Come to the Garden Hideaway at Lotus Farm. Experience the Hawaii most tourists never see. This soulful, laid-back slice of paradise is set among three lush and lovingly maintained acres on a mature, established organic tropical fruit farm and palm nursery. We are only a five minute drive from several secluded, pristine beaches and rivers.
The Hideaway was created with your every comfort in mind. Your home away from home is tucked away down its own private drive and enclosed in a serene, tropical Asian style courtyard. A comfortable outdoor lounging lanai, under a pergola of tropical vines, looks out over the peaceful meditation garden. The open floor plan and high pinewood ceiling create a sense of spaciousness in the light, airy, charming and tastefully done 500 sq. ft. one room cottage with dining, living and sleeping areas.
Our guests rave about the enclosed outdoor shower and bath area that is directly off the indoor 1/2 bath. The cottage is done in shades of apricot, beige, gold and green and decorated with Hawaiian art prints and furnished in bamboo, wicker and rattan. The comfortable king size bed is covered in good quality linens. Plush robes are also provided.
The Hideaway comes stocked with goods for a light breakfast. We provide freshly roasted, organic, hand picked Kona coffee beans with coffee grinder and coffee maker, an assortment of teas, sweeteners, whatever types of milk you desire along with organic yogurt, granola, macadamia nuts and fresh fruits in season.
The kitchenette area has a refrigerator to store your snacks and takeaway food as well as a bar size sink. Our Home Stay permit does not allow us to provide a hot plate, microwave or toaster oven for cooking. Guests are welcome to use the Weber Grill in the Hideaway's covered BBQ area just beyond the enclosed garden gate. We provide knives and cutting board, blender, juicer, glasses, dinnerware and silverware for your use. There is a clothes washer and dryer inside the cottage. We are a smoke free environment, inside and out.
The cottage comes stocked with yoga mats, beach towels, beach blanket, beach chairs, boogie boards, mask and snorkels, beach umbrella, picnic cooler and shopping bags for your excursions.
Our central location is ideal. We are just 50 minutes from the Lihue airport and 35 minutes from the end of the road in Haena, making anywhere on the island an easy half day excursion. The small local flavored town of Kilauea is only five minutes from the Hideaway. There you will find a great bakery, shops, restaurants, yoga studio, pharmacy, post office, gas station and other conveniences. We are longtime Kauai residents who are happy to share our favorite spots with you as well as setting up special requests such as in house massage and other holistic health treatments.
We established our working farm nearly 35 years ago. Lotus Farm and Nursery was one of the first organic farms on Kauai. You'll see us around the property working the land and tending the nursery. Our orchards produce macadamia nuts, coconuts, oranges, tangelos, lemons, limes, coconuts, avocados, mango, lychee and longon. We sell our fruit commercially to brokers in Canada, fruit stands on Kauai and local residents who come by to pick up their special orders. Our nursery supplies landscapers with exotic palms, tropical ornamental plants and fruit trees.

About Lisa and David Breen
We love our life here on the north shore of Kauai and enjoy the healthy lifestyle and unique sense of community that Kauai offers. We feel very fortunate to be able to offer visitors the unique experience of staying on a working organic tropical farm and nursery.
Lisa and David Breen purchased this Cottage in 1981
Why Lisa and David Breen chose Kilauea
Our farm is a labor of love and never ending work in progress. David purchased raw land in 1981 and planted orchards and gardens. Over the years his deep love for and study of the plant world has made him an expert on palms, cycads, flowering trees and fruit trees. We are world travelers and designed the Hideaway as a perfect getaway with everything we would be looking for in a home away from home. Our location is ideal in every way. Minutes to stunning beaches and Kilauea town, yet still in the country.

