Cabin W/Guest Quarters on 5 Acres....Great for 2 Families

Overview

About the property

Sleeps 9 (3 bedroom,3 bath)

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AND BREATHE IN THE AMBIANCEof INDIAN and WESTERN cultures of this home on 5 private wooded acres but only one mile from the town of Custer. The cedar house has ceramic tile floors throughout, leather furniture, new kitchen appliances and LOTS of windows.

The main house sleeps 2 in the master bedroom, 2 in the attached 'western room' (accessed from the porch) and 1 in the large utility room. The guest quarters sleeps 2 in the main studio room and 2 in the small bedroom.

The master bedroom is furnished in aspen log with a queen bed and master bath. A utility room off the kitchen sleeps 1 in a twin bed w/access to the main bathroom and its own entrance. The porch outside the utility room gives access to the 'western room' which has a full size bed with beautiful rock and cedar walls (western room is for warm weather months). We also have a pak'n play and a booster chair w/tray. Guest quarters is setup like a studio apartment (minus a kitchen) but with a bathroom/shower. The main room has a queen size bed, sofa, tv/satellite. The second room has a full size bed a separate entrance and all the character of a cabin setting.

There are 4 covered porches the favorite and largest is partially enclosed with comfy wicker furniture. It's a favorite spot for morning coffee, watching thunderstorms or sipping cocktails in the evening. From any porch you can enjoy the view, peacefulness and wildlife. Relax with a family bbq or play a game of horseshoes in the meadow.

Custer is in an area known as the 'heart' of the hills and local attractions include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Jewel and Wind Caves, the scenic Needles Highway. It is also 6 miles from Crazy Horse Mountain, several lakes and approximately 45 miles from historic Deadwood and the Rapid City airport. This area also attracts motorcyclists especially during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. We also welcome hunters for deer, elk and turkey season. In the fall Custer State Park hosts the famous Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival.

About Mary Shepard

I live in Colorado

Mary Shepard purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Mary Shepard chose Black Hills

I fell in love with the Black Hills after several trips to the Sturgis motorcycle rallies. The hills and rock formation are beautiful, peaceful and scenic with lots of history. I love the small town slow pace.

What makes this cabin unique

Most people can't decide if they should stay and hang out at the cabin or if they should go sight seeing or tour other area attractions. It is so relaxing you won't want to leave!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for a great house. Everyone settled in for a great stay. The back porch was our favorite spot. Day and night. The kitchen suited our needs. Having a radio was a plus. The car port spared the bikes from a couple of downpours.

The location of the house was right in the center of the Park system, and the scenic drives were great. We would happily give a recomendation to any future rental requests that you might have.

Thanks, Polly Balland

Great cabin, but disappointed in bedrooms.

  • 3 of 5

The secluded cabin nestled in the woods provided for beautiful scenery and view of the wildlife.

The main house was nice and provided everything we needed. The master bedroom and bath were beautiful and I expected the other rooms to be of the same quality, especially since I paid an additional $15/person/night. However, I didn't feel that was the case. The "Guest Quarters" is in a detached garage. In order to get to the 'studio apartment' that was advertised in the guest quarters, you have to walk outside and through a woodshop area that had an overpowering smell that resembled tiki torch oil. The bathroom in the studio apartment had holes in the wall from an old towel rack and the paint wasn't complete on the bottom portion of the wall where a sheetrock repair must have been made. There were cobwebs in the bathroom and the window sills were caked with dirt. The "Western Room" was tiny, dark, and the floors were very dusty and musty smelling. The towels in all bathrooms were very thin.

I feel like for the money we paid for the cabin, we should have gotten better, cleaner bedrooms.

Owner's Response: The Guest Quarters is not in a former garage, but an "out building" which is prevalent throughout the area, where many have living quarters originally used while building, it also has 2 entrances so entering through the workshop is not necessary. The ad clearly states it is separate from the main house. If there are holes in the wall from a towel rack then someone who rented broke it and did not report it. Floor boards and the drywall above newly installed tile floors have not been repainted as time did not permit before rental season and back to back renters. The towels are new and not the thickest but purchased for quick drying for our 5 hour cleaning window. The Western room is an additional sleeping space and not a "bedroom" since it is attached outside of the main house it is self contained and closed up most of the time, it has 3 windows for fresh air. Not sure how the floors would be dusty but will certainly check it out! There are 2 other bedrooms not mentioned in this review. We have written the ad describing the rooms and sleeping arrangements as clearly as we can.

Relaxing Cabin in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

The location of this cabin is terrific. Close enough to Custer to pick up whatever you need but far enough away to feel like you are really getting away from it all. It is very convenient to Custer State Park. The cabin was quiet & clean. Internet was reliable. Kitchen was well set up for cooking. Having a washer and dryer is a bonus. We stayed 5 nights and enjoyed the privacy and relaxation. Great spot to come back to after sight seeing or just hang out and relax. The covered porch was used daily for enjoying the forest and seeing the numerous deer visitors. We filled the bird feeders and enjoyed the antics of the chipmunks, squirrels and lots of birds. We would stay here again.

