About the property

Hosts 12 Guests In A Romantic Castle By The Sea

Medieval and renaissance stately rooms and cellars, walled garden, 4 bedrooms with bathroom en suite, plus another 5 bedrooms.

You will be the lord of the manor for a week, overlooking the estate and the sea from the keep (the highest tower, with terrace) or receiving in the Grande Salle, previously used to render justice. Dine in front of a fire-place big enough to roast an ox.

Just 10 km West of Cherbourg, your gate to la Hague, Val de Saire, and the rest of Normandy.

300 m from the beach… where the British navy landed in 1522.. and 1758 (trust the Admiralty for keeping good records), and with full view of the coast.

From your windows you see the site of one of the famous naval battles of the American civil war betweenf the Confederate Alabama and the U.S.S. Kearsarge.

Beautiful walks, short and long, from your doorstep.

It will be your base to all the destinations Normandy is famous for: Mont Saint Michel, D-Day beaches, Bayeux Tapestry.

Conveniently near to all shops, services. Most important, our small region is famous for its produce from surf and turf: sea bass, monkfish, salmon, lobster, oysters, lamb, beef and pork.

Visit the farmers markets, cook it yourself or get treated in the fine restaurants nearby.

Normandy has many 16th c. castles, but very few of them stand by the sea, and even fewer open to guests. Come and join the magic of Manoir de Dur-Ecu !

About Philippe and Cherry Rene-Bazin

Cherry about Philippe: My husband is very much of local stock, with his family having been in the region for more than 400 years. Every year I discover new 'cousins' with a common ancestor in 1840 or so. He was so afraid that I wouldn't come to remote Normandy that he specified in our wedding contract that we would stay here at least 3 weeks in a row (just kidding !).

Philippe about Cherry: My wife being from Hong Kong and very international, I was wondering how she would take to the place. Now she is the one who wants to stay here all the time, while I have to remember her that work and overseas friends require our presence elsewhere !

Philippe and Cherry Rene-Bazin purchased this castle in 1750

Why Philippe and Cherry Rene-Bazin chose Cherbourg area

My family has purchased the place around 1750 but the first mention of the castle is in the 1300s. The castle received a couple of bombs a few days before the Normandy landings, so my grand-mother, my uncle and I have been at work to restore the place to its former glory.

Please come and appreciate this labor of love for a unique place.

Château or Castle or Manoir or Manor ?

Most French visitors call our place a Château, and English visitors call it a Castle. However the traditional name in north-western France (Normandy, Brittany) is a Manoir, however spectacular is the architecture. Basically it is a Manoir when the lord of the manor belonged to the local nobility and was directly in charge of the estate. Château usually belonged to aristocrats who were serving the king and delegating the running of the estate.

What makes this castle unique

You will love this unique site between the sea and a wooded hill.
