Located just 23 miles west of West Yellowstone in Island Park, Idaho, Mountain Lake Cabin sits on a half acre property, nestled between pine trees and aspens, and bordered by Targhee National Forest. From the cabin you can see a glimpse of Henry's Lake, surrounded by towering mountains forming the Continental Divide. Mountain Lake Cabin, built in 2003, is the perfect home base for exploration of the Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. Fish Henry's Lake, a world renowned fishing destination, from the public access only a half mile from the house. WiFi is available for the use of our guests. The cabin is supplied well - we provide linens and towels, a hair dryer, all paper goods, hand soaps, dishwashing soaps, laundry soap, shower gel, trash can liners, etc. The comfort of our guests is important to us!
This 1617 sq. ft. two-story 3 bedroom/2 bath year-round vacation home has a large loft and sleeps 10 comfortably. It is fully equipped and tastefully furnished. The Great Room has floor to ceiling windows, and the log staircase and vertical logs supporting the cathedral ceiling add to the rustic charm of this lovely mountain home. The alluring view draws your eyes outward through quaking aspens and pines, and to the rising mountains that form the Continental Divide to the North.
It was here in 1805 that the Lewis and Clark expedition looked for a passage over the Divide to link the Missouri River to the Columbia River and down to the Pacific Ocean.
Knotty pine tongue and groove walls and ceilings, custom pine plank flooring, slate tiles, and plush wall-to-wall carpet create a cozy and rustic atmosphere in the cabin. Comfortable furnishings welcome you to a very relaxing experience! A fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar and stools opens onto the Great Room with two comfortable leather couches, a recliner, a rocking chair and a corner cast iron gas stove backed by a tall wall of smooth river rock.
The master bedroom with its log bed and full bath is right down the hall. The master bathroom has a bath/shower combination. In the rear of the cabin is a large mudroom, that has a washer and a dryer and a door to the rear deck. The rear deck is very private and looks out over the adjoining Targhee National Forest that rises to the heights of Sawtelle Mountain. To the side of the cabin in the rear is a fire pit, where you can gather to roast marshmallows, share the day's activities and reminisce...
Up the log stairs is a large loft, with a queen size pullout couch and an over-stuffed chair with ottoman. It is a cozy place to talk, read, or watch movies on DVD or satellite TV. There are two upstairs bedrooms; one with a queen bed, and the other with a full size bunk bed and a twin trundle. The upstairs bathroom has a shower. Up a log ladder tucked under apex of the cathedral ceiling is an eagle’s nest loft. Your children will love to play there!
Out front the extensive redwood deck with its log railing looks offers views of aspens and pine trees, which creates a great sense of seclusion. Look forward to casual meals and BBQs here, as you enjoy the view and the sound of the quaking aspens.
Depending on the season, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, white water rafting, water skiing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, golfing, sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are all available in Island Park and neighboring West Yellowstone. You can literally snowmobile from the cabin onto trails that connect with groomed trails down the road in Henry’s Lake State Park, or into West Yellowstone and further into Idaho. You could also try the groomed trails at Big Springs (drive south on Highway 20 and take a left at Mack's Inn). There are also great opportunities for cross-country skiing - drive south on Highway 20 to Harriman State Park and enjoy the peace and quiet there. Or go to the world-famous RendezVous Ski trails in West Yellowstone and visit during the yearly Ski Festival around Thanksgiving, or take part in the yearly RendezVous Ski Races in March.
Back country skiing can be had right from the house. Ski up the foothills of Sawtelle Peak from the back door!
The fishing in Henry’s Lake and surrounding streams is a trout angler's dream and this area is a world-renowned fishery. The lake is home to the 'Henry's Lake 'Lunker,' a cutthroat-rainbow hybrid that can easily weigh up to 10 pounds. The lake also offers an abundance of brook, rainbow, and native cutthroat trout. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River flows out of the lake and winds its way through Harriman State Park to Ashton. This stretch of clear mountain water is acclaimed by fly-fishing enthusiasts as the 'best trout fishing stream in the U.S.'
Henry's Lake State Park on the southeast corner of the lake encompasses three unique ecosystems including the lake, wetlands and sagebrush steppe. Moose and antelope are a common sight and wildflowers bloom throughout the season. The 3-mile Aspen Loop Nature Trail is open to hikers and bikers.
