Views are spectacular. Watching the sun rise is a 'to be remembered' experience as are the full moons rising. As you walk into this home on the beach with hand-split cedar shakes, you see water everywhere. Bedrooms are furnished with American and English antique furnishings. There is ceramic tile throughout the main floor and radiant heat. A Jøtul stove provides a special warmth on cool nights.

This private home on the beach is tucked against a hillside with easy access to boating, swimming, and beach combing. It is walking distance from the ferry landing--about 1 mile by beach and 1-1/2 miles by road. A regular sight are the seagulls, herons, kingfishers, eagles, seals, sea otter, and deer. At low tide, you have access to an inviting sandy tide flat with clams and crab, tide pools and beach-rock inhabitants. It is a haven to relax; a great place for families and friends.

A short 10-minute ferry ride takes you to rural Lummi Island--a small wooded Island. Lummi has a population of about 900 which probably doubles or triples in the summer months. Day trips can be made to Vancouver BC, Seattle or Mt Baker. You are 20 minutes from shopping in Bellingham, Lynden, and the Canadian border.

There are ten miles of roads for bikers--mostly following the beaches of the Island. For the beach comber there are many treasures--agates, shells, beach glass. It is a great place to relax and read as well--and to just enjoy the views.

Saturdays feature a Saturday market from June through August. You can purchase fresh produce, pastries, and local artists show their wares. There are two restaurants (the Willows is known internationally) and a coffee shop on the Island as well as a general grocery store. Two churches on the Island hold services Sunday mornings--Island Chapel meets at the Lummi Island Grange Hall across the street from the post office and about a block north of the ferry dock.

About Louise and Mel Kolstad

My husband and I retired to our property on Lummi Island. We lived in Sunrise for two years and then moved to a new home built on the Island. We love the Island and its rural quality.

Louise and Mel Kolstad purchased this house in 1969

Why Louise and Mel Kolstad chose Lummi Island

My grandmother purchased the property in 1945 and then she and my grandfather built Sunrise. The cedar shakes are hand split from cedar they found on the beach. It has been a family retreat for many years and I am the third generation to own the property.

Our children and now our grandson plays on the beach at Sunrise. It is safely away from the road (about 250 feet).

Mel and I bought the property from my parents and aunts and uncles in about 1969. We spent every summer and many weekends at Sunrise throughout the years. Our kids love it and our grandson now plays on the beach when he comes.

We started renting Sunrise in 2007 after we built a new home on the Island. We will never sell this wonderful retreat, but can share it with others as well as family.

This is a special family place and we have been pleased to share it.

What makes this house unique

Sunrise is at the water's edge, away from the road. I love beach combing and walk the beach north to the ferry dock and south to Sunrise Cove whenever possible. Agates, shells, and sea glass our my special finds.

On minus tides there are crab and clams on the tide flat. Walking with my grandson on the tide flat is a treat as I watch him jump on the horse clam holes and pick up starfish.

The views are spectacular with Mt. Baker in front--sunsets are beautiful as they reflect on Mt. Baker. At night the lights of Bellingham twinkle--beautiful! During the day boats constantly go by heading out on their adventures.

We have always been boaters and have enjoyed the ease of getting out on the water. Some of our guests have brought canoes and kayaks. Some have brought smaller outboard boats and rubber rafts.

Guestbook comments from the owner

By Scott Dorr and Family (Happy Valley, OR)

What can I say? The setting is magnificent with seascapes, natural beauty, and abundant wildlife. Sunrise Cottage has everything you need for a vacation home, but most impressive are the windows that provide unsurpassed vistas to the North, East and South around the clock. If you like to relax or read, comb the beaches, explore Lummi Island, Watch for eagles and herons, walk the flats at minus low tides, search for crabs, roast marsh mellows, or just interact with family and friends, then this vacation spot is where you need to be! You and your kids will love it!! The owners, Mel and Louise, are very friendly and accommodating. It is evident they care about you and desire that you have a memorable vacation experience. Be sure to bring a camera.

Wonderful stay!!

  • 5 of 5

Such beauty from every window! There were eight of us, five adults and three kids, and one midsize labmix dog. We all had a great time. Louise and Mell were wonderful too. They even were able to line up a freshly caught Silver Salmon for us to purchase. It was delicious grilled on the deck. Our family had a great time exploring Lummi Island. Hiking trails, and beaches revealed rope swings, tree houses, sealife and berry picking. It was a family trip to remember!

Owner's Response: Your timing was just right to get that salmon freshly caught, that day, on the reef net gear. The trails are great and it sounds like you took advantage of them. It is a beautiful place; thank you for your review.

Gorgeous View

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautifully placed with a stunning view of Mt Baker and Bellingham Bay as well as Portage Island.

Sleeps 6 adults well, and has bunk beds for two more. The house is well maintained and fully stocked with the cooking utensils for holiday meals for a family gathering.

The owners are very nice and extended every courtesy to accommodate our needs.

The driveway is very steep and I would recommend a four wheel or all wheel drive vehicle with more than 6 inches clearance if parking in the garage.

We would definitely stay there again.

Relaxing Thanksgiving stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four, plus our dog, enjoyed a quiet and peaceful Thanksgiving at this home. There was more than enough space for all of us and we discussed how we could come again with another family and still have space for everyone. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything I could possibly need to make our Thanksgiving dinner, plus more. We enjoyed walks on the beach finding treasures like sea glass and shells. We spent most of the time inside playing board games, reading books and watching movies. We would love to come back in the summer to be able to enjoy the water more but it was just what we were looking for to disconnect from the world and have a few relaxing days together as a family.

Nice older house with great views but prepare for possible booking errors, steep driveway

  • 4 of 5

My family found the Sunrise house to be just as advertised and we all had a lovely, relaxing weekend there recently. If you haven't taken the 3D tour of the home, we highly recommend it--it feels just like you are walking through the home and you can easily see the stunning views from the deck, and how close to the water the home really is.

While it is true that the home and furniture are older, the kitchen was nicely updated and well-stocked. And we were grateful that for an additional fee, the owner allowed our family dogs to come on the trip with us.

Before you book this property, however, we have some advice to share: 1) double-check all correspondence and charges for errors, 2) consider bringing only four-wheel-drive vehicles, and 3) bring your own drinking water. Here's why we suggest these things:

1). We caught a math error in the initial quote, were overcharged for cleaning, and our damage deposit was briefly held back as a result of the owner accidentally misplacing our payment. None of the mistakes were intentional, of course, and we were able to make things right with the owner, but it did make for a rather rough booking experience from start to finish.

2). The paved driveway to the property is incredibly steep and twisty. On the wet fall day our family left for home, two of us with four-wheel drive vehicles got up the driveway just fine; one of us with a front-wheel-drive-only vehicle didn't make it even a quarter of the way up. That vehicle had to drive through a neighboring yard and up a different gravel driveway in order to finally get out. We were told by the owner later that no one had ever had trouble with their paved driveway before but with winter coming, we felt it best to warn others. If we had known beforehand that getting back up the driveway might be an issue, we would have parked on the street above and walked down, or perhaps even driven a different vehicle that trip.

3). The property is on an island with well water so if you aren't used to drinking softened water, we recommend bringing your own bottled water to drink.
