About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Views are spectacular. Watching the sun rise is a 'to be remembered' experience as are the full moons rising. As you walk into this home on the beach with hand-split cedar shakes, you see water everywhere. Bedrooms are furnished with American and English antique furnishings. There is ceramic tile throughout the main floor and radiant heat. A Jøtul stove provides a special warmth on cool nights.

This private home on the beach is tucked against a hillside with easy access to boating, swimming, and beach combing. It is walking distance from the ferry landing--about 1 mile by beach and 1-1/2 miles by road. A regular sight are the seagulls, herons, kingfishers, eagles, seals, sea otter, and deer. At low tide, you have access to an inviting sandy tide flat with clams and crab, tide pools and beach-rock inhabitants. It is a haven to relax; a great place for families and friends.

A short 10-minute ferry ride takes you to rural Lummi Island--a small wooded Island. Lummi has a population of about 900 which probably doubles or triples in the summer months. Day trips can be made to Vancouver BC, Seattle or Mt Baker. You are 20 minutes from shopping in Bellingham, Lynden, and the Canadian border.

There are ten miles of roads for bikers--mostly following the beaches of the Island. For the beach comber there are many treasures--agates, shells, beach glass. It is a great place to relax and read as well--and to just enjoy the views.

Saturdays feature a Saturday market from June through August. You can purchase fresh produce, pastries, and local artists show their wares. There are two restaurants (the Willows is known internationally) and a coffee shop on the Island as well as a general grocery store. Two churches on the Island hold services Sunday mornings--Island Chapel meets at the Lummi Island Grange Hall across the street from the post office and about a block north of the ferry dock.

About Louise and Mel Kolstad

My husband and I retired to our property on Lummi Island. We lived in Sunrise for two years and then moved to a new home built on the Island. We love the Island and its rural quality.

Louise and Mel Kolstad purchased this house in 1969

Why Louise and Mel Kolstad chose San Juan Islands

My grandmother purchased the property in 1945 and then she and my grandfather built Sunrise. The cedar shakes are hand split from cedar they found on the beach. It has been a family retreat for many years and I am the third generation to own the property.

Our children and now our grandson plays on the beach at Sunrise. It is safely away from the road (about 250 feet).

Mel and I bought the property from my parents and aunts and uncles in about 1969. We spent every summer and many weekends at Sunrise throughout the years. Our kids love it and our grandson now plays on the beach when he comes.

We started renting Sunrise in 2007 after we built a new home on the Island. We will never sell this wonderful retreat, but can share it with others as well as family.

This is a special family place and we have been pleased to share it.

What makes this house unique

Sunrise is at the water's edge, away from the road. I love beach combing and walk the beach north to the ferry dock and south to Sunrise Cove whenever possible. Agates, shells, and sea glass our my special finds.

On minus tides there are crab and clams on the tide flat. Walking with my grandson on the tide flat is a treat as I watch him jump on the horse clam holes and pick up starfish.

The views are spectacular with Mt. Baker in front--sunsets are beautiful as they reflect on Mt. Baker. At night the lights of Bellingham twinkle--beautiful! During the day boats constantly go by heading out on their adventures.

We have always been boaters and have enjoyed the ease of getting out on the water. Some of our guests have brought canoes and kayaks. Some have brought smaller outboard boats and rubber rafts.

Guestbook comments from the owner

By Scott Dorr and Family (Happy Valley, OR)

What can I say? The setting is magnificent with seascapes, natural beauty, and abundant wildlife. Sunrise Cottage has everything you need for a vacation home, but most impressive are the windows that provide unsurpassed vistas to the North, East and South around the clock. If you like to relax or read, comb the beaches, explore Lummi Island, Watch for eagles and herons, walk the flats at minus low tides, search for crabs, roast marsh mellows, or just interact with family and friends, then this vacation spot is where you need to be! You and your kids will love it!! The owners, Mel and Louise, are very friendly and accommodating. It is evident they care about you and desire that you have a memorable vacation experience. Be sure to bring a camera.

Amazing house with amazing views!!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the house was perfect for the 5 adults who stayed this trip. The weather even cooperated and allowed us to stroll the beach. Also we had an amazing sunrise on our last morning that gave us amazing pictures, in addition to all the scenic photos we took. The home is relaxing and welcoming and the binoculars were nice to have on hand!!