Perfect in everyway

  • 5 of 5

Location, spacious, ammedities and comfortable so much so we wanted to stay forever. We arrived late for move in and our stash of food slim so it was nice to see that there were some starters things for us which was a blessing. The property is delightful private and cozy which added to our vacation. Plenty of room to spread out. Clean, lots of kitchen supplies, even laundry and bath supplies, lots of towels (thin and small though)(so if you want being your own but the dryer will take forever to dry them so keep that in mind). The satellite TV worked great as did the wifi. This location assisted in our ability to get around and see things without having to drive a long distance too or from our daily "go see it's". The Custer downtown quaint and had what we needed. Recommendations big thunder do their claiming gold mining 4 he tour, wild mustangs take that tour don't just show up the tour is more than worth it. Blue bell for dinner, Palmer gultch chuckwagon add their horseback riding the hour before. Cascade falls take your bathing suit. Mammoth cave don't miss it then eat at woolley's. Skip eating at laughing water, if you are driving skip the corn palace in Mitchell, do wildlife loop at dinner time you will be amazed at the buffalo, take the iron mountain South to north, grapes and grinds a must and bring your bikes we hauled 3 from Michigan and so glad we did. Our only warning would be to make it a point to show up while sun is still up the layout of the house is unique and works great hard though to see and figure out in the dark.

A mixed bag

  • 3 of 5

I have stayed at cabins like this all over the country and found this one to be average at best. The location is ideal. We stayed there four days and had easy access to local attractions. The cabin was also clean and spacious with beautiful scenery (we saw deer every evening, many birds, etc). On the con side, I felt like this owner was just stingy. She could have invested so little to make things more comfortable. If visitors are coming from the East coast, they have a 12 hour travel day (this is by plane; longer of course, if people are driving) and it would be nice to just have some bottled water or something for guests when the arrive (this is typical of EVERY place I have stayed in the past). It would be nice to at least have coffee filters and coffee too, which is usually standard. There was ONE coffee filter in the cabin and no coffee (for four guests staying 4 days). Most places I've stayed even have coffee and tea. Again, this would cost the owner barely ANYTHING and make the stay so much nicer. The towels in the master suite were so shabby and threadbare that I needed 4 just to dry off after a shower (and I'm a skinny girl!). It looks like they had been bleached within every inch of their lives and were so small that if I held it up, it would not even reach my waist. The bed in the master suite is very uncomfortable and the shower would go from scalding hot to freezing cold about 15-20 times in the course of one shower. The first day I thought perhaps our friends were showering at the same time or using the washing machine, but they were not, as it happened the next day when I "scheduled" my shower. In addition, this woman has so many rules that we had to print them out, as we were afraid we would not get our deposit back (don't bother, as she has it plastered to the refrigerator). For some reason, we had to wash our own sheets on the day we left AND have a second load in the dryer. I'm not sure why, but I'd like her to have an early morning flight and have to get up at 4 in the morning to do LAUNDRY before she heads home. Ridiculous! We were paying a hefty cleaning bill and there was no cleaning while we were there, so why is this necessary? Perhaps she's had some bad guests but we found it OVERKILL and this left a very bad taste in our mouths.

Owner's Response: A few facts... We also stay in vrbo homes including a beach side penthouse in Hawaii, even it did not not provide coffee or bottled water nor has it been provided in any home we rented. The rental agreement details what is provided. Our coffee pot does not require filters if any were present a renter provided them on their own and left them. The towels are brand new and maybe have been washed 3 times, the original plush heavy towels took to long to dry. The mattress is top of the line Stearn & Foster its not old, doesn't sag, is not extremely hard or soft. Extreme water temp changes in the shower have never been experienced or reported but we will check to make sure that hasn't changed. In 12 years of renting we've never charged extra or retained deposit money for cleaning. The cleaning fee would not be considered "hefty" for 4-5 hours of cleaning. The cleaning window is small (4-5 hours between guests). Cleaning personnel requested guests START two loads of laundry, the request is "wash one load, put it in the dryer, start a second load leave it in the washer". This shortens cleaning time especially with bedding and towels for 9 people. We are very accommodating if renters contact us with specific needs or concerns. Had we been contacted about your early departure we would have understood and not wanted you to start laundry. It's always best to contact owners for issues in advance or when they occur so they can be addressed.

Quiet, secluded and centrally located!

  • 5 of 5

This property is centrally located for getting around in the Black Hills. Adequate space for 3 families to move around and not feel crowded. Custer is within minutes with the Purple Pie place and the Bakery as must stops! Bakery has an awesome breakfast menu and be sure to have a side of green chile! The local grocery store is convenient and reasonable for the area. Larger than it looks! Mount Rushmore, Hill City, Keystone, and other sites are just minutes away. If you like wineries, try the ones outside of Hill City after seeing the railroad museum.

Then come back from the hustle and bustle and watch the deer in the pasture and the birds on the lake! Perfect cabin for our relaxing getaway week!
