Beth and Dennis Kirwan, owners. Dennis and I grew up on the Mendocino Coast. I lived in Hawaii in the third grade. We currently live in Mendocino, CA. My father lives in Hawaii and is a coffee and mango farmer on the Big Island.
We have two boys, Casey (21) who is a professional bull rider and lives in Texas and Blake (18), is a senior at Fort Bragg High School living with us.
We also have two dogs, Daisy and Colton and a horse named Rooster!
Beth Kirwan purchased this house in 2002
When we bought the property, it was all over grown with a rusty old car in the middle of hte lot. We designed and built the Aloha House specifically as a vacation rental. We wanted to create a home to share that is comfortable for families to use as if it was their own.
The house is situated in a great little neighborhood. It is about a two minute walk to the Pacific Ocean (west of the house) and to Kealakekua Bay (North of the house). The location is a perfect home-base for exploring around the island.
The house is beautiful, with its huge mahogany and glass doors that open up to the large lanai. Yet it is very comfortable. We built and furnished it for durability, so no one has to worry about anything.
We are still talking about the great time we had.
The house worked well for our group of 7 adults, 2 kids and a baby. 3 master suites and walking distance to the beach were the selling points. The big table on the lanai was perfect for family meals, as we only ate out once. The kitchen had everything we needed too.
With kids, it was great to have the beach just a couple blocks down. We could go swim & play & get back for lunch without loading up the car. We enjoyed the quiet residential setting as well, and all the little extras the house had topped it all off for a great stay.
I planned a surprise 40th birthday vacation for my husband this July 2016. We invited friends and family to join us and ended up with a party of 7 in total. The house was large enough to accommodate all of us. The lanai was my favorite part of the house to enjoy the ocean breeze. Walking distance, within a minute to Manini Beach and the bay or the opposite direction to launch kayaks or paddleboards. The locals were super friendly and giving, so of course we had to return the favor by renting from them a kayak to Snorkel and view the dolphins in Kealakekua Bay. If you are looking for peace, relaxation and tranquility this home is for you...if you are looking for nightlife, close to bars and restaurants consider being closer to Kona. But it was perfect for us and the ultimate relaxation for the week.
The only cons I would have to say is this house has no ac, so either A:be out doing something during the day as it gets very hot and stuffy mid day, or B in the water during that time. If there was ac in this house the rent would probably be crazy high since it is a perfect location. I would also suggest 1 more spare fan for the house since we used each sleeping space, our kids had to alternate nights sharing a fan which with a fan is bare able but without a fan uncomfortable. We were only happy to return home for our ac unit.
The Aloha House was perfect for me, my wife, our adult sons and their wives and my daughter. All seven of us had plenty of room to stretch out and relax. We woke up each morning to the sounds of the waves and the songs of birds that are unique to Hawaii. Everything smelled and sounded so refreshing. We ate breakfast on the lanai and then went snorkeling in the bay which was only a few steps away. There were more positive experiences than I can list here.
Even though we were warned about mosquitoes, we did not have a problem, even when we ate on the lanai later in the evening. As long as you remember that you are in Hawaii, the changes in heat, humidity and nature make it a more memorable adventure. (We loved the geckos!)
Several coffee plantations are near and we thought the Aloha House was a good hub for going around the southern tip of the island to Hilo and Kilauea volcano one day and around the northern tip on another day. Both drives were about 2.5 hours one way and were very scenic.
Aloha House is in Captain Cook and a bit of a drive off the main highway, but it's location is worth the drive. The house was all that we expected and more. Beth was a great host and had everything that we needed to get started on our vacation. Thanks Beth!
We met different members of our extended family for a week in this lovely house, ages 8-74, and it was perfect for our crowd. We spent most of our time in this tropical, low-key, local-vibe area, swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing on the fabulous lanai together. Thank you to the owners for a wonderful stay!
