Lovely, very clean, bright, quiet 3BR rental house in Southwest Harbor's shore village of Manset. Please read the Guestbook comments- this is the most favorably reviewed house in Southwest Harbor. Fine views of Cadillac Mountain, Somes Sound and Southwest Harbor from sunny deck. Lots of windows for beautiful coastal light and air. House is set back 25 yards from the street and buffered by a dense line of arborvitae. Nice private and secure yard for play. Sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms; 2 rooms with a queen bed in each, one room with 2 twins- great for kids, with a rocking chair for story time. Good closets in all bedrooms. One full bathroom with updated tub and shower, plus half bath in master bedroom.
Immense walk-out basement for all your sports gear. Furnished in a comfortable mix of new and old. Included are all linens & kitchen gear, gas grill on the deck, washer & dryer, wireless internet, a Roku box, 32 inch LCD, DVD and CD, stereo. Flower boxes and planters all around.
About the parking you see in the photos from the deck. It is a resident-only lot with very limited use for the residents of the Cranberry Isles; it is not a busy or active lot. Islanders park, ride the passenger ferry out, and return to the mainland when they need their car for a trip to Ellsworth or Bangor. I am confident you will not be aware of comings or goings. We have 9 years experience with it and not a single guest has commented negatively. And now, the trees have grown in and it is well-screened. We were disappointed when it was built in 2003, but it was needed for the year-round viability of the Cranberry Isles community. The unexpected plus was that removing trees really opened up the views of the water and the hills.
My family and I have been coming to Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor since the early 70s. We appreciate the 'quiet side' of the island for its traditional Downeast villages, far fewer crowds, good restaurants, shops and services, and the Acadia National Park properties on this side of the island. I provide my guests with four pages of 'off the beaten track' ideas and suggestions to help them get an insider's view of this most beautiful part of Maine.
My number one goal is to provide you with the information you need to make the right decision on the house and location. Please email me with any questions or to check on availability. I'll reply promptly.
We have strong family ties to SW Harbor and the island. Our three great aunts worked as summer help in the 'cottages' of Bar Harbor in the 1940s and made the long trip from Boston by train, steamer and finally the coastal packet. My wife's family spent summers in SWH starting in the 70s, the same time I was in college in Maine and making my first camping trips to the island. We bought our Bass Harbor house on our honeymoon in '85 and have had the good fortune to spend a lot of our summers there ever since. Our 20-something children have now begun to bring their friends to MDI so we're well into three generations as 'summah people', as the real Mainers might call us. Come visit and be one too!
Mark Sullivan purchased this house in 2000
The great aunts I mentioned bought this house in the mid-70s. We enjoyed many fabulous visits and meals under their hospitality. We bought the house from them in 2000 and began to rent it in 2002. It's private, sunny, very clean and comfortable with very nice views.
The 'Quietside' of MDI has so much going for it! Bar Harbor is good for some things, but don't miss exploring the west side thoroughly- I'll provide you my private 'visitors' guide' with many ideas of what to see and do. The house is sparkling clean and bright, a great place to just hang out, or to use as home base for your adventures. Just about every guest comments they felt the house was very comfortable and homey. If we're booked this year for the time you want, make your plans with us for next year.
As we said we had a wonderful stay your Manset House. We were concerned about how our daughter in law and future daughter in law would think about it and everyone thought it was a great idea to make this an annual event, as we had hoped.
We are considering your Manset House, mainly because we are hoping Andy & Erin will be able to stay the entire week.
I will be in further contact regarding this. It was a plus to meet you in person and I am sure we will return to Manset House.
Comfortable ranch house. Roomy, well equipped kitchen. Deck with a marvelous view. Quiet. Convenient to shopping. Mark was very helpful with area information and directions. Hope to be back for another two weeks.
What can I say except that the house was great ,when we arrived the house was very clean dust free ,the beds slept good,we had great water pressure ,the washer and dryer was a plus in basement , the out side was lovely the deck was great for morning coffee had a great view, we really enjoyed the wild flowers in back .Mark even had a special little path made in the back to walk to the water , that was awesome the smell of those red roses was unforgettable. We seen deer feeding in the back yard two mornings and one afternoon.
. Was our 1st trip to Maine the only problem I had was we did not rent this house long enough , if you decide to come to Southwest Harbor be sure to rent this house from Mark he is just great to work with he makes you feel as if you had known him for yrs, he ans all your questions and concerns right away. he is what we call in the South one of those good ole boys. Be sure to stay a while because 4 or 5 days is not enough time to capture the beauty of this place. We Visit Acadia park. Bar Harbor ,when on a
Whale watch. Did some short hiking trips , Sand Beach , sightseeing Be sure to try the blueberry ice cream it is awesome.. The weather was great except for the day we left was raining . Oh yes, everyone in Maine was really nice and friendly.