Lisa and David's hideaway was an entirely worthwhile experience. Aesthetically, its stunning. It is set back behind a palm nursery, and the drive up to the cottage is lined with towering palms. It feels beyond secluded; it feels prehistoric. The cottage itself is well designed, and beautifully landscaped. The pictures tell it true!
The cottage had everything we needed. It even had some things we didn't know we needed. The basics are obvious and amply provided (towels, linens, toilet paper) I definitely played the ukulele, took a few baths, used the spa-like bathrobe, borrowed the snorkeling gear, beach chairs and beach towels. The numerous guidebooks were very helpful and informative too. Generously, Lisa and David stocked the fridge and the fruit basket. We enjoyed local coffee all week, and I have a new found appreciation for "mac" nuts.
The comfort level in the cottage is very high. The bed, first of all, is a true king with a comfy mattress. The lack of footboard is always appreciated, since my husband is 6'4". The bathroom is great. It is technically a 1/2 bath inside, with the shower and tub outside. It is so refreshing. I can't imagine why anyone would ever shower indoors in Hawaii. I wouldn't. The claw foot tub is really a win, as well. It seems to be just a bit oversized beyond a regular bathtub, which makes the experience that much more luxurious. Also, perhaps things have accumulated from other guests, or they were provided by the hosts, but in any case there were epsom salts, bubble bath, and plenty of other bath products.
Lastly, the hosts, Lisa and David, seem like genuine, warm, lovely people. They were open and generous with information when we arrived, but would volunteer little island tidbits throughout our stay. They were always smiling if you passed them during the day, and very helpful.
My only complaint is that we had to leave. I can't wait to come back.
Thank you so much for this lovely, detailed review. It was a pleasure hosting the two of you! We always trust that the Hideaway will attract guests who are a perfect fit for our farm and the little cottage we have created for their Kauai experience. Anyone looking for a charming, secluded, comfortable place to stay that is surrounded by beauty in a convenient location will not be disappointed when they book a stay at the Hideaway. It's true- the photos tell the truth and nothing makes us happier than knowing we have provided a setting where our guests can create magical memories! Can't wait to host you again.

Second Stay at the Hideaway
My wife and I enjoyed our second stay at the Hideaway as much as we did the first time. Lisa is an amazing hostess, and David is equally accommodating. I could write a book of praise for the Hideaway, as well as for Lisa and David, but past guests who have left reviews beat me to the punch. We look toward a third return in the near future. ( :
Thank you for your lovely review. We were so pleased to host the two of you again! We are always flattered when our guests continue to return over the years. You were wise to reserve your dates early, as our calendar seem fill up with reservations months in advance.

This was a truly unique place to stay on Kauai- so glad I came across it when I was planning my visit- not my first experience with VRBO but it was for my husband. He has always been a hotel kinda guy so it took some persuading but he was duly impressed. Would highly recommend!
Dear Marcia, Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad the Hideaway won your husband over and that you both enjoyed your stay. The cottage is a wonderful place to relax in comfort and privacy. It provides are very different experience than a resort.
Garden Island Garden Hideaway
Best week of relaxation! The weather was slightly cool, but we had the best time relaxing and enjoying the awesome Kauai scenery. The place is really comfortable, convenient and lovely. Don't miss the golf cart tour of Makai golf course and the helicopter tour of Mt. Wai'ale'ale. Both highlights. The neighboring town of Kilauea is both chill and fun at the same time. Try the Metamorphose yoga, the Fish Market and the Bistro (Fish Rockets!). Nearby Hana'lei is a little more lively at night, with more great restaurants. The hike at the end of the rode near Ke'e Beach is also a winner. We also drove around to the other side of the island for Waimea Canyon and enjoyed MacArthur Beach. But we really prefer the North Shore. The accommodation at Lotus Farm is perfectly set up and Lisa is a super helpful host. We're definitely spoiled by fresh citrus every morning!
Quiet & Relaxing Hideaway
We had a wonderful stay at The Garden Hideaway. Lisa made us feel welcome right away. The accommodations were very nice with a comfortable bed, our own bbq, and outdoor shower & bath. We had some nice gecko visitors, the relaxing sound of rain on the roof at night, and the awakening to the sounds of roosters. Overall a great experience. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind review! It was a pleasure to meet the two of you. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay on our farm over the holidays. Kauai can be quite busy this time of year and it's nice to have a peaceful spot to tuck into.
Tranquil & Tropical
We loved our stay! Just what we needed. Felt like we were sleeping outside w breezes from 3 sides of bungalow.
Clean, tidy, & the absolute best outdoor shower!!!
Extra amenities were thoughtful: beach chairs, cooler, etc.
Thank you Lisa & David for sharing your farm- the fruit and extras were delicious, too!!
Stay here. Perfect location. LOVED IT!
Thank you for your kind words. It was a pleasure to meet the two of you. I know you love the north shore of Kauai and have visited many times, so I'm happy you appreciated our unique location- convenient, yet tucked away. The Hideaway is a special place for guests seeking a tranquil retreat- whether you are returning to the farm after a day of adventures or just kicking back and enjoying a day at the cottage.
