Our all-season home was built to our design in 1994 and gets its name, Emerald Surf, from the emerald color of the Lake Michigan waters that are viewable from almost every room in the house at about 2PM on sunny summer days. It was remodeled in 2015 to add two bedrooms, giving four bedrooms facing the lake and permitting us to have two king and two queen beds with plenty of space for our current extended family of ten. Ground floor master bedroom has a full bath and three upstairs bedrooms share two full bathrooms. Fully equipped kitchen has new refrigerator and dishwasher in 2015 and a phone to call for reservations. A half bath adjoins the kitchen. The living/dining area has a Door County real stone fireplace that soars 26’ to it peak, flanked by three stories of glass windows, on the water side of the house. Two TV rooms allow children and adults their own space. WiFi is strong throughout the house and in the outdoor screen house. Three bedrooms have electronic docking stations to accommodate four-fold charging needs. The attached garage has been repurposed to provide storage for bikes, kayaks, canoes, golf clubs, and beach toys that we and renters bring to enjoy Door County. It also provides a place to hang towels and to clean sandy feet and shoes. Outdoor amenities include balconies on two bedrooms, two large decks, a 12’x12’ screen house, gas grill, Weber charcoal grill, 40’ pier (seasonal), sand beach, fire pit, s’more equipment, and outdoor shower for those who like to commune with nature.
Renters are responsible for their own linens (sheets and towels) but blankets and pillows are provided.
I am a climate scientist at Iowa State University. Our family has enjoyed coming to Door County at least once a year for about 35 years, at first staying with friends but eventually building our own home. We have decided that this is now our family retreat, since we are getting scattered across the country and have reduced incentive to come back to the family home in Ames, Iowa.
Bryn Takle purchased this house in 1994
We built our home on this location in 1994 from a design I developed. The open design enables us to simultaneously view, from most public areas in the house, the lake, the stone fireplace, and the soaring pine and cedar trees between the lake and the home. Coffee mugs, beer and wine glasses, and wall décor reveal the personal interests of our family. We did not build the home for the purpose of renting it, but our schedules do not permit us to spend the entire warm season in Door County so we have decided to share the home with others.
The property is spacious and provides both privacy and gathering locations. It is a good launching point for enjoying the scenery, hiking, biking, golfing, boating, fishing, eating in or out, or just exploring Door County. You can walk the beach for miles in either direction without seeing a “keep out” sign or being yelled at. The lake influence means that the temperature rarely gets above 80 degrees between the house and the beach even in July and August. You will need a light jacket at your beach campfire in the evenings. The house is fully air conditioned for the few days that the humidity gets high enough to be uncomfortable.
Beautiful location, mere steps to the water !
Veey clean and super spacious home , we loved our stay!
This property is better than advertised! We spent a weekend with friends (3 couples total) and thoroughly enjoyed the house, the beach, the water, and the great location close to everything we wanted to do. The house is bigger than we expected, is clean and is very well maintained. Great amenities including a ton of board games which we put to good use well into the evening. We will be visiting again due to the great experience we had at this property! Thanks!!!
We have come up every year and stayed in various VRBO places during the fall. This weekend we had a group of 8. The house was super clean, and the house, kitchen, and property had everything that we needed. We were very warm comfortable! We enjoyed having fires on the beach while listening to the waves crash and surrounded by great company. I had texted the owner asking about extra table leaves and he called me immediately and directed me as to where I could find them. The beach and water was super clean and gorgeous. Great place to sit and watch sunrise every morning (especially with a cup of joe). Plenty of parking and very private, I would stay there again in a heartbeat. Our group had a blast and we all had nothing but great things to say about this house. Thanks again!
We stayed for a week in August, and loved every minute. The house is spacious and well-furnished, and the beach is amazing. Our kids couldn't have been happier. Don't forget to visit Cave Point while you're in the area.
My friends and I rented this property for a wedding in the area. The house worked perfect for us. Bryn was very quick to respond with any questions and concerns that we had. I would highly recomend this property.
Our party of eight (4 couples) had a wonderful time at Emerald Surf. The view of Lake Michigan is great. The bedrooms are separated nicely to provide privacy. The house is well furnished. Walking the beach in each direction was enjoyed by everyone. Kayaking in the morning was great fun, as well as biking and jumping off the cliff at Cave Point. The location is great for getting to Peninsula State Park and the ferry to go to Washington Island (great biking) and Rock Island. The women enjoyed shopping in Ephraim, Sister Bay, and Egg Harbor. We enjoyed Wilsons in Ephraim for lunch and ice cream.
