About Simon Sturge

I'm Simon, I manage 4 boats for a hotel in Amsterdam for the last 5 years. I used to run a guesthouse in Sitges, just outside Barcelona, for 5 years before this and although I miss the weather of Spain, this city is a great place to live. The Axo boat is 2 separate and private apartments (your side is not shared, its private) on one, so if you need something, I'm just next door. I try to check everyone in and explain the basics. However if I can't, I made a little book to help you along.

I also work for a local booking agency so can suggest places to visit and things to do you might not have thought of.

Simon Sturge purchased this house boat in 2011

Why Simon Sturge chose Grachtengordel

Staying on a houseboat, I think, is a very unique an exciting way to experience Amsterdam. Watching the boats go by is so fascinating. The Dutch love their boats and in summer the canals get quite busy. Occasionally the swans will pop by to see if you have some bread but mind your fingers as they are not shy. The boat is right in the centre of the city so you are very well place to see and walk to everything it has to offer. The trade off is it is a little more noisy than say a quieter canal but most guests don't seem bothered too much. I love the energy it brings but it's not for everyone. I hope you will love it to. Do feel free to ask me any questions before you book. I will give an honest answer.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We have stayed in 7 or 8 houseboats in amsterdam over the years but never have we had a better houseboat, in a better location for the money. This was a short stay so we didn't really get into the "moving in" and "setting up house" thing we normally do so I can't comment on using the kitchen other than to say it was new and clean and appears to be well stocked. The bed was very comfortable, there were plenty of towels which is unusual so thanks much for that guys. The bathroom was sufficient, new and clean, but remember it's a houseboat so not huge but for a houseboat it's a big bathroom with plenty of room and a nice big sink and good shower. There is no music unless you bring an iPod for the iPod docking station. The sofas are extremely comfortable and the dining table is big enough to seat several people. The TV is fine if you go on vacation to watch TV, but the stations are limited and again no music stations. The views???..Wow, big windows with great views on the river side of the houseboat but blinds you can close if you feel you want some extra privacy but hey, you are across from the opera house and the only people that can see in are those going by in a boat. Highly recommended. We will stay there again.

The best way to see Amsterdam is to rent a bike to discover the old part of town with it's chic cafes and restaurants and to get to Anne Frank, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Rijks museums to name just a few. Canal boat tours are always nice or hire a boat and go your own way. The Dutch love their bikes and boats. If the weather is nice head for Vondel park or the beach is just 20 mins away. In spring the tulip gardens of Keukenhoff is a must.

And with plenty of night life on your doorstep you are never far from a good night out. There is so much to see and do you might not have time for it all but then you can always come back and see us again.

Regarding smoking (which is not allowed inside). If when you check out there is the obvious smell of smoking we have a 50-150 euros penalty depending on how bad. If you are respectful then this will not be a problem and no charges will be made. Of course good behaviour will see a full return of the deposit.

Very comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed the opportunity to stay on a boat in the canal. It is conveniently located for easy access to the city. We appreciated the large windows in the living room which provided great views of the canal - so picturesque!

An unique accommodation!

  • 3 of 5

The houseboat was clean and well laid out. The bathroom was a bit stuffy, so we always tried to keep the door open. The couches were comfortable, although there were no sheets, just a duvet and one pillow. The folks at the hotel were very helpful! I never met Simon, but he was helpful throughout the booking process. During our stay I tried to contact him a few times and never heard back which was a bit frustrating. I even called him from Canada because I had not heard confirmation back from him as to if everything was still a go for our trip. I would recommend bringing ear plugs because there is a night club right outside the houseboat. Overall we had a good stay.

Owner's Response: Hello Amanda, Thanks for your review. Sorry for the late replies, I hadn't set Home Away as a safe address so things were going to my junk. I also get a lot of phone texts and trying to get better at replying to everything. As I manage 4 boats you can imagine things get a little crazy at times. Any how, as I was just next door you could have given me a knock if it is urgent. Sorry I forgot to check all the bedding was there I hope our hotel sorted you out promptly. Just wanted to clear something up, there is the Ice Bar over the road, not a nightclub, although we are right in the centre of things so indeed it can get a little noisy at weekends. The trade off for being in the centre. I hope it didn't spoil your stay too much. If you do ever come back I promise to be more present. And for other potential guests please don't be too put off by this only review, most can be found on other platforms where I have been listed longer.
