Rustic Elegance in Lakeside Cabin Minutes from Cuyuna Bike Trails
About Vrbo #1148179
We are Don & Cindy Engen. After retiring from the US Army, we built this cabin, living here for 13 years. In 2014, we had the opportunity to teach on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. We still live on Kwajalein. Not living in our cabin, and not willing to put it up for sale, we decided to let others enjoy all that it has to offer. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoyed living here!
Vrbo #1148179 purchased this Cabin in 2001
Why Vrbo #1148179 chose Deerwood
After having traveled the world during 20+ years of active duty in the Army, we chose to build our cabin in a small town in a location that offered four distinct seasons, each with their own unique beauties. It's nice being away from life in the big city.
What makes this Cabin unique
It's a great area to "get away from it all." The local bike trails are truly world class, and are only getting better. The recreational opportunities offered by the local lakes are unlimited. Local hunting and fishing are top notch. Antiquing just doesn't get any better. The fall colors rival that of any place on earth. You can have all that, plus the quiet beauty of a campfire on [almost private] Black Lake. Here you'll really find what being "Up North at the Lake" is all about. Come and enjoy it!

This house is everything a family needs for a relaxing getaway to the lake. Every small detail has been attended to and the property managers (Brad and Eli) could not be more helpful. The lake is quiet, the amenities are plentiful (paddle boards, canoe, paddle boat, Lilly pad float, etc.), and the off-the-dock fishing for the kids was active. Simply a great house offering a great family experience.
Fabulous Weekend Retreat
We stayed here for a 4 day weekend over the 4th of July and had a wonderful experience. The property is very spacious and comfortable with a very nice wrap around deck. The highlight for us was relaxing on the lakeside deck while the kids swam and played on the Lily Pad and swimming dock. This property is also very close to Crosby which has several nice restaurants and a brewery that we visited one evening. We would definitely stay at this property again and highly recommend it to others!
Another Great Stay
This was our family's second trip to this house, and it was even better than last year. A few improvements were made in the last year including comfy new furniture in the basement. Brad, the property manager, is friendly and responsive to needs. The house is spacious and well appointed. The only challenge we had is that the air temperature downstairs is quite cold compared with the upstairs and the downstairs bathroom floor was icy cold. I'm sure in the hot summer, the cool basements is wonderful. On cooler days, you may want a sweater and some slippers. Overall, this is a clean, well-cared for home with lots of space and amenities. We had a wonderful weekend!
Our stay at this property was wonderful from the very start. True to its description the home was beautiful and the lake was wonderful. It is a smaller lake, but more than big enough for any activity you may want to do. Plus a huge perk was the water temperature. Its been a cool, rainy spring, yet the lake was already very comfortable for swimming!
We were in town to play golf, jump in a lake, and play yard games outside. All of which this property is perfect for. There are several courses within a few minutes of the house, so we easily got our fill of golf. Once we were back at the house, as promised there were plenty of yard games (two sets of bag toss), kayaks, paddle boards, paddle boat, etc to play on. As well as fishing gear and ample firewood. Truly a perfect setup and we didn't have to pack all the bulky yard games in our cars.
All in all the stay was excellent, and we felt very at ease at the property. I would strongly recommend anyone stay here!
Repeat Visit to a Great Getaway
For the second year in a row some friends and I booked this home for a weekend get together, and it was just perfect. There is plenty of sleeping room and lots of spaces to hang out together inside and outside. We grilled on the very spacious deck and played games in the large back yard. We enjoyed the a bonfire at the fire pit where there was a huge quantity of cut wood ready for us. It is quiet and peaceful on the lake, and its just a three minute drive to Crosby, which is an interesting town to spend an afternoon in -- for such a small town there are good options for craft beer and food as well as bumming around. Brad made the check in and check out process very easy and hassle free. When I had a question or two, I received very prompt responses via text. I definitely recommend this place.
Spacious home on quiet lake
Stayed here with a group of friends. Loved the house and location! The first floor is great for cooking, eating, and entertaining. Lots to do the in yard. We snowshoed and fished on the lake. Grocery store was only 5 minutes away, but it still felt secluded. Will definitely book this place again! Brad, the property manager, was great.
