Built during the days of grand sugar plantations, Vervain Mill was originally a working, wind-powered mill for processing sugar cane. Located on the southeast side of the island, part way up the hill toward Mt. Nevis where ocean breezes cool and refresh, Vervain Mill offers three bedrooms, three baths, beautiful furnishings, swimming pool, gazebo, architectural ruins, sweeping views, and lots of privacy.
The first level of the mill includes two large bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed and one with twin beds. Each has French doors opening to the lawn and pool, and each has a private bath. The stone-walled main floor of the tower, which includes the kitchen and indoor living/dining room, opens onto a dramatic wraparound terrace with sweeping views of the Atlantic and of Mt. Nevis. The large terrace includes sitting and dining areas covered by a series of flying canopies that provide shade with minimal interruption of the view.
The third level is an airy bedroom with a queen-size bed, private bath, and two beautiful arched windows. The top floor is a sitting room with two daybeds, writing desk, and walkout terrace overlooking fields and ocean.
Windows and doors are screened. The house is naturally cooled by its thick stone walls and a lovely breeze. There is rarely an uncomfortable night.
The Mill's 1.75-acre grounds are landscaped with an assortment of palm trees and flowering shrubs. Families of monkeys are frequently seen in the lower yard in the morning or afternoon as they frolic their way up or down the hill. Next to the mill stands the ruin of the original boiling house. The swimming pool has incredible views over pasturelands, up the mountain, and out to sea. Next to the pool is a gazebo, the perfect place to read anytime of day or watch sunsets. The gazebo is also a very atmospheric place for a private wedding.
Amenities include private swimming pool, maid service, washer and dryer, internet connection, VCR and DVD, stereo with CD/tape player, and a well-equipped kitchen. Electricity is 110v. With prior notice, guests can arrange for catered dinners.

My husband, Michael, is a retired dermatologist and he and I currently have a small skin care product company called Ocean Elements. Our first product is a wonderful moisturizing SPF 30 sunscreen.
We fell in love with Nevis and Vervain during our first visit to the island in January 1995. From the morning coffee on the terrace to the last chirping tree frog at night, there is a certain magic about the place, and we hope you feel the same.
Wendy Taylor purchased this villa in 1995
We absolutely loved our stay at Vervain Mill! Nevis is a great small island to get away to for a week & we enjoyed every bit of it.
The mill is BEAUTIFUL! It would easily sleep 6 adults (possibly more) but was PERFECT for the two of us. The renovation of the mill was spectacular! All the amenities, and then some. Well kept, well maintained, immaculate. 3 bedrooms plus a lounge room, 3 bathrooms, full kitchen, gorgeous deck with views of the grounds, the ocean, the mountain, etc., beautiful grounds, pool, everything you could want.
The mill is off the beaten path, which is exactly how we like it. Think seclusion, not isolation. But it only takes an hour to drive around the entire island, so you’re not far from anything. There are stores nearby so it’s easy to stock up on anything you need.
We explored the island every day of our visit. There are great restaurants & plenty of recommendations at the property. There is a great museum on the next road, which we highly recommend – it’s the ruins you see as you drive down to the property. If you really get out onto the less travelled roads, you can find ruins of other mills to see just how awesome the renovation of Vervain really is. We booked a snorkeling trip with John which was definitely a highlight & we highly recommend.
The mill itself offers enough to warrant booking it, but the management is what really puts it over the top. Wendy answered all of our questions and arranged for our trip to be so very relaxing. Without her, the trip could have been much different. We flew into St. Kitt’s late in the evening after the public ferry to Nevis ended. She arranged for a taxi to meet us at the airport to take us to a private ferry, which took us to Nevis, where another taxi was waiting to take us to the property. Wendy arranged for a local to prepare a meal & store in the fridge for when we arrived. Let me just say, do that! We ate that cake for the entire week. Wendy also arranged for a chef to come to the mill to prepare a meal for a special evening. And Wendy arranged for a rental car to be brought directly to the mill.
We originally booked the mill because it was pretty much the same price as a decent hotel room. But we prefer to do our own thing & don’t really love the monotony of hotels. In the end, this was absolutely the best way to go. We loved everything about the property & the management. We absolutely recommend the property & would stay here again!
Explore beautiful old ruins of sugar plantations. Hike the nearby nature trail and, for the more adventurous hiker, climb to the peak of Mt. Nevis (guide advised). Beautiful beaches to explore, and all beaches on the island are public.
