About the property

2 bedrooms plus convertible & carpeted 'crash' space; 1 bath; sleeps 6

Acadia View is located on a quiet dead end convenient both to the shops and restaurants of downtown Bar Harbor and to the beauty of Acadia National Park--only about 1/2 mile to either. There is a free shuttle in both directions--and shuttles carry bikes or strollers.. The layout is modern, with a breakfast island between kitchen and den, full kitchen with dishwasher, wireless internet connection, cable TV, DVD player, and full laundry. Outside there is a sun deck and a large lawn with gas grill. We furnish linens (beds made), towels, dishes, pans, detergents, and paper products--just about everything except toothbrushes!

Dining, Shopping, Boating: : Approximately 70 restaurants, mostly casual. Most have lobster, and most serve liquor. Good value by city standards. Friendly shops and outstanding craft and art galleries. Many forms of ocean boating, including: slow sunset sails, whale watches, guided sea kayaking, novel trips on lobster boat or video-dive boat, private charters.

Recreation & Nature: : Hike, bike, kayak, canoe, climb. Photograph on guided nature tours in Acadia National Park. Oceanarium, zoo, mini-golf & full golfing, horse wagons & horseback. Make day trips to quaint villages in Maine. Century-old reputation as 'America's Most Beautiful Island' and 'Queen of Resorts.'

Certified for Occupancy: Starting in 2007 all weekly rental properties must be Certified for Occupancy by town officials. Our property is duly certified. As you shop among properties, ask whether they are currently certified--to avoid a cancellation at the last minute. If you have to cancel, we immediately put your week back on the market and refund your outlay after someone else rents. Thankfully, cancellations are rare.

About Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet

On a one-week vacation to Bar Harbor in 1976, I fell in love with the Town and National Park. I signed a lease on a small shop--and never returned to Boston. A frequent fantasy of visitors; I was lucky enuf to make it work. For 25 years I owned Boston Baked Beads, The Dancing Deer &The Blue Heron Shop. I've served the Town on the Appeals Board & the restoration of the historic Hulls Cove Schoolhouse. I grew up living sweetly in small towns, but none was as beautiful as this one.

Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet purchased this house in 2000

Why Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

Acadia View offers a perfect location. Tucked into a low-traffic deadend behind a hill away from the bustle of the downtown, it still remains within walking or shuttle distance of all the fine shops and restaurants. And if you head the other direction by bike, auto, or free shuttle--it is only 1/2 mile into one of the most beautiful of our National Parks. You can't get much closer! I didn't build Acadia View, but I did recognize it as a gem--and bought it.

What makes this house unique

Acadia View offers in abundance the features that add up to a great vacation: a strategic location, a quiet neighborhood, large lawn with gas grill, and clean comfy quarters. Not fancy nor fragile, just a sensible setting from which you can easily explore the Town, the Park and the Island. And a neighborly place to return to for cooking, sunning, catching up by WiFi or TV--and quiet sleeping.

Dirty, tired and smelly

  • 1 of 5

I think some of the discrepancies in the reviews are that there are two properties next door to each other. The moment we entered the cottage the smell of mold and mildew overwhelmed us. The carpet was filthy. We immediately went out and bought room deodorizers and flip flops so we didn't have to walk on the floors. The kitchen itself was clean enough but very old, tired and dated. A number of winders didn't have screens or were broken. The sheets were clean and the washer and dryer worked. The bathroom was horrific. There wasn't one line of grout in there that wasn't black with mold. The shower rod was almost rusted through and the bottom actually wobbled when you stepped in. Disgusting isn't strong enough to describe this bathroom. The town of Bar Harbor has become very commercialized with every shop selling the same inexpensive touristy things. Seen one seen them all. On the other hand if you are a hiker, boater, or biker Arcadia State Park is wonderful.

We would definitely NOT RECOMMEND this property to any one.

