, the bakery DELICIOUS and the hospitality of the owners Joyce and Duke unsurpassed. Can't wait to return.
My mom, sister in law, her mother, and myself all enjoyed our stay at this truley charming cottage for our girls getaway. We enjoyed a weekend of not doing much of anything and this was the perfect location for a relaxing getaway! Our only wish was that they weather was warmer so we could have enjoyed the deck in evening, but we did soak up the sunshine and the beautiful view during the day! The view was stunning and I wish I could wake up and coffee on that porch every day. The house has a lot of historic charm as well, yet is up to date and provides everything you need. We enjoyed a few meals on the gas grill which was a pleasant surprise to see in a rental. We have already recommended this to family members who may be looking to get away in the future. Joyce was also very responsive to any inquiries I had. Thanks for the great experience!
Heartsworth is full of charm and beautifully decorated. Surrounded by history and nature the views are outstanding. The house itself is very comfortable and well stocked. We spent relaxing moments watching birds and the tides roll in on the deck overlooking Onancock Creek, and strolling along the field out back. Onancock is a very friendly town with a good variety of shops and restaurants. Joyce and Duke were great hosts--we had everything we needed. We will return to Heartsworth cottage!
When I booked our stay at Heartsworth Cottage it was winter and we longed to experience again the warmth and relaxation that my family and I had on our first visit to Heartsworth Cottage in the summer of 2007. Could it still hold the same comforts and welcoming magic of that long ago stay?
Dear Reader the answer is YES! Heartsworth Cottage is a dream, and more than lives up to its description as to the location, layout and amenities. We were greeted by a lovely gift basket, and newly renovated hardwood floors throughout and all the comforts of the well-appointed home that we had remembered - lovely water views from the living room, kitchen, and upstairs master bedroom with its large double window and soaring views of hundred plus year old pines which shade the large multi-level deck that overlooks the creek and that leads down to the private dock where the kayak, paddleboat, and crab trap was waiting...
Owned by The Shannahans, Joyce and Duke, whom we have met twice now obviously love this property, and they also love the town of Onancock. They made certain that we were aware of the local 4th of July Celebration and personally invited us to the Ice Cream Social and band concert at the Gazebo, and they made restaurant recommendations too. We'd forgotten to bring our towels, and Joyce graciously said, "no problem, I'll be right over with some."
My family and I really love this property and asked if the Shannahans would consider selling it and they smiled a knowing smile and demurred. Of course they must be accustomed to guests falling in love with Heartsworth Cottage - that explains the name.
My husband and I didn’t know how much we needed a rest until we got to Heartsworth Cottage. We headed out on a weeks vacation, planning on using this beautifully situated cottage as our home base.
We walked in the front door, could see the water beyond through the ceiling-to-floor French doors and windows on the other side of the room and were stunned by the beauty. We stepped out onto the huge, 3-tiered deck, went down and sat in the Adirondack chairs and didn’t move for 2 hours. In fact, we didn’t leave the home for 2 days. We just "chilled." We watched the egrets and blue herons land to feed on fish, slept in, went to the Saturday morning farmers’ market and bought crumpets for breakfast and clams for dinner, then went to the tiny, but very clean, Onancock Fish Market we’d passed on the way into town off of Rt 13 for superb crab cakes for the next night. They had all sorts of seafood there!
We headed out over the next few days to several of the good restaurants in Onancock, as well as the Island Restaurant in Wachapreague over on the Atlantic side, where I had more wonderful crab cakes (broiled, not fried) and enjoyed a table for lunch in the window by the marina and water.
For an ocean visit, Assateague has fine beaches for swimming with parking and changing houses as well as great hiking trails in the woods.
At the end of each day, we came home to our comfy cottage, its decks, its hammock and its view. Every day, there were different bird sounds. It was so private and secluded we could sit on the deck in our night clothes with coffee in the morning, if we could climb out of the ultra-soft bed, that is.
We aren’t sports people, but with the dock to launch canoes and kayaks, this would be a great place for active families and couples. There are a number of lovely restaurants for those who don’t want to cook. There are town walks to visit antique shops and art galleries.
There are other things to do daily – a jaunt down to Cape Charles and a day trip by boat to Tangier Island with its antiquated way of life and speech.
The owners, Joyce and Duke, are generous and very helpful about the area. This is one of those places that many of us who stay at Heartsworth plan to return to – a place to revitalize at and enjoy. Beds are soft, the kitchen was supplied with everything we needed, kids can hang out in their own room upstairs and honeymooners can have privacy.
Very highly recommended.
My husband, adult daughter with her 3 month old baby and I had a fabulous time in this house. We took the canoe out for several paddles, catching some great views of Osprey, a turtle, a ray! and more.
The house is very comfortable, decorated so warmly and filled with personal touches and character.
We walked to town one day, baby in stroller and checked out the shops in down (and did our share of retail therapy) and lunch, too.
Our hosts were lovely folks. Thanks for a wonderful family get away.
Your will enjoy the birding, biking, canoeing, fishing, crabbing, and kayaking in the area. There are wonderful top notch restaurants in the town, as well as, nifty gift, art and antique shops. Onancock features a performing playhouse and features performances several times a month. There is also a movie theatre. Stroll around town and visit historic Ker Place. Away from the town heading east, you will find miles of sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean. From the wharf in Onancock you can catch the mail boat and have a day excursion to Tangier Island, where you will discover a quaint way of living on an island with no autos. The inhabitants speak with a dialect termed by some as 'Elizabethan English.' There are wonderful golf clubs nearby either at the Country Club or the Arnold Palmer courses in nearby Cape Charles. There are canoes and kayaks for rent and you can also join a guided excursion to discover the alluring creeks and marshes.
Other Activities: crabbing, arrow head hunting, bird watching
