Kilauea Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2) Permit Z-IV-2015-32

Come to the Garden Hideaway at Lotus Farm. Experience the Hawaii most tourists never see. This soulful, laid-back slice of paradise is set among three lush and lovingly maintained acres on a mature, established organic tropical fruit farm and palm nursery. We are only a five minute drive from several secluded, pristine beaches and rivers.

The Hideaway was created with your every comfort in mind. Your home away from home is tucked away down its own private drive and enclosed in a serene, tropical Asian style courtyard. A comfortable outdoor lounging lanai, under a pergola of tropical vines, looks out over the peaceful meditation garden. The open floor plan and high pinewood ceiling create a sense of spaciousness in the light, airy, uncluttered and tastefully done 500 sq. ft. one room cottage with dining, living and sleeping areas.

Our guests rave about the enclosed outdoor shower and bath area that is directly off the indoor 1/2 bath. The cottage is done in shades of apricot, beige, gold and green and decorated with Hawaiian art prints and furnished in bamboo, wicker and rattan. The comfortable king size bed is covered in good quality linens. Plush robes are also provided.

The Hideaway comes stocked with goods for a light breakfast. We provide freshly roasted, organic, hand picked Kona coffee beans with coffee grinder and coffee maker, an assortment of teas, sweeteners, whatever types of milk you desire along with organic yogurt, granola, macadamia nuts and fresh fruits in season. Fresh, homemade beverages such as coconut water, ginger lemonade, macadamia nut milk, tangelo and orange juice are also available at your request.

The kitchenette area has a refrigerator to store your snacks and takeaway food as well as a bar size sink. Our Home Stay permit does not allow us to provide a hot plate, microwave or toaster oven for cooking. Guests are welcome to use the Weber Grill in the Hideaway's covered BBQ area just beyond the enclosed garden gate. We provide knives and cutting board, blender, juicer, glasses, dinnerware and silverware for your use. There is a clothes washer and dryer inside the cottage.

The cottage comes stocked with yoga mats, beach towels, beach blanket, beach chairs, boogie boards, mask and snorkels, beach umbrella, picnic cooler and shopping bags for your excursions.

Our central location is ideal. We are just 50 minutes from the Lihue airport and 35 minutes from the end of the road in Haena, making anywhere on the island an easy half day excursion. The small local flavored town of Kilauea is only five minutes from the Hideaway. There you will find a great bakery, shops, restaurants, yoga studio, pharmacy, post office, gas station and other conveniences. We are longtime Kauai residents who are happy to share our favorite spots with you as well as setting up special requests such as in house massage and other holistic health treatments.

We established our working farm nearly 35 years ago. Lotus Farm and Nursery was one of the first organic farms on Kauai. You'll see us around the property working the land and tending the nursery. Our orchards produce macadamia nuts, coconuts, oranges, tangelos, lemons, limes, coconuts, avocados, mango, lychee and longon. We sell our fruit commercially to brokers in Canada, fruit stands on Kauai and local residents who come by to pick up their special orders. Our nursery supplies landscapers with exotic palms, tropical ornamental plants and fruit trees.

'It has been a pleasure staying in such a beautiful, thoughtfully maintained place. The outdoor shower and tub have been my favorites, but the whole cottage and gardens are great.'

'What a perfect honeymoon spot. It is so romantic and secluded.'

'We've had such a beautiful visit here in your sublime love nest.'

About Lisa Breen

We love our life here on the north shore of Kauai and enjoy the healthy lifestyle and unique sense of community that Kauai offers. We feel very fortunate and blessed to be able to offer visitors the unique experience of staying on a working organic tropical farm and nursery.

Lisa Breen purchased this cottage in 1981

Why Lisa Breen chose Kauai

Our farm is a labor of love and never ending work in progress. David purchased raw land in 1981 and planted orchards and gardens. Over the years his deep love for and study of the plant world has made him an expert on palms, cycads, flowering trees and fruit trees. We are world travelers and designed the Hideaway as a perfect getaway with everything we would be looking for in a home away from home. Our location is ideal in every way. Minutes to stunning beaches and Kilauea town, yet still in the country.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It is the perfect place to relax for a couple. You get a house for you alone in the middle of a magnificent garden with outside shower and bath tub. A beautiful interior with attention to detail in Hawaiian style and delicious organic fruits. From there you can easily reach all the amazing beaches of the northeastern part of the island.

Romantic Tranquil Jungle Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

The Garden Hideaway was a magical place to start our honeymoon. The cottage is surrounded by lush foliage and filled with every comfort you might need. Lisa was extremely welcoming and open to answering any questions and offering local recommendations throughout our stay. We arrived to a fridge with fresh yogurt, coconut water, and local granola as well as a fruit bowl filled with delicious local fruits, freshly picked macadamia nuts and the most enormous and delicious avocado I've ever had. The outdoor tub and shower are very romantic and lovely. The cozy white bath robes are a great touch and we slept with the windows open and had an amazing breeze. Lisa and her husband put great care into making this cottage a true and relaxing oasis. It's also perfectly situated to allow for easy access to many points of interest on the island. And there's an awesome fruit stand just around the corner where we bought juicy starfruit for 35 cents a piece. Don't hesitate when deciding whether to stay at the Garden Hideaway. It's a magical place with the most welcoming and generous hosts. MAHALO LISA

Owner's Response: Thank you, Jane. We are so happy you and Pete enjoyed your stay! This couple headed out to backpack the Na Pali trail after they left the Hideaway. We stored their luggage at our place so they didn't have to worry about leaving it unattended in their rental car. We are always happy to go the extra mile for our guests. We want everyone who stays on our farm to feel our aloha and take home treasured memories of their stay at the Garden Hideaway.