Owner's Response: This review is from the same party that already posted a 1-star review--which I responded to--just a few days ago. In the first review, they liked the kitchen better. Is it fair or useful to post two 1-star ratings from the same party? If they post a few more, who benefits from that? The black grouting in the shower, BTW, is simply from manganese in the water--unsightly but harmless and, unfortunately, difficult or impossible to remove. Presumably, the 'wobbling bottom' refers to the thick rubber mat on the shower floor.

Old ,tired and smelly

  • 1 of 5

When we first entered the cottage we were overpowered by the smell of mold and mildew. The carpets were filthy. We made a trip to the store for room deodorizer to try and negate the smell and flip flops so we didn't have to touch the floors. The kitchen looked clean and all the appliances worked. The washer and dryer are new and do a good job. Then there was the bathroom! It is full of black, disgusting mold/mildew. The foldout futon in the living room is so broken down it is unusable as a seat. The rest of the furniture is very "well worn". Many of the windows don't work and as there are no window coverings there is no privacy. This cottage could be very nice if it was given some badly needed remodeling. We would not recommend this property in its current condition. It is old and smelly.

Owner's Response: This pet owner arrived a few hours early and phoned with some complaints. I wrote: "I tried phoning you but kept getting a busy signal. We'll bring further hand towels within an hour. The entry door, for some years, had traveling blinds. These were forever getting mangled by heart-broken dogs or by being drawn aside while in closed orientation. Finally, a visitor tugged the steel rod loose. I took it down, since this is a side entrance fully screened by bushes. The stripped handle in the window is new & needs to be fixed, I fully agree. I can get a handyman out in a day or so--a guy who has done repairs for 15 years--think Andy Griffith. He works 3 jobs in season & can't predict when he'll stop by--except that it will be during reasonable hours. If you are okay with him having a key in case you aren't in--let me know" Towels were delivered; there was no reply about repair. This is the first we've heard about a broken futon; it was new in June. It 'clicks' down and 'clicks' to restore the back. It may be the mechanism was just misunderstood; we'll check. Beige carpet was a poor choice for a place that gets pets, mud & coffee spills. It is stained but not "filthy." Given comments about the kitchen and appliances and, by default, the approval of the beds, deck, lawn and location near the national park--all beyond what you get at a motel--a 1-star rating is mighty low. The bathroom? Wouldn't anyone else have noticed if it was so bad?

Great place in Bar Harbor!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed for a week and had a wonderful time. This is a wonderful house that is close to everything. We are a family of four and had plenty of space to relax and enjoy our stay. The owner was very pleasant and a pleasure to deal with. We would certainly stay again!

What a wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

We want to thank Paul and Karen for a great week at Acadia View. Everything was fresh and clean, and I'll bet none of the furniture or appliances are more than a year or two old. The kids had a great time playing on the lawn, and we didn't worry about them because there was almost no traffic at any time of day. Absolutely silent at night. And yet the place is just down the road from the national park and also within easy reach of all the shops and restaurants. I feel that my stay in the Bar Harbor area was greatly enhanced by the feeling of comfort provided at Acadia View. It would be hard to find a more comfortable place in a more strategic location. We'll definitely be back--maybe with the dog next time!

Ignore bad review

  • 4 of 5

Overall, I'd rate this location as fantastic. I will say there was a cobweb or two, but the house was in no way dirty. If what you are looking for is top of the line, this may not be the place for you. But if you are looking for roomy, comfortable, and a great location, I'd say book this place immediately. We stayed in Acadia View B and was ecstatic to walk in after a 24 hour drive. You could easily sleep 8 with both sofas and the 2 bedrooms. The house is really close to town and my little sister was able to walk into Bar Harbor when my husband and I didn't want to go to the bars. Also, extremely quick and easy access to Acadia Park. The neighborhood is extremely quiet and we could barely hear the toddler that was above us in rental A. And there is a washer and dryer which I can imagine would be extra fantastic if you had children with you. If I ever make it back, I will not be looking to rent anywhere else. My ONLY complaint would be the temperamental coffee maker.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words. Your experience matches our perception of the Acadia View properties: not luxurious, but comfortable, 'complete' and in a great location. We've replaced the coffeemaker!
