About Emmanuelle and John LEDBETTER

We are a Franco-American family (with 3 children). We live in Santa Barbara, California and this is our little home in France.

Why Emmanuelle and John LEDBETTER chose Cote Basque - Biarritz

We were first attracted to Biarritz by the surfing, but we settled there because of the charm of the Pays Basque.

What makes this apartment unique

We love to check the surf throughout the day from the Côte des Basques and enjoy the breath taking views of Spain. We also like to get coffee in the morning or sangria at sunset from the outdoor café & tapas bar on the Côte des Basques. We enjoy eating at the great Basque restaurant, the Cidrerie Hernani, down the street - a local favorite! Our bakery is Le Fournil du Rocher, two blocks away.

Perfect location for beach & Biarritz

  • 5 of 5

A perfect apartment for holidaying in Biarritz, a short work from the town, beaches and restaurants.

The property was cozy and perfectly equipped for our short 6 day stay in Biarritz, well equipped and maintained and Emmanuelle was quick and responsive to email questions and very helpful and Thomas, their son was the perfect on site host to welcome us and provide top tips on where to shop, eat and beaches to go to.

I travelled with my wife and teenage daughter who found plenty to do not only going to the beach but shopping in the many boutiques in the town.

The only challenge we found was parking, which Emmanuelle had warned us about , so the hire car we had was left in the Gare du Midi car park and we walked and used public transport throughout our stay, the bus cost €1.00 per journey and took the train to San Sebastian for the day which was easy cost effective way to travel across the border.

All in all this property was the perfect place to stay and experience all that Biarritz has to offer, so thank you Emmanuelle and Thomas, we will be back!!

Best wishes Simon, Jayne and Olivia

This is a very comfortable place to stay, with an ideal location, close to the beach, Les Halles, downtown. Good bed (s), kitchen, washing machine, equipped well.

Nice escape from winter in Finland

  • 4 of 5

I spent February and March living in this nice cottage. It did serve me well as base in examining the Pays Basques.

As I am challenged in my ability walk around I enjoyed Biarritz mainly by biking. It is charming and interesting city with a lot to see. All services are very close to the cottage and living without a car is also possible. There was also a free bus circulating the city and bus stop near the cottage.

The beautiful seaside is close and there are lots of beaches to choose from. The Bayonne is very beautiful old town to visit and lots of interesting targets to go.

The cottage was equipped with all necessities – only thing I missed was dishwasher. Alexandre and his team were very helpful and I had no trouble at all.

I can recommend this cottage to all.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Pekka. We are very pleased you made our place your home for a couple months and that you took full advantage of all the exploring there is to do around, even with limited walking ability. Bikes & bus are great way to go around in this town and beyond. Kiitos!

Perfect location, cozy and homey cottage, helpful owners -- just what we wanted!

  • 5 of 5

I can't recommend this cottage highly enough -- especially for families with young children. I stayed for one week with my husband and two small daughters -- a 2-year-old and a 6-month-old. I was truly sad to leave -- it felt like it had become our home.

Emmanuelle was responsive (and very patient!) to all my questions about the cottage and how it would work for my young children. (Such as could we leave the shutters open in their room in the August heat and not worry about an intruder? Not an issue because of the clever ways the shutters can be closed, she patiently explained -- and was so correct.) She even arranged for a travel cot for the baby to sleep in. She really went above and beyond what she needed to do to be helpful and make us feel welcome.

Once we arrived, it really felt like we were staying in a home. The location also couldn't be better. Every morning my daughters and I would open the shutters and take big breaths of the sea air. So close to the market, the bakeries, the beaches, and the downtown.

We didn't have a car and never missed it. We took the bus from the airport, walked the few blocks from the bus stop to the cottage, and walked everywhere else after that.

Some other highlights:

Fast wifi -- so we could stream youtube videos of french lessons! And listen to the BBC in the morning.

Lots of helpful binders of information about the town.

Useful leftovers from previous visitors -- such as beach toys, rain umbrellas, some very good books, and even a beach umbrella that we used every day.

Regular communication from Emmanuelle checking in on our visit.

Like other reviewers noted, the door and front windows do open right up onto the street and sidewalk. But even with two children, we were not troubled by the noise or the presence of people walking by. There seems to a courtesy rule that people walking by don't peek in! I put the pram in front of the open door and I never worried that my toddler would run into the street.

Other reviewers also commented on the "coziness" of the cottage. Yes, it's small -- but that was part of the fun -- all being together. And there was a lovely park around the corner and the beach just down the road if anyone needed to get away for a moment of silence (often necessary with 2 young children).

I really can't recommend this place highly enough! I already hope to return.

Cozy, perfect location for Biarritz

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at this property to find it as described, well appointed, located and perfectly suited to relax and reorganize after two weeks of traveling. Parking was a challenge, however after finding a spot we did not have to use a car because everything is located within walking distance. That includes beaches, shopping, markets, banks, post office, restaurants, and more.

The property was well equipped for preparing great meals from local market purchases. Although the unit has a good washing machine, it was just as easy to make a trip to the local laundry and shop the nearby market while our larger load was drying. Of course a daily visit to the boulangerie was a must. We found the Basque restaurant only a half block down the street to be our favorite.

It wasn't until we walked to the city center and encountered the busy crowds did we realize how nice it was to be away from the hustle and bustle of the resort crowd, only a short ten minute walk away.

The owner and property manager were helpful and their recommendations were excellent. The unit is perfect for couples or small families looking for a relaxing beach or coastal vacation. The park next door is perfect for small children, or quiet reading.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful apartment and we hope to be able to return soon.
