About Edwina Huckle

John and Edwina, originally both from London, are now retired and came with their horses to The Farr Farm for peace and quiet and lovely rural views. After renovating the farmhouse and some of the buildings, they opened Becher's Cottage in 2006 for holidaymakers to enjoy. They continue to renovate and improve the farm and to look after their horses, dogs and cats. They particularly enjoy the slow and friendly pace of life here in South-East Wales and feel it is the best move they could ever have made! They enjoy meeting all their guests and sharing with them the peace and quiet of the beautiful Welsh countryside and spectacular views all around. The clear night sky has to be seen to be believed and they feel that the total silence by day and night is quite remarkable.

Edwina Huckle purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Edwina Huckle chose Monmouthshire

Becher's Cottage was an old barn on the farm. previously used for rearing calves and before that it had been a stable and open-ended cart shed with hayloft above. Edwina and John carefully converted it into a modern, comfortable cottage, which provides everything for a family holiday, while retaining original features, and it is situated in one of the last genuinely quiet places in the UK. Here there are rolling hills, ancient hedgerows and oak trees, pastures, long-distance views of mountains and quiet country lanes. In the evening you can hear owls and see bats, and at night the stars are bright in the silent darkness.

What makes this cottage unique

Quiet days and dark nights - no noise or light pollution. No one to disturb you except the birds and the bees. Far-reaching and unspoilt views, interesting walks, museums, caves, rivers and valleys, castles and churches, market towns and quiet country roads.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Once again a lovely welcome back to Becher's Cottage. We have thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful cottage and farm for the past three years. I am sure we will return again in the future...

a true delight

We had a wonderful time at Becher's cottage. The cottage is located in a rural farmland area. It is a converted horse stable on a working farm where the owners, John and Edwina live. The conversion is a great job and very comfortable. John and Edwina are great hosts. We had the opportunity to have drinks with them and hear their story about how they bought Farr farm, rebuilt the facilities and raise race horses. The cottage is easy car access to the sights in South Wales. John and Edwina will send you specific instructions on how to get to the cottage and I recommend you follow them exactly the first time. Many of the roads are one track and the GPS will often lead you on some that are much more narrow and in worse condition than others. Once you have done it according to their instructions, you will be able to apply judgement when you travel.

I read through the guest book and the thing that is a real testimony to the cottage is the number of repeat guests. One family has been coming annually for over 12 years.

If you are going to Wales, stay here. You will not be disappointed.

Very clean, comfortable and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Bechers Cottage is a real home from home. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay. All facilities are modern, very clean and well maintained. The garden was securely fenced to safely contain our dogs and provided views of the surrounding countryside. It's in a really peaceful and beautiful location. The owners are close by, friendly and helpful but not overly intrusive. We enjoyed a very relaxing break at Bechers and would love to return.

Lovely cosy cottage away from it all.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely comfortable cottage with everything you might need in excellent location. Away from it all but near enough to explore the Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons. Great warm cottage to come home to after a day of exploring. The owners went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We loved the horses, enclosed secure garden for both children and dog. We all had a lovely stay.

The River Wye and the Wye Valley are famous for their spectacular vistas and provide glorious walking, cycling and canoeing. It is where tourism was first invented and the bustling market towns of Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye are situated there. The Royal Forest of Dean, with its rich industrial history, has woodland walks, caves and adventures, and a host of different attractions, and arts and crafts. It is one of the best places for cycling with specific routes graded for difficulty and bicycles are easily available for hire in several places.

Social, economic and cultural history is richly illustrated by visits to the World Heritage Sites of Blaenavon and Tintern. In Bleanavon there is the Big Pit coal mine to explore and the recently restored ironworks, and Tintern of course has its famous Abbey on the banks of the Wye.

From the cottage you can see Skirrid Fawr and the Black Mountains which are within easy reach and they open the way to Hay Bluff and The Brecon Beacons National Park.

Monmouthshire has become a magnet for top-class restaurants. Just ask us for our current recommendations. Becher's Cottage is 5 minutes away from The Bell at Skenfrith, 15 minutes from The Walnut Tree and 25 minutes from The Foxhunter and The Hardwick. Various pubs offer good food and traditional surroundings, with real ales and local cider. The Abergavenny Food Festival grows in stature every September and quality local produce is always available in a variety of specialist shops.

There are horse shows and agricultural shows throughout the year, National Hunt racing at Cheltenham and Chepstow, and golf at Celtic Manor Resort, recent venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup, and at many other attractive courses including the Rolls of Monmouth, one of the prettiest, and former residence of the Rolls family, famous in aviation and motor cars!

Cardiff provides world-class opera in the Wales Millennium Centre, international rugby and football at the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Bay hosts Dr Who and a huge variety of entertainments and restaurants. Hereford has its cathedral with the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library in the cloisters.

Ross-on-Wye and Ledbury are beautiful market towns full of character and Hay on Wye has the Literary Festival in May. There are a number of food, wine, cheese, ale and cider festivals throughout the year in different towns and villages.

Encompassing a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with spectacular castles and acres of ancient woodland, the Wye Valley and Royal Forest of Dean has become a huge draw for film and TV makers, hosting multi-million pound movies alongside smaller productions. The region's unspoilt countryside, which spans both England and Wales, and the 3 counties of Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, has appeared on the big and small screen much more often that many people will have realised. This lovely landscape, with the River Wye winding through, has also inspired writers and poets through the centuries.