Lovely, peaceful, cozy

  • 5 of 5

This was my second time at the Garden Hideaway, and the reason I returned is because the space is so lovely — beautiful to look at, comfortable to live in, far from the crowds and close to every place I want to be. The recent renovations have made the cottage even more wonderful. Lisa and David are gracious hosts, providing fruit and macadamia nuts from their farm, granola, coffee and creamers, and fresh-made coconut water. My favorite part of the cottage is the outdoor shower and tub; we saw a few shooting stars while sitting n the tub at night, gazing upward. I really can't imagine a more peaceful and welcoming place than the Garden Hideaway. I will always return there because it defines Kauai to me.

Owner's Response: Thank you Vicki, for your kind words. We also have a special vacation home that we return to again and again. We wouldn't think about staying any where else. The Hideaway is cozy, clean and comfortable as well as romantic, private and magical. I'm glad you had such a wonderful time on Kauai using our farm as your base. It's location is ideal! We look forward to hosting you again someday.

A comfortable, relaxing, private getaway.

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is not for everyone. If you don't like farm noises (especially early morning roosters) and you need a place that's bug and lizard-free, best get a condo in Princeville. But if you can put up with a few minor inconveniences, the privacy, romance, and charm of this lovely hideaway will leave an indelible, lifelong impression. Every time we came "home" we felt like we disappeared into our own little world. Thanks, Lisa for all the thoughtful touches that you included. Your cabin was as advertised and then some. This was a unique and wonderful experience and we are already starting to save so we can enjoy an encore.

Owner's Response: Thank you Robert for your lovely review! The Hideaway is special place. A tucked away home away from home for our guests. We do make an effort to keep the wild chickens under control and have recently had a thorough sweep of our farm. You'll still hear the faint, distant sound of them from neighboring properties, but we've removed them from our grounds.

Buggy, but cute

  • 4 of 5

I'll start my review by saying the hosts were lovely, which was great for us. We spent 6 nights at the hideaway, and had the following thoughts:

The pros:

- Very nice hosts who chatted with us about the island and gave us good suggestions of how to spend our days

Off the beaten path

- Fairly good location closer to the North Shore (we MUCH preferred the North side to the South)

- Hideaway came with nice beach chairs and umbrella for beach days, and had a well-equipped kitchen and grill for cooking

- Good yogurt-and-fruit breakfasts provided

The cons (at least for us):

- I thought the price was a bit expensive, compared to some other properties. Honestly, I would probably spend $60 - $75 less every night and stay in a condo near Priceville (even though it's less charming than the organic farm)

- The spot was too buggy for us to sit outside (although bug spray was provided)

- We realized that when we kept the lights on near the bed at night, we were infiltrated by little "mealy bugs." Also, the roosters crowing were pretty darn loud because you're so close to where they hang out.

Overall, this place was cute and as comfortable as could be. Just keep in mind that this really is like staying in a garden! :)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words about our hospitality. We want everyone who stays on our farm to feel welcome and taken care of. Yes, I'd have to agree that the bugs and mosquito were about as bad as we can remember during your stay. Remnants of Hurricane Darby made for hot, muggy conditions with little trade winds. Believe me, even long timers were remarking about it. Unfortunately, I don't think staying in a condo would have kept you from them, as they were plentiful everywhere! That being said, I think it's important for travelers to find the right fit for their own preferences. The Garden Hideaway at Lotus Farm was designed for folks who enjoy being surrounded by nature, away from the other guests that a hotel or condo complex would have. I appreciate your honest review! Aloha, Lisa

Perfect Kauai Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for our honeymoon on Kauai and could not have picked a better place. My wife loved the fact that it was on an organic farm and loved having the trees everywhere. Lisa, our landlord, was super accommodating and provided us with the best coconut water we've ever had, organic milks and snacks, fresh fruit, and some awesome coffee. The outdoor shower and tub were great too! For visitors from the mainland, know that this is Hawaii and you are in a more treed and moist area which means you get some mosquitos, cockroaches, and spiders. If you make sure to close the doors, they stay outside and I'd suggest mosquito repellent to those who don't like mosquitos. The nights provided a nice breeze so although there is no AC, the temperature was always great.

For future renters who are looking to get away from the city life, find a cute small place for just the two of you or just you, have a home located centrally between Lihue and Hanalei, and just want to relax with your fresh cup of coconut water or coffee and a tray of delicious fruit, THIS IS YOUR VACATION RENTAL.

Thank you Lisa!