High Mountain Adventures across from the Island Park Resort off of Highway 20 rents kayaks, canoes, rafts, tubes, 4-wheelers and mountain bikes. Or rent your snowmobile there during the winter. Spend a day on Henry's Lake in kayak or canoe as you enjoy the peace and quiet amidst the mountains of the Continental Divide.

First, we would like to graciously thank Magdalena, rental manager, for all of her excellent and timely communication with us as we prepared to travel here from Oregon! She was so patient and always ready to help with whatever questions we had which made our trip and our arrival here so wonderful! Thank you Magdalena! To the owners, Karl and Betsy: May I tell you that your beautiful cabin is so wonderfully well-equipped, stocked, and clean that I really did not even have to make a run to the grocery store for items like paper products, or plastic storage bags! Even a crock pot and every utensil/cooking item needed for those meals we cooked here - spices, even the condiments!
Another excellent thing we enjoyed was how comfortable the beds and all the furnishings were. All of my family suffers terribly from dust mite allergies and so we are usually not very comfortable in rental homes because they do not clean well for dust in furnishings, bedding, etc. We had no such problems here, so we know you must do a great job of "allergy-proofing" your bedding and keeping dust to a minimum - we are so appreciative as this is very rare! I hope it can continue to be maintained this way because we hope to return annually!
We spent a good majority of our time in Yellowstone so we did not see much wildlife around the cabin, but enjoyed the beautiful location! Your deck is awesome! Great work! I can tell you stay here yourself because your own special touches make all the difference! We have stayed in many vacation homes in Oregon on the coast and I can tell you from experience that yours has been the most comfortable and wonderful to stay in because of the care you have taken to provide more than 'just the basics' and your continued interest in 'keeping it fresh' and clean. Thank you for providing this wonderful home!
Sincerely, The Laffertys and Dugans
The Cabin has all the amenities of home to include great scenery. It is fully stocked and they even took the time to set up a small Christmas tree for us, what more could a person need. It had plenty room for the five us to spread out and with 2 bathrooms nobody waited inline. The cabin was nestled in the trees and even though there are cabins close by, you feel as though your all alone. The only draw back (small one) is the private driveway (during winter) is very narrow and does not offer a lot of room to maneuver vehicles. We had two pickups and a 2 place snowmobile trailer and it was difficult to situate everything. Once it snowed (first night), we got stuck in the driveway trying to get the snowmobile trailer out and decided to take it down and park it in a parking lot we found about 1.5 miles down the road for the rest of our stay. Beyond that the cabin is the perfect place to stay and we hope to return again soon. If your looking for a great place to stay in Island Park then this cabin will fit all your needs no matter what your adventure is.
We had a wonderful trip. Started off the trip seeing a moose as we pulled up the drive. Beautiful fall weather! We loved your cabin, we will most definitely be back.
We had a wonderful time, the cabin is beautiful and the location is wonderful. The property manager was great to work with and very prompt is answering our questions. Henry's lake was about a 5 minute drive and a great place to fish. We will return.
We had a great time in your beautiful cabin. It is warm and comfy, and well stocked. We came to ride in the area and we kept our horses at Meadow View Ranch, so it was so convenient to feed and load the horses … just a walk down the hill. There was a little family of deer that moved through the yard every morning and evening. Even though there are cabins nearby it seemed quiet and secluded. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home!
Spent three nights here, loved every minute of out time from the time we got in until we left. Of course close to Yellowstone which we utilized as a home base. The house is very well laid out, has a good variety of cooking supplies (pots/pans etc) and each bed was very nice. The house is well constructed, we had 4 kids under the age of 4 including one infant, and even with noisy board games in the evening the bedrooms with sleeping kids were quiet thanks to the solid wood doors. The cabin actually had a highchair and baby gate to keep the little ones off the stairs.
As said over and over, a great property and a great price for what you get. Only complaint we would have is the very early check out time of 10AM and the checkout asks to do 2 loads of laundry. We basically felt our last morning there was working for the rental and we had to get everyone up early and showered and then sit around and wait for the first load of laundry. Other than this though, no complaints and we won't hesitate to rent this place again!
Yellowstone Park, with all of its wildlife and geothermal activities, is close to the cabin. Teton National Park is also well within reach for a day trip.