Owner's Response: I am so pleased that the weather cooperated with your visit. Sunrises are beautiful--any time of the year. Do come again--you will love summers at Sunrise. Minus tides are great if you are there, as the sandy tide flat and all the tide pools, crabs, clams await. Louise

Perfect Family Get Away

  • 4 of 5

This home has an amazing, private location that was ideal for our 2 boys: 5 & 14 yrs. Even with blustery conditions, they could play on the beach and we could watch from the house. The kitchen is one of the best equipped rental homes we've visited. The bathtub was definitely a luxury. There is space in this home to have privacy and still be together as a family. Our only struggle was the bed in the master. Hubby is 6'5" and we do best in a large bed. But, it's OK, because next visit he can sleep in the BUNK BED LOFT, which was super fun.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We lived at Sunrise in the summers in our kid's growing-up years. I kept track of what they were doing from the house often--as you mentioned. There is a good view of the beach--let alone Mt Baker and Bellingham Bay to the east. We try to have everything our guests need, which includes the kitchen. Come again!

PERFECT in every way

  • 5 of 5

Our nine-night stay at Sunrise was perfect for everyone in our group. We had four generations of family from 4 states. The weather was wonderful and the view magnificent. We thought we had the best view on Lummi as we could see Mt. Baker, the ferry, and Bellingham lights at night. We explored the island by foot, bike, and car. We had lunch at the Willows, loved the locally grown farmstands, and enjoyed every minute on the marvelously large deck and evenings around fire pit.

The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed for our family. And having the high chair and Pack-n-Play provided was great.

For our group and amount of time we were there, the extra large, wonderful refrigerator was a necessity. Don't rely on local store for anything during peak summertime season.

Our only regret was that we had no minus tides during our stay. We had hoped to experience the mudflats and sea life that are featured in photos of this great house.

Also, our son left a duffel bag behind which Mel delivered to Bellingham the next week.

The peaceful experience and view from Sunrise rivals any place on the planet!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review; I think you hit all the major points. The views are fantastic! I'm sorry you missed the minus tides and the sandy tide flats. The minus tide dates seem to rent early. There are starfish, clams, crab, tide pools with different types of little fish and crabs. Not only do the little ones love the tide flats, but us "big" ones too. We are glad we had an opportunity to share with you and your family. Do come again!

Sunrise exceeded expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Twins age 5, grandson age 7 plus grandparents were thrilled by Sunrise and Lummi Island as a whole. Sunrise is beautiful, well appointed, and spacious, and the many windows take advantage of the fabulous views. We were overjoyed when we first walked into this beautiful retreat. Louise and Mel are nearby to offer assistance if needed. The tide-pooling was outstanding, and swimming at the nearby public beach was excellent. The memories will last, and everyone had a very fine time. Indeed, we would love to return and would highly recommend Sunrise.

Owner's Response: Thank you! I loved the tide flat and tidal pools as a child, as did my children and my grandson. We are glad that we can share our special beach home within a few feet of the water. We do hope that you can return.

Magical weekend!

  • 5 of 5

My extended family and I (5 adults + 2 kids + 4 dogs!) enjoyed Memorial Day weekend at Sunrise, and it couldn't have been better! We spent our days exploring the beach in front of the house (eagles! clams! oysters!), the trails on the island (Otto Preserve and Baker Preserve), local artists' studios and making good use of the large adirondack chairs overlooking Hale Passage and Mt. Baker beyond! We arrived to find Sunrise even better than the VRBO photos, and all accommodations really comfortable. We ended up cooking and eating all our meals at the house, and the kitchen was fully stocked with dishware and utensils (plus the BBQ was easy to use). Lucky us, we also were able to enjoy the peak of the Sunrise garden that Louise and Mel have made beautiful, and left with a list of plants we need to buy at our local nurseries.

I can't recommend this house enough, and just hope that in doing so it doesn't mean the calendar will be full many months in advance! We look forward to celebrating another family weekend at Sunrise, as this home made our vacation on Lummi Island truly magical.

Great Short Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 3-year-old daughter, and I are very thankful to Louise and Mel for letting us stay at Sunrise on short notice for a peaceful and beautiful getaway. We had incredible weather and were able to relax by the beach, explore for sea critters, witness some otters playing near the shore, observe multiple bald eagles in the tree next to the house, and just escape work for a couple days. Louise was excellent and fast when communicating with us and it was a joy to meet her on our day of arrival. I hope we can make it back again sometime soon!