A few notes:
-We kept the counters very clean, but we still found a few surprise cockroaches around. The geckos seems to take care of most of the bug clean-up, but note that some form of bug repellent is necessary, given the dengue fever scare. This is NOT a negative for the house, only a reality for this tropical climate. But if one cockroach sighting makes you squeamish, this might not be your area of the Big Island.
-The best family-friendly snorkeling we found on the whole island was just down the road at Two Steps. This local-frequented beach/shore is partly sandy, so my kids who are not super swimmers could walk in and enjoy the fish where they could touch the bottom. The adults ventured further out and were rewarded one day with a dolphin pod sighting!
-No dishwasher. And the dishes needed to be cleaned immediately to avoid ants.
-If you're looking for the white sand beaches and resort-like amenities, this is not the house for you. If you're looking for more of what one local called the "old Hawaii" feel, this place is perfectly located.
-Our son has a mild physical disability, and the house worked well for us. The (tiny) beach was close enough for him to walk, or we could take his wheelchair if he was tired.
I was worried after reading few bad comments but talking with the owner , he promised me that my stay will be perfect and it was. Everything was cleaned, equiped Kitchen. The house is in a small community who are very proud and take care of the beach. You are far for a lot of things but in the other hand, it is so peaceful. The view is great, the lanai is huge and we enjoyed it every day.
Spent a week with extended family at Beth's place and had a wonderful stay. Beth's "use anything you can find" offer was great, we used some of the beach gear fro the laundry. The beautiful house is equipped with everthing you need to cook for a large group. The lanai/deck was gorgeous and we spent many hours there. House is two minutes walk from a seaside park, shaded by palm trees, beautiful spot for sunsets. The coast here is rocky, but there is a small inlet at the park where entry to the water is possible. The house is in a quiet seaside community, and we met a number of the local people. There are no groceries/restaurants/gas stations in the community, these are available about a 15 min drive away up and down a windy road from main highway, so a bit of planning required. Patz Pies for pizza is recommended.
Since 2010 our family of 10 has vacationed on the Big Island 5 times, each time staying at the Aloha House. We have never been disappointed--have already booked our return in the fall of 2016. Management is a phone call away to answer questions and ensure you enjoy your stay. The photos and descriptions on the website are accurate, but just can't capture the tropical feeling of the home. The interior is so clean, bright and airy with its high ceilings. Apart from the good sized kitchen and interior living room, there are 3 master ensuite bedrooms (one with additional twin beds) a loft for overflow, and half bath on the main floor--room for lots of people and lots of gear. Huge sliding glass and screen doors on 3 sides of the house lead out to the wrap around lanai. The lanai is our gathering place. We have morning coffee on the loveseat and chairs, and watch the sun break over the hills as we plan our day. We love to watch the sun set over the water from the west lanai with its lounge chairs and glider. Lots of great meals have come out of the well equipped kitchen and been served on the huge table on that lanai. The fridge has a good sized freezer perfect for Costco runs. The ChoiceMart up the hill is our favourite place to shop for groceries with great fresh fish, growlers and good prices. My granddaughter's job is to decorate with flowers from the yard and pick the fresh papaya, limes and oranges --a tropical paradise. The house also has a convenient outdoor shower and hose, great for cleaning up after beach activities, a two minute saunter away. Manini beach is a ,friendly local family beach with world class snorkeling equal to Bonaire IMHO. There is a sandy area for building sandcastles, a small "baby pool" for toddlers, a protected space for kids to use their body boards or enter the deeper water, and a rocky shoreline for beach combing. Our family swims, snorkels, paddle boards, and kayaks here, sometimes going all the way to the Captain Cook monument accompanied by dolphins. While it is tempting to just stay put and enjoy the idyll, Aloha House is well situated for short excursions (Place of Refuge/2 step perhaps 10 minutes away; coffee plantations and botanical gardens just up the hill) or day trips all over the island (Volcano, Hilo). The National Park system has an awesome program for kids here, highly rated by the granddaughter, and several are close by. Aloha House is perfect for all of us--can't wait to return.