Be sure to visit this place and make sure you rent from Mark you will not regret it. Do not worry about your deposit it almost beat me home, I would certainly rent from Mark again and would like to be able to come back someday and spent much more time here just loved it. A big change from Tennessee
We really enjoyed our stay here. We were there from Saturday to Saturday (just me and my girlfriend) and the house was ideal for us. It was close to the town of Southwest Harbor but far enough away to be private. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed breakfast and coffee on the deck overlooking the harbor every morning. We hiked up Cadillac Mountain, Acadia Mountain, St. Saveur Mountain, Valley Peak, and down to Echo Lake from Beech Mountain, among other hikes and we ate ate Thurston's, Sawyer's, Beal's, Quietside Cafe, and other favorites. The house was perfectly situated for all the hiking and lobster and blueberry pie eating we liked to do. The kitchen was well equipped and made blueberry pancakes and lobster scrambled eggs, and once we boiled lobster at home.
Working with Mark was an absolute pleasure. He made everything very easy for us and the house was clean and in excellent order when we arrived. We would definitely recommend this house and will stay there again.
We arrived on Tuesday morning and left Saturday. It was a terrific stay and the only complaint we had was our stay was too short. Although we rented Saturday to Saturday we couldn't arrive until Tuesday. There is so much to do there and we didn't have enough time to do it all. Next year if we travel to the Southwest Harbor area we plan to stay two weeks.
The house fit our needs and we loved it there. We have no complaints about the house, very clean, super view and for the most part was quiet. The photos on the Homeaway.com website are exactly what was there when we arrived.
We traveled to Cadillac Mountain and did the first sunrise in the USA. We traveled to Bar Harbor and did some beer and wine tasting. As I stated earlier there is so much to do and not enough time to do it.
The owner, Mark was very good to work with. He was very helpful in getting everything in order for our stay at his home. If I had any questions he was there to answer them either in an email or a phone call. This is our first time renting from Homeaway.com and with Mark's assistance our vacation was terrific.
Thank you Mark.
Spending time in this house on the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island made for a fantastic vacation. We really enjoyed both the comforts of the well-outfitted house and Mark's hospitality. Our whole family felt immediately at home. We were left with detailed information about activities and local landmarks, and the house's proximity to several breathtaking sites in Acadia allowed us to "pack-in" a lot in our short time: hiking, swimming, shopping, and relaxing in the beautiful surroundings. We would recommend this home to anyone looking for a rental on Mt. Desert Island and ourselves hope to return next year.
Very nice and super clean house. Nicely equipped kitchen, and nicely decorated too. View is outstanding. We had the added bonus of the SWH town fireworks being delayed from the previous weekend and were able to sit comfortably on the deck and see them! (Avoiding the crowds and having to sit on the ground or in our car.) Added bonuses for the Manset house.... Having the garage door in the basement made it so convenient to store our bikes. Our 7 year old really enjoyed the "retro" toys Mark has in the house, such as Lincoln logs and Tinkertoys. (I think my husband enjoyed them too!) If there are houses on either side of the Manset house, you do NOT see them at all. It's very private. It's shielded from the road too by a thick row of shrubs/trees. Also, the parking lot that can be seen from the back deck, is a total non-issue. We never heard one car or person from this lot. No need for an alarm clock as there is a rooster across the street! However, it was cool enough at night to close the windows, and this blocked this wake up call. You are definitely on the "quite side" of the island. There are a lot more people and traffic in Bar Harbor. Good rainy day activities with kids: The touch tank talk by a park ranger at the museum at the College of the Atlantic; the lobster hatchery and talk by a lobsterman, at the Mount Desert Oceanarium. Mark gives excellent suggestions for restaurants in SWH. We went to Sips. Interesting menu, but, in hind sight, not really for younger kids, as the service was too slow. Loved Thurstons Lobster Pound. If you go into Bar Harbor for a meal, we loved Blaze. Nice menu, with kid options, and a wide selection of micro brews. I think the best part of the Manset house is working with Mark! He's like your own private tour guide, giving you ideas for activities and where to eat. I would highly recommend the Manset house and renting from Mark!
Manset House is on quiet Rt 102A, just under two miles from 'downtown' Southwest Harbor. The house is in a quiet semi-residential area on a fully private 1.5 acre lot.
We are a two min walk to the Manset shore and its boat ramp, restaurant and marine businesses, notably the famous Hinckley Yachts complex. Also on the Shore Road are sailboat and powerboat rentals, the town dock for watching the fishermen and doing some yourself, and ferries to Somes Sound, Northeast Harbor and Little Cranberry Island. Several shore roads connect for a nice, low-traffic jogging or walking route. Less than five min. drive to Southwest Harbor stores, shops and restaurants.
This is the 'Quiet Side' of Mt. Desert Island, with world-class kayaking and sailing, biking, hiking trails, swimming in salt and freshwater. Acadia National Park attractions within a 10 minute bike ride from the house include Seawall, Wonderland, Ship Harbor, and Bass Harbor Light. Ten minute drive to Echo Lake beach.
Other Activities: My family and I have spent summers on the island for over 25 years. I have a 4 page guide with ideas and 'off the beaten path' suggestions that I will provide before your arrival.
The three most popular activities among my guests (besides relaxing with the view from the back deck at the end of the day) are hiking, biking, and kayaking. Tremendous bicycling for all levels from the house and on the Carriage Roads in the National Park. Fantastic kayaking opportunities all around, either for self-paced touring or going with a small group from one of several local outfitters. And plenty of hiking as well, for all ages and fitness levels. Here on the 'quiet side', we have a ton of high-payoff, low-effort trails- excellent for the whole family.
Golf: The Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor and the Bar Harbor Golf Club are public courses available to you.
