sublime quiet, sun and privacy in a 2 bedroom,1 bath home, backing to greenbelt
About jeff whalen
I am a 4th generation Monterrey bay and SF bay area native who spent many happy summers at this home. Growing up here, and in silicon valley, this cottage is still my respite from the daily grind and working in silicon valley....and we're happy to share it with you !
jeff whalen purchased this House in 1960
Why jeff whalen chose Aptos
Totally vintage but updated "old-school surf shack" that my father hand built in 1960 for my mom, with love and attention to detail. Located and perfectly sited to the south and west for maximum sun exposure, close to the ocean, yet in a very, very quiet and private neighborhood on a dead end street, just a two minute walk to the beach for a morning run, your beach day, or the sunset. The street is a cul de sac so there are very few neighbors driving by. In my opinion, my dad picked the best lot on the block back in 1959! (quiet neighbors on both sides and across the street) We love the more rural (and much less congested) area of Rio Del Mar/Aptos because of the spectacular meeting of the sea and the redwoods, yet only 10 minutes (7 miles) from Santa Cruz
What makes this House unique
on a 5000 sq foot lot with large fenced backyard the home enjoys total privacy, quiet, is sheltered from the wind, and with the 100' mountain & flora behind it, you'll be reminded of Kauai.....total Zen. The sundeck looks up the hillside or out towards the sea and sunsets to the west. Although you can no longer see the ocean (newer construction blocks the view), one can clearly hear the waves crashing on the beach. Sip a drink and catch sound of the ocean and its breeze from the sunny front patio or sundeck in the afternoon.

Great location and house
Small, but comfortable space, that feels larger with great outdoor space that’s very usable in Coastal CA climate. Aptos is a great little town in its own right, with nice beach two blocks away, and several good restaurants, especially the great, casual and friendly Pixie Deli. Location is perfect for easy travel to Santa Cruz and area to north, and Monterrey and Big Sur. Communication with Jeff was easy and straight forward. House was clean and well kept.
Beautiful beach retreat
The Beach Cabin was a perfect fit for our family of five, and Jeff and Peggy were great hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay, from amazing walks along the Rio del Mar beach to watching the sunset from the deck. We hope to be back soon!
Thanks guys, great to have you as guests & happy you enjoyed the area.
Looking forward to having you back!
Quiet, clean beach retreat
Nice place to relax. Quiet & clean residence. Good proximity to beach, freeway, and Aptos Village. Enjoyed stay. Recommend nearby Bittersweet Bistro restaurant.
thanks Neil and please come back next year !! (good recommendation for dining too!)
We loved our visit to the Lake Court house in Aptos. The property was clean and impeccably maintained and had everything we needed for our stay (salad spinner, check; boogie boards, check). We all loved the outdoor shower, which was not only fun and relaxing, but incredibly useful when coming home from a sunny sandy day at the beach. The beach was about two blocks away, a very easy walk, and it was great to come back to the house midday for lunch. The wooded hillside behind the house was wonderful and private; we heard owls and coyotes at night. I would highly recommend a stay here. Jeff was a fantastic and efficient communicator. We had no issues getting to the house or with our stay there. Thanks, Jeff! We hope to be back.
sounds like you enjoyed the house and the area Emily.
looking forward to having you back!
Communication with Jeff was excellent! Beach house was inviting, clean , and had all the necessities needed when your away from home. We enjoyed our stay, thanks for sharing your beach house with us!!
great to host you Denyse!
come back next summer!
We are located in the prime beach community of Rio Del Mar, and close to dining and shopping in Aptos, Capitola, the Harbor, and downtown Santa Cruz.
THE BEST farmers market in Santa Cruz County is held every Saturday morning at Cabrillo College 1 mile away beginning at 7 AM. Great fresh local fish, fruits, and vegetables.
Visit Cafe Rio in Rio Del Mar for dinner. For breakfast or lunch try Pixie Deli, Flats Coffee, Cafe Sparrow, New Leaf and Cat and Cloud in Aptos, or the Farm one mile north on Soquel ave. For dinner try Pino Alto (at Cabrillo College), Persephone, or (the best Mexican food in the area) Manuel's in Seacliff .... are all about a 1/2 mile away....or Paplapas Mexican in the Seascape resort 1 mile south. Stop in Capitola to eat at Bella Roma, or one of many others, or continue on the the yacht harbor and eat at Johnny's Harborside for local fresh fish.
In town (Santa Cruz) our favorite (and best) wine bar and fine dining at Soif , or for more casual fare try the Mid Town area and Westside for eateries like Lilianns, Bantam, the Buttery, West End Tap, or Hulas Hawaiian (in downtown Santa Cruz) and then go to see an independent film at the Nick or Del Mar theaters there. Also, lots of fun to hang out, eat, and listen to music on the new patio, Abbott Square, at the museum of art and history (MAH) also downtown. First Friday nights are particularly fun!
World famous jazz artists entertain weekly at Kuumbwa Jazz Club (we sat behind clint eastwood one night), or see live theater at Colgan Theater at The Tannery (both downtown Santa Cruz). During the summer live stage productions are seen at Cabrillo College.
Don't miss the many miles of mountain biking and hiking in the redwood forests of Nisene Marks State Park 1/2 mile away in Aptos....(bike rentals are at the entrance to the park in Aptos)... and don't miss the stunning views from Wilder Ranch State Park off highway one (12 miles north) while hiking or biking along the cliffs above the ocean or the from mesas above. (bike rentals are available on mission street 1 mile from the park).
No vacation would be complete without going to the boardwalk during the summer....but beware of the beach traffic... go early, stay late!...better yet park in downtown Santa Cruz and take the free shuttle during the summer months.
Try surfing by googling "Ed's surf camp and lessons" and sign up for a private or group lesson at Rio Del Mar, Jacks, or Cowells beach. If you're experienced take your longboard to Cowells, Jacks (38th ave), Private's, or Capitola. Its mostly short boards only at The Point. (if its breaking in Rio Del Mar go to the south parking lot for a nice shore break in the AM)
We're not golfers but if you are, Seascape golf course clubhouse is less than 1 mile away. A more challenging course is De La Vega, also a public course.
The Packard aquarium in Pacific Grove, downtown and the harbor in Monterrey, and downtown Carmel are all a 35 to 40 minute drive south on highway one. Further south, our favorite weekend drive is to Big Sur, about 60 miles, or an hour south of Rio Del Mar.
