Pretty and peaceful
We had a great time at The Grapes on our girls getaway. This property was tucked back away from it all and very peaceful and quiet. This property has everything one could need or want and, with 3 women in the house, enjoyed having a bathroom for each of us! :-) We especially loved sitting on the deck at night watching the thousands of lightning bugs and listening to the peepers.
Overall, a good home
Overall a very beautiful, functional home. We did have an issue in the basement with the bunkbeds...lots of spiders and the top bunk was very close to the ceiling. Instead, the people who were going to sleep down there camped out in the living room. It worked out in the end!
One Night Stay
I really enjoyed this house and it's location! It was really beautiful in the morning and I love the house design with the windows and high ceilings. You feel like you are in the middle of nowhere but you are only minutes from the actual town, which is nice. I'll definitely stay again!
A Little Slice of Heaven
We had such a relaxing time staying at "The Grapes." Quaint, cozy, and inviting are three words to describe this home. As an added bonus, Muse Winery is a quick trip down the gravel road.
My only complaint was that we didn't stay a little bit longer. Definitely on my list for a return trip.
Serene setting, comfortable house
Our time spent in Woodstock was relaxing and peaceful, made possible by this comfortable house with great outdoor space. We grilled multiple nights, enjoyed the back deck and the hammocks. The house was perfect for our group of 10. The kitchen had the necessary equipment to cook big meals and the filtered tap water was delicious! The only downside was the neighboring dogs that get too friendly... a-ok if you're a dog lover, which most in our crew are, but offputting if you're not. Not enough of a drawback to decrease the stars given though. We would definitely stay here again!
Great house and great location
House was exactly as advertised, but with more space than I expected! Every kitchen appliance that you could ever need, glasses, mugs, etc. Location was amazing - walking distance to a winery and vines visible from the back porch. Wish we could've stayed longer!
FUN STUFF: THINGS TO DO
30 minutes drive for an all season resort, skiing (great field for families….we are skiers and its plenty of fun for all levels) and tubing, golf, zip lines and mountain biking trails (reachable by chair lift).
Slightly further away, an incredible water park if you want a treat for the kids for the day, and a larger ski field than Bryce.
40 minutes to a really quite impressive set of caves, our whole family enjoyed this.
There are full detailed maps of the Appalachian trail in the house for enthusiasts. Big Schloss is an excellent local hike up to a really cool rock formation.
Masses of Civil War history for enthusiasts in the area. In Woodstock its worth going to the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in downtown Woodstock. A good google search will lead to the best historical sites in the region a short drive from Woodstock.
It can be a great afternoon to float or paddle from our bridge to the next bridge. You can do this on your own or you can set up a day trip with Route 11 Outfitters (+1 540-459-8823).
Murray’s Fly Fishing Shop in Edinburgh (next town south along Route 11: +1 540-984-4212) runs great fly fishing classes or you can try your hand on your own in our river for smallmouth bass and sucker fish.
You could plan a whole day going from vineyard to vineyard in the area (check the brochures at the house or google away), and then end the day at Muse Vineyards next door for fabulous wine, gorgeous views, great music (they often have live bands), local art exhibitions and a short walk home up the hill...
The utterly fabulous Woodstock Brewhouse opened two weekends after we bought the house, and how thankful we were. Excellent onsite craft brewed beer, weekday nibbles and weekend BBQ from the renowned 1752 BBQ. Not to be missed!
Route 11 Potato Chips
Some of the best potato chips around are made in Mt. Jackson, two towns south (about 20 mins) on 81 or Route 11. Factory tours are a cool way to spend an hour or so, with tastings and cool merch.
The Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester is has seat service (stainless steel bottomless bowls of popcorn, old school milkshakes, hamburgers, beer etc), which is a pretty awesome: there is a small theatre in Woodstock town itself.
Excellent hot summer or cold winter afternoon activity for the family: a great little bowling alley just next to the Food Lion: 7 minute drive.
If you want to spoil the kids, drive 45 minutes to the Massanutten Water Park. Rated one of top 10 water parks in the USA.
FUN STUFF: FOOD
Each Saturday and Sunday morning there is a small Farmer’s Market in Woodstock town called the South Barn Street Market, 336 South Main St. We cannot recommend the meat from Country Rhodes more highly. Excellent, well butchered grass fed beef. Also a delicious poultry as well as some produce and crafts. Don’t miss the Firefly Hot Sauce!
This is the best soft serve ice cream we have ever eaten. Our favourites are vanilla with raspberry sauce for the grownups and vanilla/choc with butterscotch sauce and all the topping for the kiddos. No need to order anything larger than a kiddie sized. They are HUGE! It’s in an old fashioned trailer just as you head into Woodstock town on Route 11.
In addition to excellent beer the Brewhouse serves substantial nibbles Sunday - Thursday (nachos, flatbreads etc) which make a light and easy dinner and a full BBQ menu on Friday - Saturday, catered by 1752 BBQ, some of the best around. Go on the earlier side as they tend to run out of meat. 123 East Court St, downtown Woodstock.
Great local pub for stand-up hamburger style fare, on the Woodstock main street.
These guys are the real deal: run out of an old garage in Edinburg (15 minutes south on Route 11, next to Murry’s Fly Fishing Shop), they serve BBQ pork and fixin’s on Thurs, Fri and Sat. Eat there or bring it home.
Doughnuts and Taco Food Trucks
Check out the food trucks in the Rite Aid parking lot on weekends selling freshly made doughnuts and tacos (separate trucks). We haven’t tried either but have heard good things!
Little storefront of a great orchard, for excellent in season fruit and vege. On the right after the Tractor Supply Store just past the turn off to 81.
Fort Valley Nursery Cafe
The excellent (you won’t find a better garden center in the DC area) Fort Valley Nursery, has the sweetest cafe...sandwiches, soups, pastries, coffee….all in the setting of one of the best garden stores we know. Take a left on Hisey Avenue after the Tractor Supply Store just past the turn off to 81.
