About Marsha Hoecker
When our son offered to sell us this house and a couple acres of land cut from the larger piece he intended to build on, we jumped at the chance. We were in our 50s and, having always lived in church owned housing, didn't have anywhere to eventually retire. Henry grew up in the Midwest but moved to Maine for his senior year in high school and Marsha was a Navy child, spending her early childhood in the south and in Japan and then settling in New England as a teenager. Marsha raised her family in VT and married Henry a couple years before going off to Episcopal Seminary. We have lived in Massachusetts, Vermont , and Connecticut and are now back in MA. Our plan is to retire to our wonderful little house in 2020.
Marsha Hoecker purchased this House in 2005
Why Marsha Hoecker chose Rockland
We love the view down to the ocean from the bedroom window, and the way the rising sun wakes us in the morning. The house is filled with light on a sunny day and in the winter it's wonderful passive solar heat. We love the access to walking trails, and to so many things up and down midcoast Maine.

Ok place. quirky!
The house was sunny and did have a great view of the ocean. It was very enjoyable to watch the sun rise and the great view for most of the days we stayed. The layout of the house was very quirky. The only shower is downstairs and all the bedrooms are upstairs. The kitchen was functional for cooking, but the layout just didn't seem to work well for two of us cooking. We did not feel secure in most of the chairs at the table. We did not use the TV so I can not comment. The gas grill was dirty but heated up very nicely, we used it twice. The soaking tub upstairs was also a nice addition. The beds were ok, but did not have foundations. The couch downstairs was not very comfortable and there was only one chair. The stairs seemed to be a bit steep and not much lighting at night to walk up them. There was plenty of space to put our stuff in the bedrooms, but one of the drawers had dirty clothes from a previous guest. There was a very strange odor near the fridge. The stackable washer and dryer were wonderful, so much that we are looking at LG to replace our existing ones at home. We loved the view, but it got very hot upstairs as the AC is a unit in the kitchen and heat rises.
Overall I would say this is a nice place but needs some TLC in a few areas. It just didn't feel clean and there were bugs (flies mostly) all over the place. Many of the lights were also out.
Of all the places we have stayed with HomeAway, this is the only place I would not return to stay. I also would not recommend it for the price we paid.
We loved this home! It has some unique features but is so charming, and the owners are so accommodating. Exceptional place!
The place was nice. It was within 5 to 7 minutes drive to the town center. The house had everything you need. I like the spacious yard. The view was spectacular from the second floor bedroom window.
Great place— very comfortable, good location, quiet but close to town.
Excellent visit— would stay there again.
So glad you enjoyed it! Please come again.
Beautiful house!! Lots of supplies. 6 minutes drive to central downtown. However, only 1 standing shower, not enough for a large family or group. Overall experience, super satisfied!!!
Comfortable house on a truly lovely property
My first impression when we drove up was that it was closer to the road and neighbors than I had imagined, but neither were an issue. It's a very quiet street and there is sufficient shrubbery to hide the neighbors completely, so mostly what you hear are birds.
The large yard is almost fairy-tale like with all of the beautiful flowers. The house was exactly as pictured and very comfortable for my boyfriend, myself and my 2 kids (10 and 8). The second bedroom is tiny, but overlooks the gardens, so my kids decided they got the best room.
It is 5 minutes away from anything there is to do in the area, yet quiet enough to feel secluded. We spent 3 full days there and there wasn't enough time to do all we wanted, including seeing the whole town and enjoying the yard, sauna and spa tub. Definitely will be planning my next trip to the area. Between the museums, stores, excellent food and views, the immediate area has much to offer.
A couple of quirks in the house to be made aware of (depending on how close you are to your traveling companions):
- The downstairs bathroom (with the shower) looks out onto the backyard with no window covering. We hung a towel, but this could be easily fixed.
- The master bathroom and master bedroom are separated by a doorway, but no door.
- None of the bathroom doors had locks. This didn't bother me much except for when the kids used the master bathroom at night. It does conveniently connect to the hallway.
All in all a great stay and I bet this property would be even more beautiful in the fall.
So glad you enjoyed out "quirky" house. It was originally built by empty nesters who really didn't seem to want their children to move back in!
