A good holiday despite...
Accommodation found when looking for wheelchair accessible accommodation. Booked on that basis. Could not get accurate answer to a specific question despite 2 weeks notice. I was told there was a step. There was a step and 2 more making it difficult to manoeuvre the wheelchair. Not helped by the entrance being more than half covered by a tall overgrown hedge. Wish I had packed a pair of shears.! Picked the keys up from the local wine shop but no indication of which apartment it was so it involved knocking on a few doors.
We did enjoy the apartment and the holiday. The location was ideal for us and I would return. A few easily found instructions on how the tv setup works and the cooking range would have helped at the start. We found the cooker/hob folder on a lower shelf in the pantry on the Friday. Putting it on the kitchen table or worktop would have been better. I didn’t expect to have to search for things like that. Luckily we had smart phones and used those instead of any other instructions.
A lovely apartment but since we also paid a ‘booking fee’ to an agency I would have liked a bit more professionalism from the organisation and attention to detail.
There is a huge choice of pubs, cafes and restaurants close by to suit all budgets. A 5 minute stroll from Walmer Castle. The coast path runs from the front door to Deal town centre and the Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, or south to the beautiful villages of Kingsdown and St Margaret's at Cliff, then up over the White Cliffs to Dover and Folkestone. Spacious and practical accommodation with solid oak floors throughout. Elegant (but kid-proof) contemporary furniture. Fully fitted kitchen with walk in larder. If it rains there is high speed WiFi and a 37" widescreen TV with BT Vision HD and BluRay player.
The building is on the sea front at Walmer Beach. Walmer is an expansive shingle beach studded with wild grasses and fennel and backing onto well maintained greens popular with runners and dog-walkers. The beach extends unbroken for a mile or two to Kingsdown in the south, where there is a great beachside pub, The Zetland Arms. To the north you can walk up past Deal pier to the Sandwich golf courses. There is an excellent beginners sailing club and fishing boats offer days trips from Deal.
The apartment is within a few miles of four golf courses: Royal Cinque Ports, Princes and Royal St Georges are three of the finest links courses in the country with the latter having hosted the British Open in 2011. For beginners (like us) Walmer and Kingsdown is our closest club on the cliffs to the south. 35 quid for a round of 18 holes with fantastic views over the channel to France.
